Rafa is one of the best out there, he's a winner and he's taken Liverpool to the next level. I think he had made them one of the best cup teams in the world, and isnt far of a premiership winning team. If you gave Liverpool Stevie G fit all season and Evra and Vidic the title race would have gone the other way.

He gets up people's noses - like Fergie, Mr Capello and a certain "Special One", but you have to have that sort of persona to get the best out of world class players.

I'd love to see him as England manager after Capello wins the next world cup and retires.

oh please he's not one of the best. He's a crackpot.

You say give liverpool a healthy all season stevie g and vida and evra (who are two of United's players) and they would win is crap. Look at the ton of injuries that United had this season..they still managed to win the league because they got good production out of their secondary players and they beat up the lower teams. Gerrard and Torres were healthy for plenty of those draws that liverpool suffered against lower clubs.

So yeah, people can play "if this and if that" but in the end, Rafa is a crock. I'd much rather have the special one than Rafa.

Now now ladies!

One thing I have noticed this season is that Rafa hasn't tinkered as much as in previous seasons.
More continuity and trying to field the strongest team MOST of the time seems to have made the difference. Let's hope he's learnt something there.

Lets face it - Sir Whisky Nose does his fair share of winding up other managers. Hell he only talks to the cameras when his team wins! What's that all about?
But the Premier League wouldn't be the best league in the world without characters like them, so I say long may it continue!

fatboss,

you have to admit at least "old whiskey nose" would give credit where it's due if he hadn't won the league this season. Rafa refuses to acknowledge the man and simply sidesteps the issue with all his excuses of money, stadium size, unfair treatment from refs and injuries; all of which are completely unfounded and most notably *wrong*.

If United didn't have the injuries they had including 2 first squad members out for practically the entire season, the race would have been over long ago. So what? They managed to find a way to still win it. Rafa has spent tons of money in the past 4 years and failed to add any real depth whereas United did, and Rafa is planning on spending more in the spanish market. Him saying that Anfield is a reason that they can't compete is a slap in the face to anyone who supports Liverpool. The place is deafening, and OT is just a bunch of corporates who don't even know the correct names of players. Save the Stretty, it's a tomb. And, my favorite of all excuses is his claim of treatment from the officials.. it's laughable. 'Pool have been the recipient of the fewest reds and the most given to opposition this season.. I fail to see how United won any special treatment.

It's one thing to not like Fergie, but when the man's accomplished what he has, I think he's owed a little respect and also expected to do things his own way. Rafa hasn't earned respect like that and honestly, he should learn that his mouth gets him in far too much trouble.

All 4 teams at the bottom lost... sums it up really.
It really makes you realise how bad Newcastle and Boro are that a team as Hull have been since Christmas stayed up. I had a feeling the point they got the other day was gonna be absolutely massive.

As for Newcastle... dont buy into this "best fans in the country" rubbish... there attendances last time they were outside the top flight werent that great for many years... as much as I dislike Big Sam, he would have kept them up... Keegan, Kinnear, Shearer - laughable.

The fans still want Shearer - a guy with no experience and who's only qualification is that he was a great player. Hope for the sake of the club Ashley has the sense to ignore them this time. Nothing against Shearer as a man, but this isnt the time to be taking another huge gamble on an untried boss.

with the teams that are out and the teams that are coming in.. the League certainly has an old school look about it now doesn't it?

I agree that Shearer perhaps isn't the right man, but it's hard to really sit here and say he is or isn't considering the talent he's surrounded with. I don't know if anyone could have kept them up with everything that club endured this season.

I was just happy that the United youngsters took the 3 points against Hull. It showed the future, but it also showed that Hull has a long long way to go and the media had no reason to question Fergie putting on such a "weakened" side.

bring on the Final.. it should be a great one!

With players like Owen, Martens, Viduka... a lack of quality shouldnt have been Newcastle's problem, it really seemed to me that very few of them failed. And Shearer has to take some of the flak for that. Under him they won 1 out of 8 I think? Even an ordinary run of form would have taken them above an awful Hull team.

