Favre going to NYJ is a done deal

Reports are coming in that GB is trading Brett Favre to the NYJ for a single pick in the draft that varies depending on how NYJ finish the season. Chad Pennington is believe to be the odd man out in NYJ and is suspected to be cut to make cap room for Favre.

The Brett Favre era in Green Bay apparently came to an end late Wednesday as the longtime Packers star quarterback was traded to the New York Jets, FoxSports.com reported.

The trade, believed to be a single draft pick that increases in value depending upon how the Jets perform during the 2008 season, was confirmed by ESPN's Michael Smith on Wednesday night.
I think that NYJ could be slightly improved by this move, they spent a lot of time in the offseason working on their O-line, along with an always underrated Thomas Jones and a couple of ok WR this could be a nice offense in the upcoming season

As someone said on another forum I frequent:

Favre in New York? ESPN just had a collective orgasm.

This is a intriguing trade to bolster a Jets team that can make the playoffs in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL. Favre surprised a lot of his critics (including me) with his statistically efficient year in 2007. I didn't think Tampa Bay would have been a good fit due to their lack of offensive weapons and that they appear to be better suited with a 'game manager' (Jeff Garcia) at the helm. Interestingly enough, Garcia and Favre are just about a year apart in age.

The obvious question is will Favre be as accurate and less interception prone in 08 as he was in 07. He is more than capable, and if it doesn't work out, the Jets are not giving up much. Shit, their increase in popularity alone is worth the deal financially. For the Packers, they get rid of a headache (not Favre personally, but sadly, thats with this situation has turned into) and trade him out of conference.

thats all I have to say. At least this is over...

Reports are coming in that John Madden was quoted as saying, "Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre Brett Favre!!!"

Yeh... it was a disgusting show. I'll give you that Thompson is a great judge of 2nd tier offensive talent, but i think he's way over-rating Rodgers. The only thing we really know about Rodgers is that he is fragile. Thompson also traded away Corey Williams to make way for another #1 pick, Justin Harrell. Harrell promptly blew out his back and looks like a complete bust.

My suspicion is that Thompson and/or McCarthy pushed Favre out at the end of 2007 to get their guy in. I don't think it sat well with Favre, who later decided to fight it, and that's what produced the drama. The "tampering", team mobile phone, and the waffling stories were false and later retracted, but they had their effect. The mood in Wisconsin is very anti-Favre. The newspapers and fans seem to be angry that Favre fought back.

I was mildly curious about Rodgers and the team until this crap came out. Now i'm hoping for the fans turn on Thompson and McCarthy, which will happen if Rodgers tanks and/or Favre has a year like last year.

As a Patriots fan.... fuck.

I wonder, however, how Brett will adjust to a new playbook. He doesn't have much time before the season starts.

Poppinjay 08-07-2008 07:23 AM

As a Broncos fan, I welcome this news. Favre may connect more with our cornerbacks than Jay Cutler does with our receivers.

Here's my take; it's settled now so I can go for it.

Favre was asked three years ago by the Packers (when Ted and Mike began after Mike Sherman destroyed us) to stay long enough to develop a franchise quarterback or return the team to the glory years; that is was an unhappy situation but if Rodgers could learn from someone, it would be him. They knew he had it in him, and they promised him that under them they would turn the team around. He accepted.

Favre, every year since then, has said "Well Fellas, I think I'm ready to pack it in" and they would say "No, Brett, we really need you to stay, we are almost there. Aaron is close but not ready, and the team is so close to being a super bowl contender. Please, please stay one more year". Finally, it reaches a point where they are a superbowl contender, Rodgers is developed, and Favre says "I'm done fellas". They responded with something like:

"We knew this was coming. You've done so much for us and you've done everything we could of ever asked of you. You're incredibly talented and we are finally at a level where we won't fail without you. We want you back but know that if you need to quit, we can make it".

That was them pushing him out the door. My only problem with it is that Favre knew it was coming. Even worse, they didn't ever actually "push him out the door" (Fuck Bus Cook is a goddamn drama queen; I always hated that douche), they just didn't beg. Favre got upset. I think that's when Favre changed from "Down home boy with a heart of gold" to "Superstar". It upset me and a lot of fans.

Then it kept getting worse. The Packers would release diplomatic and polite/respectful replies to the media and Favre would sit there and rip them apart; not the team player I wanted him to be in my heart.

And when he came back I thought "Come on guys, take him back, let him compete" which they were willing to do but he just wouldn't put his emotions aside. McCarthy is a great coach, and Ted is a diamonds in the rough GM; they've created a wonderful team. But they did it intelligently; they didn't build it around Favre.

Favre is my hero, he is a legend; he'll go down in history as one of the best quaterbacks ever (debate it all you want but he is). But this isn't all The Packer's fault. If anything, I'm siding with the Pack.

