Tim Montgomerey jailed on Heroin charges

i think tim deserves what he gets.

glad that sport stars dont get away with shit like this too. my question is.. whos looking after the kid they had together???

looks like tims' gonna be in the slammer for a while. shame that someone with so much talent would resort to performance enhancing steroids, then cheque fraud and now heroin. things just keep getting worse.

Olympic star jailed on heroin chargesFrom correspondents in Washington

FORMER US track star Tim Montgomery, an Olympic gold medalist now banned from the sport, has been sentenced to five years in prison on heroin charges.

Montgomery, once known as the fastest man alive, was sentenced in Federal court in Norfolk, Virginia for conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin, according to a court document. He had pleaded guilty to the charges in July.

Montgomery won an Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney as a member of the US 4x100m relay team.

Two years later, he set a 100m world record of 9.78 seconds but that was erased from the record books after the US anti-doping agency found he had received steroids. He was barred from competition in 2005.

Last May, Montgomery was sentenced to 46 months in prison for a cheque fraud and money laundering scheme in which he tried to deposit three cheques worth $775,000.

That case also ensnared his former girlfriend, the sprinter Marion Jones, who was sentenced to six months for misleading investigators about the check fraud scheme and lying about her steroid use.

Jones has been stripped of her five 2000 Olympic medals and banned from the sport.

I think her mom is, if I remember right.

It wasn't reported in the story you linked, dlish, but apparently during his apology to the court, he basically said "I've never had a real job. And I didn't want to get one."

Dumbass.

In the year when Usain Bolt re-ignited the public interest in track so spectacularly and magnificently, all I think is that its a shame that a loser like Montgomery is getting any press at all.

nothing spectacular and magnificent about using performance enhancing drugs. all cheats should be jailed. including usain.

that'd stop them from taking drugs.

Strange Famous 12-01-2008 01:31 PM

As far as Im aware Bolt has never failed a drug test?

dlish 12-01-2008 04:39 PM

thats what they said about carl...

the 100m record holders all have a cloud over their name. every single one of them.

ive done the numbers, i racked my brain over it for many days asking myself if it is humanly possible to do it drug free, ive put together spreadsheets analysing his times and the history of the 100m records progression, and i came up with only one answer.

he's on drugs

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean he's clean. It COULD mean he's on something they aren't testing for.

I hope he's clean. I expect he's not.

Oh right, so much for innocent until proven guilty then.

If you can watch what Usain did, and the real conclusion you draw is "he must be on drugs even though there's no evidence, because he's too good" - then track is dead as a sport already.

SF, i'd rather think of it in another way...i'd rather take everything with a grain of salt rather than think he's the best ever and let myself down after he's found guilty.

the truth of the matter is that everytime someone runs a good 100m run, suspicion is raised on whether that persons on drugs. theres a known track record of it for the last 20-30 years, and for Usain to not only beat the most drugged 100m runner in historys' record (ben johnson) but smash it whilst clean, its only natural that questions are going to get asked.

if you like i can start a thread, and we can discuss it there. but unfortunately i cant post spreadseets or tables in here.

I'd love for Bolt to be clean, but when the Jamacians break personal, national and world records at an Olympics, basically coming from nowhere based on the prior Games, I have to suspect something, especially when its both men and women.

Maybe Bolt is the exception, but the Jamacians just had too good of a Games to avoid my suspicion.

Glory's Sun 12-02-2008 07:36 AM

was it that the Jamaicans had too good of a game or that the US just completely sucked ass?

Because what I saw was American teams that just sucked.

I will admit though that when I saw the 100m time I immediately thought steroids.

And yet no one is saying Michael Phelps is a cheat... wonder what the difference is there?

He might be. But the latest round of world records seems more technologically driven than drug-induced. Better suits and better pool make for faster times. Like going from cinder to synthetic tracks with better shoes made a big difference in the 60's. Also, he didn't exactly come out of nowhere to set those records like Bolt did.