I felt the same frustration with Norwich City on the final day getting thrashed by Charlton... I dont want to see people running till the point of physical collapse and no sane fan does... but in the last game when they needed a win to have a chance, and over the last few games, they just meekly surrendered - no passion, no desperation, no fire... just utter cowardice. I wanted to see at least that losing hurt the players at least a little as much as it hurt me and the other fans.

Norwich went a similar way to Newcastle as well - appointing a beloved ex player for a short term gamble to avoid the drop. Gunny is a decent man (not sure that Shearer is, but Shearer is an honourable man at least, who would not have tamely wandered through the Villa game as some of his star did) - but at the end of the day they both lacked the skill, experience and knowledge to get the best out of the players when it really counted.

United were only in the game for 10 mins. They looked as hapless in the game as Arsenal looked against them in the Semis. Men against Boys. None of the "fab 4" looked as if they had anything to offer.

what a sad display..

so uninspired, lethargic and utterly useless.

Barca was weak in the back, yet it was United who looked weak and conceeded a silly first goal and an amazing header by Messi.

Glory Glory Man Utd.

Thought it wasnt that bad, just a bit of extra class from Barca. Lovely finish from Sammy Eto'o for the first. But the Barca midfield won it, I think Utd probably shouldnt have gone into the game with Giggs and Park in the starting line up.

What he said.

A really disappointing way to end the CL, if you ask me. Never really felt like a final. I was hoping that after Barca had their way with them in the 1st half, United would come out in the 2nd and play their game. But Barca continued to set the pace and keep possession. The passing by United was shocking...at one stage they couldn't string more than 3 passes together without turning it over.

Next month - Confederations Cup!

what'd you lot win again? Oh that's right FUCK ALL!

and now some of you are coming up with excuses to say you've won 20 titles instead of 18.. sad days for the KOP

United still had an amazing season even without the CL title. You could see last night where the problems are and it's like I've said all season, it's in the midfield. We've severely missed Hargreaves this season and Fletcher missing out was certainly a huge blow. I felt Giggsy as much as I love the man should have been subbed before the first half was finished....

the most shocking player other than Carrick however was Wazza. He was nowhere to be seen.

I don't get the 20 titles business it's always been 18 to me, maybe 19 next season eh?
You don't need to tell me we won fuck all this season Gucc, I'll be the first to admit it.

Man Ure sure looked shell-shocked last night, like they didn't know what had hit them. But they have played in games like that before and ended up on top, why was last night any different?
Rooney looked suitably embarassed, Berbatov looked like he didn't know what day it was (no change there then!) and the others didn't look like a team that had just lost the CL Final.
Fergie will never retire now until he gets his hands on that cup!

It's going to be a long summer, but I'd like to say I've enjoyed this thread and its many contributors. Let's make sure there another one just like it next season.

fatboss, I don't get the 20 title business either, in fact, I went browsing around the Liverpool forums and some people are trying to get the youth cups added to the list.. wtf? It's just hard for some scousers to handle being tied with the Mancs in league titles.

That's the first CL final that United lost. As far as Berba goes, he's so fluid and has such great ball control, but the problem is nobody feeds him. He feeds everyone else but doesn't get the favor returned, hopefully that will change next season.

The first goal was a sucker punch and nothing really spectacular by Barca or any real build up by them. I think United really thought they would walk in, score 2 early and sit back..when that didn't happen they were just shocked and couldn't get their heads back in it. The midfield was absolutely shocking. Iniesta was the best player on the pitch and nobody even marked him.

So United is stuck on 3 CL cups.. I'm betting he wants to at least match 'Pool's number before he rides off into the sunset.

Anxiously awaiting transfer windows and of course the Tevez saga finish. There's still more to write about in here, but it will obviously be a bit sparse at times..

and no worries fatboss, we'll create another one next season!

Pretty Boy Torres signed a new deal with the 'Pool today.. gives an option for the club to extend it to 2013/2014.

and the man who orchestrated the City buyout is now buying Pompey.

you would think these rich Arab investors would actually buy good clubs

So Mr. Tantrum finally gets his way. Real will spend 131 million US transfer fee..and then have to pay him wages.

that gives SAF tons of money to spend in the market. Benzema anyone?