Now: Rodgers is talented. He's mobile, has a strong arm with great deep ball accuracy. He moves the pocket a little too much which will come with game experience. He reads defenses well and is a great leader. He has an amazing work ethic and a great attitude. His feet need work because his drop is a little quick and he needs to stay healthy but remember that was when Sherman had traded away their whole line that he got hurt. he reminds me a lot of Ben Rothlisbeger; except his forty is better and he his deep ball isn't as good.

He is going to be a great quarterback. If he performs badly then he does. He's still my quarterback.

Either way we have an incredible team this year (Corey Williams was disposable. He was good but we are deep and we needed a lot out of this very, very deep draft class). I think we have the chance of going far.

I'm pissed that we didn't get a Corner out of the trade though. We need a nickel badly.

As a Jets fan, I have a very unnerving feeling that he is going to flop. He has his moments, but is interception prone as is, and will now deal with what was already a less than stellar receiving setup, and that was before losing McCareins.

It also raises the point, what the hell are the Jets going to do in a year or two when he leaves AGAIN?

Forget about Clemens? He has the best to learn from; if anything this will help him very much.

Hmm...

Favre's most recent game against Denver:

21/27 for 331 yds. 2 TDs 0 INTs.

That 82 yarder in the 4th Q was particularly nice.

No Greg Jennings or James Jones to bail him out this time though.

I just finished watching the news conference and it was refreshing to hear him speak about it. I have to admit it does make me feel better about it but there is some obvious Ted Thompson hate going on with Brett.

Either way the guy is a stellar quarterback.

punker: I thought TT was a good GM until this episode. It's clear now that TT has too much ego investment in his players. This is a common fault with GMs and does a lot of them in. (See Jerry Angelo and the Cedric Benson fiasco.) TT also seems very insecure. The media manipulation, the lies, and the leaks were positively Nixonian. The Packers have hired Ari Fucking Fleischer to do their PR. Sheesh!

I totally disagree; Ted just moved forward. I don't understand why this is such a big deal for everyone. He has been threatening to leave for years now, he does, they ask him to reconsider, he says no, they move forward. Why does that make him the douche? Anyone who can do what he did in the past couple years gets a tip of my hat.

I haven't forgotten about him, but he was a mediocre college QB, and he's been in the NFL a few years, and still can't win a starting position over Pennington, who is a mediocre QB. If he replaces Favre, his performance will be fair at best.

Halx 08-07-2008 06:08 PM

Favre was the golden boy.. then he had to come back and now all this drama is ruining his legacy. Well, at least my friends are excited.

Jenna 08-07-2008 09:05 PM

I'm still in denial about the whole fucking mess of things.

The Jets aren't planning for the future.

QuasiMondo 08-08-2008 01:02 PM

As much as I want to hate this deal...I can't.

Looking at the worst case scenario for this season, if Favre gets hurt, they still have Clemens. Not the most accurate QB around, but with Pennington's lack of an arm, it's highly probable that Clemens would've been one good tackle away from getting the starting job if things stayed as they were.

At every step of the way, the Jets have to ask themselves, "Is where we at worth giving up a draft pick?" The way those conditional picks are setup in the trade, the answer is, "Yes." As of right now, the Jets gave up a 4th round pick. Helluva deal when you consider that the Saints gave up a 2nd and 5th rounder to acquire Jeremy Shockey, and we're still not sure if he's HOF caliber.

Should Favre take 80 percent of the snaps this season, it becomes a 3rd round pick. Still not a bad tradeoff compared to the Shockey trade, or even the Jason Taylor trade.

If the Jets make the playoffs, it's a 2nd rounder. A mediocre Favre gets them a wild card and if he's anything close to what he was last season, they have a divisional spot.

If the Jets make the Super Bowl it's a first round. If you're building up to get your team into the Super Bowl and you trade for a player who can shortcut the rebuilding process at the cost of a first rounder, then that's a no-brainer. I'm sure there's a player or two out there who would sacrifice their first born to get a shot at the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Assuming that the most likely scenario is Brett Favre taking them to the playoffs, the question becomes this: Is two years of Favre worth a second round pick? I still think yes. If it doesn't pan out, you still have your first round pick that you can include in a trade package to get a quarterback. You also have the bonus of having Kellen Clemens learn under both Pennington and Favre. If he can't learn from these two guys, then there's no hope for him, and you're really no worse off than you were trying to hold on for Clemens for two years before you admit that he's not the guy to lead your offense.

If you really think about it, that conditional pick is what makes this such a screaming deal for the Jets.

Up until Favre, every other offseason acquisition they made WAS planning from the future, starting with the o-line.
