"Embarrassed' Bears cut Tank Johnson" - Setup?

Looks like someone had it in for him - I mean have you ever heard of "DUI Impaired to the Slightest Degree". There is a set limit on how much alcohol you are allowed to have in your system and still legally operate a vehicle. Either he ecliped this limit or he didn't. And if he didn't then there should be no reprocussions. The Bears decided to let him go because he got pulled over late one night - kinda over the top, no?

Anyone else in agreement?

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Tank Johnson was released Monday by the Chicago Bears, who are "upset and embarrassed" by the defensive tackle's legal troubles.

Johnson was waived three days after he was pulled over by police in Arizona. He already had been suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 season for violating probation on a gun charge. He spent two months in jail and was released in May.

"We are upset and embarrassed by Tank's actions last week," general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. "He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't, and we have decided to move on."

Police in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert said Johnson was stopped for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone at 3:30 a.m. Friday and the officer made observations that led him to believe Johnson was impaired.

Sgt. Andrew Duncan, a police spokesman, said Johnson was arrested for "DUI Impaired to the Slightest Degree" but was released without being booked or charged.

Duncan said Johnson was taken to the Gilbert police station, where officials drew blood for a blood-alcohol content test before his release. He described Johnson as "very cooperative."

I'm a rabid Bears fan, and I know that they're a better team with him on the field. That said, he's had quite a few run ins with the law, and this happened within a short time of promising the commissioner of the league that there was nothing to worry about. The higher ups on the team went to bat with the commissioner for him, promising that he had changed and wouldn't have any problems whatsoever. He just made all of them look like idiots. A few months ago, he had also gone before Jerry Angelo and made a series of promises that these sort of incidents would never happen again, and those promises are what kept him from being cut before. At this point, he's becoming too much of a distraction for the rest of the team. it's really a shame to lose him, but he did it to himself. He knew that he was on thin ice, and he decided to ignore the warnings.

I'm with Spec on this one, especially the Bears fan part.

Tank did this to himself. I was talking with some other fans today, and we all agree that he should have known better. If he is charged with something as a result of this, it would violate his parole too.

Tank will be missed, but we really don't need those kinds of distractions. No team does.

Hey maybe the Lions will pick him up and Kitna can predict 12 wins next year because Tank's on board!

Johnson, along with Pacman Jones and Michael Vick are filth.

End of story.

Commissioner Goddell should enact a lifetime ban on them effective immediately.

After two years have passed with absolutely no indiscretions whatsoever, and I mean none, as in, you don't even look at a woman the wrong way, then they can apply for reinstatement, which will be gained with said players agreeing to play that season for free. their contracts and any and all endorsement monies will be given to NFL charities.

this shit has got to stop, but Johnson/Jones/Vick clearly don;t give a fuck about that fact that they are singlehandedly driving the NFL's image into the scum-encrusted sewers.

As an additional punishment Vick will have to face one of his fighting dogs in the ring for five minutes with no option to retaliate.

Oh, and as for you bears fans, you sicken me and this is coming from someone who loved Walter Payton and who has three Payton throwback jerseys as well as a Dick Butkus throwback.

You sound exactly like those New York Knicks fans who welcomed that douchebag Latrell Sprewell with open arms and made light of the fact that he had tried to murder his coach. It's like as long as he performs well on the court/field, he can do whatever the fuck he wants off of it.

No, they can't. I'm not talking about being a role model to young kids, that's something a kids own parents should do. I'm talking about being an upstanding member of the community and a decent human being.

Jones/Johnson/Vick are none of those. They are filth.

Come again? All Spec and I have done is agree with the Bears. How in the world does that earn this kind of response? Please tell me who got hurt by what Tank did. His bodyguard or whoever? Sorry, that was a gangbanger, not Tank. Tank's not a good guy, and I'm glad that he's gone, but he didn't hurt anyone physically off the field.

And Vick hasn't been charged with any crimes at this point, so you're rushing to judgement a bit there.

Yeah, good luck getting that to work with the Players' Union.

Wow. Pretty much every fan I know has said the same thing, "we're better with him, but he had to go." How the fuck is that being apologetic for him? Seriously? Because we're not ready to put a bullet in him, we're his great defenders? You really need to calm down and reread the posts from Jazz and I. We both said that he had to go, so I can't figure out why you're going off like this.

Climb down from your soapbox. Nobody's defending Johnson, and as I recall, nobody exactly welcomed Sprewell with open arms to New York because they had to ship off fan favorite John Starks to acquire him.

You can't be that naive and delusional.

Seriously, you can't.

Vick hasn't denied any of the allegations. That's proof enough of his involvement and guilt.

I do think that Vick is guilty, that said, non-denial isn't proof of anything. I haven't denied being involved in the Kennedy assassination, but that doesn't make me the second gunman on the grassy knoll. He hasn't been charged yet. Until there's some sort of proof that he was involved, you can't just indict or punish on what you believe happened. The world doesn't work that way, and to think it does is "naive and delusional."

You obviously know something that you aren't telling us. Clearly you're much closer to this issue than you've ever let on, so I'm going to give the Virginia State Police and the FBI your information so that you can come clean on what you know. These kinds of statements mean that you have definite knowledge of Vick's guilt, and I can only hope that you don't get brought up on obstruction of justice charges. You haven't denied that you aren't intimately involved, and the evidence is laid out in this very thread. You can expect a knock on your door any minute now....

Either that or you've just decided that he's guilty, convinced yourself that you're infallible and thrown around accusations that you can't possibly hope to support. And been rude about it to boot.

Bears fan here, also. Just how stupid is Tank? He's already suspended for the first 8 games of the season. The Bears HAD to replace him with a quality player for those games, anyway. Tank knew that and yet he still placed himself in a situation that wasn't proper. Its not how much he had in his system, its a continuation of a lifestyle that the Bears organization wants no part off. I hope for his sake he gets his shit straightened out but I question if he will.
