Shit, Mangini got sacked
Didnt really predict that even though the season dropped off at the end.
I think this season the team made progress and were going in the right direction. I hope they have a good replacement lined up and it isnt just a knee jerk reaction. |
This has been rumored for a while now. It's not surprising at all. He just wasn't there mentally. He was too aggressive when he shouldn't have been and not enough when he should have gone for it.
Really, I think it's a move to try and convince Favre to come back next year. Him and Mangini didn't get along from what I've heard. Not sure why they would want him back considering that he just doesn't have it anymore. He should have stayed retired.. but then if he hadn't come back, Pennington would never have landed in Miami's lap. The team wasn't going in the right direction. They were horrible the final 6 games or so. There was no way they should have lost the division or not made the playoffs. The team has no pass rush and isn't too hot on defense all the way around. They need a better O-line and a quarterback. They need a coach who will make better decisions. Take a look at Mangini's record. He's under .500. He's been there long enough. They have a few people in mind already to look at, including Bill Cower (not going to happen) so really, not making the playoffs was just the final nail in his coffin. Whatever, as a 'phins fan.. I'm not complaining at all. Pennington got his revenge and I get to finally cheer my Dolphins in the playoffs again. |
I wish Chad never left, Brett Favre is a legend, but I think at this stage in his career it wasnt a good move for the Jets. He pulled off some great cameo's that showed the player he can be, but also failed to protect possession and threw passes that werent really there way too often in the games I saw.
|
Here's the deal. The Dolphins would never have made it where they are without Chad, and the Jets would never have made it where they are without Brett.
Favre has never excelled in taking care of the ball. He's always been interception prone so really, his run of interceptions to end the season isn't that surprising. The Jets have a lot more wrong with them other than a quarterback. They've always had this notion that the quarterback is the problem but it's not. They need a defense. Granted, their defense isn't as bad as Denver's, but it's still bad. |
They should fire the GM as well. He's the guy that signed and traded for all of the big names last off-season.
The head coach, unless they are a major factor in the offensive or defensive play-calling or cause a locker-room revolt, is usually the least-responsible person in this kind of situation. They get too much credit when things go right, and too much blame when things go wrong. |

I agree completely. There is talk of the GM being sacked as well. So your wish may come true ;) However, Mangini is to blame for a lot of stupid play calls towards the end of the season.. key example.. the Seattle game. They could have punted and got the ball back and instead went for a 4th down conversion and got burned. Mangini has a history of not being aggressive when he needs to be and then going overboard when he doesn't need it. That is a factor in all of this I think. It's the NFL.. nothing about the coaching carousel should surprise anyone anymore. |
I don't think you can bitch at the GM for the Jets talent. Favre played like absolute GARBAGE this last game, and the rest of the team is stout. They had enough talent to be a 12 win team, but enough brain farts to miss the playoffs. That's the stinker about being a borderline AFC team.

I honestly don't know the answer, so it's a non-rhetorical question. |

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...done-deal.html Hindsight time. What got Mangini fired was that he appeared to have stopped doing offensively what made them 8-3 leading up to the Titans game. They controlled the ball for extended periods, they relied on their running, they stuck to the short passes, and most importantly, they put an end to Favre's gun-slinging ways which always seemed to end in an interception (side note: I never noticed until this season Favre's tendency to put the ball through your chest on short passes while floating it when he went deep. Frustration was an understatement). Ironically enough, this offensive style was what Pennington excelled at. In the final five weeks, when things weren't working out, he reverted to his gun-slinging ways which only made things worse. It's a mystery why he didn't continue to rely on his ground game and short passes which got them to where they were, but it's not all about Brett Favre. Their defense let them down as well, and considering Mangini's background as a defensive coordinator that's more unforgiveable than the disagreements he may have had with Favre. The Jets spent a lot of money revamping that team to go deep in the playoffs. Their failure to get there rests on the men with the headsets. And for anybody who believed his firing was out of the blue: http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/5...k122308wa8.jpg This was the backpage of Friday's NY Post before the Dolphins game. |

What Im worried about is sacking the coach when you dont have an upgrade already in place.
If they have the right guy lined up - it might not be bad If this is a knee jerk reaction to a bad run at the end of the season - I dont agree with it. I cant say I am as knowledgable as some people - I basically watch the Jets games online and try to check espn.com for news , Ive been to one game live in my whole life - but to me the Jets season was defined by the decision to sign Favre, for better or worse; trying to slot an ageing gunslinger into a "protect the ball" type of offense. I wont disrespect Brett as a person or a player because he is one of the best, but in the context and at this stage in his career - he wasnt the player for the Jets. They and he dont have long enough to build an offense around him, and he wanted to play different to the way they are set up to play. People are too quick in my opinion to blame the coach, when a whole organisation doesnt quite make it. As for the too aggressive/too conservative calls... its a matter of context. If you make the 4th and 2 its a genius call, if you dont its a dummy one. I think why the Jets fell away is they just got into the wrong offense... its great playing champagne football and tossing 40 yard completions, but most times "stuff the ball up your jumper" style football wins games: and at the end of the day I would say that was because of signing a QB that can only really play that way nder pressure, rather than the failings of a coach. |
Again, I don't think this was just because of this season. The Jets have long been under achievers.
In the NFL, it's just a fact of life. If you don't win, you get fired, regardless of whose fault it is. There are plenty of teams that will have a look at Mangini, so I wouldn't cry too much for him. |
Mangini is headed to the Browns in a four year deal.
could be great for him.. could be bad.. who knows when you're dealing with that club. |
Rumor is they are also looking at George Kokinis, the scouting director of the Ravens, for the GM spot.
Hmm...former Patriots defensive coordinator...former Ravens scouting director...where have I heard this before? |

It'd be great to see the both of them turn Cleveland into a winner, but GM wise for the Browns, given the past and what appears to be a curse on the team I don't see anyone wanting to jump at that chance unless they too have deep roots in this town. |
