I think its' finally for real this time. His resurgence during his final season in Green Bay made him think he had more years than he really had. His comeback in New York was then doused with a shot of reality.

Fair winds and following seas, Brett. I wonder how long it'll be before the Jets start angling to pry Cassel away from the Patriots?

He's done. Nobody would take him back even if he wanted to come back. Its clear he can't hold up past 11 weeks anymore.

He came back for that one shot because he wondered if he could do it again.. he found out he couldn't. I think he's realized that and is ready to leave for good and wait for his HOF induction.

I think it's a shame how Brett went about this whole retirement bit, because for the past couple years it has been a media circus, and has transformed from something noteworthy, to me feeling like "who cares, as long as this isn't the top story every damned day."

As far as this is concerned, don't worry, I've already seen supposed trade rumors about this. I certainly don't think that's going to happen unless the Pats get a pretty penny or two... or three... or a whole lot more.

I have friends who work in news in Green Bay. The saying is, if Brett Favre farts, it's the lead story. They're sick of the retirement crap (and everything else to do with the packers ) For years now he's waffled and whined at the end of the season. It's interesting how he went from being a virtual god in that town to being a near-pariah in some circles (there are and always will still be the Favre Fanboys) because he kept jacking the team and the fans around.

Only if (a) Brady is healthy again and (b) the Jets are ready for big big bucks. See: Cassel accepts franchise tag from Patriots - The Boston Globe.

Also, (c) hell freezes over. With the bad blood between the Jets and Pats, I don't think this move would be possible.

I have a friend who works in sports broadcasting. He's a big Favre fan because he thinks Favre gives a more interesting interview than the guys who step up and give 110% and play it one day at a time. He's less guarded.

Favre became a pariah for the same reason that striking workers get dumped on: he went against his bosses who shoved him out trying to get their boy in. When Favre fought back, they hired Ari Fucking Fleischer to make him look bad. That and they like their Führerprinzip around the Fox River Valley.

I won't believe he's serious until we get past training camp.

Yeah, the chance that he'll cry on camera always makes it more interesting ;)


Bah. Farve wasn't shoved out. He /retired./ Tell ya what. Go up to your boss tomorrow, tell him you're quitting, and then come back in 4 months and tell him to give you your old job back after he already hired your replacement. See how well that works for ya ;)

Agreed. You can only go back and forth so many times before one party gets sick of what's going on.

Great career. Last year didnt do much for his legacy, but it also didnt tarnish it. You cant take away from the guy what he has achieved.

I think he would have been better off retiring as a Packer.

The back and forth with his team, the allegations of him negotiating with other teams while still negotiating with the packers, I feel tarnished to a degree his reputation. He could have gone out as one of the few players who was true to a team, and that he can not regain now.

Living in Wisconsin, i've heard that line umpteen times. I think its repetition illustrates my point about people getting upset about Favre defying workplace & class authority. I don't know why that bugs people so much. Jealously, i suppose, but a little organising, and they wouldn't have to prostrate themselves before the Boss, either.

Anyway, Thompson gave Favre an artificial deadline and told him he was sending his locker to him in Mississippi /before/ the retirement. Favre did what he could to keep playing ball. The Packers could have simply released him -- after all, he wasn't good enough for McCarthy or Thompson -- but since they refused, he had to force a move on their part.

It's my understanding that if he comes out of retirement, he's still under contract to play on the Jets, which I think is good in the sense that he can't just retire and come back as a means to change teams.

I like Favre and think he should have retired on the Packers. He was a legacy there, and playing on the Jets seems like a silly decision, especially now that it's turning out to be such a short stay.

I don't think either party in Green Bay handled the situation as well as they could, but at least it won't be on the news as much this time around.

Did I misinterpret you, or are you saying that people are mad at Favre because they aren't in a union?


The "artificial deadline" was "you've pulled this whining wishy washy crap for years. We have a season to plan for. Make your damned decision."

Favre had more power than a lot of folks would in a similar situation. Why did it piss them off so much that he used it?

I've had enough of this guy already. He's gone and I'm glad.
