Juan Gonzalez, a two-time American League MVP, could be headed to the National League for the first time in his career.

The Texas Rangers have made an agreement in principle to trade Gonzalez to the Montreal Expos, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.

Details of the trade were expected to be announced after tonight's game between the Rangers and A's.

The Rangers announced they will not use Gonzalez in tonight's game but gave no further details.

Gonzalez has a no-trade clause in his contract. The outfielder has 72 hours to accept or turn down the trade.

Gonzalez told team officials he would not have any immediate comment about his situation.

Rangers manager Buck Showalter confirmed the trade during his regular gathering with reporters before tonight's game. General manager John Hart didn't immediately return phone messages.

"We could have gone under the radar, but we wanted to be up front and give Juan the time he's earned by his contract situation," Showalter said. "We could have used him tonight, but we won't."

Texas traded outfielder Ruben Sierra to the New York Yankees on June 6 for a minor-leaguer, and the team is expected to make more moves before the July 31 trading deadline. Several teams have expressed interest in Rangers closer Ugueth Urbina, and starter Ismael Valdes and outfielder Carl Everett are also potential movers. All are eligible for free agency after this season.

"It's an unfortunate part of the game," said Showalter, in his first season at Texas' manager. "You are always looking to make your club better short-term and long-term, and help yourself financially. But sometimes it depends on what order those are in."

Gonzalez is in the second year of his $24 million, two-year deal he signed to return to Texas before the 2002 season. The Rangers would likely pay most of Gonzalez's remaining salary.

Gonzalez is hitting .286 with 18 homers and 50 RBI.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Interesting. I would think MLB would be running the Expos on the cheap since they own the team. I guess Juan Gonzales will make for a marquis name soon as the Expos find a permanent home.

Well I'm sure part of the deal will be Texas picking up a big chunk of his remaining salary...

This is interesting, because of the aforementioned MLB supposedly running the Expos on the cheap. But a contending team may drive the price up for potential suiters....

Also interesting is Juan's no trade clause. Which he would have to waive. And I'd be surprised if he did.

I would be very surprised if Juan agreed to this trade.

He might though, he's going to a team that actually has a chance at contending, and is also going to play in Puerto Rico about 20 more times this year.

Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

Who cares? I mean, seriously, this guy is one of the biggest jackasses in baseball. He should trade himself right outta the league, no one would miss him. All you'd see is alot less whining about why he's not playing in the all star game.

Well.....

HOUSTON -- Texas slugger Juan Gonzalez rejected a trade to the Montreal Expos on Friday, exercising a no-trade clause in his contract three days after the teams agreed to a deal.

Just hope the Expos turn the pages on this one and look elsewere. I can't believe some G.M. put no trade clause in contract. Players dont have enough powers??

For Montreal, i just hope Vlad come back fast and healthy.

I would like to see him go to Montreal. The Expos are a good team that gets no respect and I think he could bring alot more interest to the team. Hopefully they will be in Puerto Rico next year where they can get some of the respect they deserve. I doubt he will accept the trade though.

Take it from a Tiger's fan: If Juan doesn't want to be there, he'll dog it, fake injuries, whine and pout until he's let go! Good luck Expos. He sucks!
