"I like to be around people who keep expectations low," the president joked.

The Hurricanes weren't picked to do much before the 2005-06 season. They surprised everyone, winning 52 games, posting a 112-point season and winning their first Stanley Cup title in June over the Edmonton Oilers.

Carolina players, owners and coaches were cheered in the East Room by fans and young hockey players who gazed at the massive, silver Stanley Cup displayed next to the president.

Bush said players have taken the trophy overseas, to a mountaintop in Colorado and on a roller-coaster ride at Universal Studios. They have used it as a popcorn holder, a feed trough for a Kentucky Derby winner, a cereal bowl for corn pops, and for a baptism, he said.

"One of the interesting things about this team is they have a - they've got a sign in their locker room that says: It's not about me. It's about the guy in front of me,"' Bush said.

"One of the reasons they're here is because they understand that when you serve something greater than yourself - the team or your community - you become a true champ."

Does anyone know why World Series/Superbowl/NBA/Stanley Cup Champion teams meet the President? I don't really get it. I wouldn't want to meet the President... not because I'm Canadian or that I hate Bush, it's just not high on my list of priorities. I also have little interest in meeting the Prime Ministier - any national leader for that matter. Maybe that's why I see this as kind of silly.

The overwhelming majority of Americans would love to meet the President regardless of their political views or the Presidents politics. I do not agree with the policies or practices of George W. Bush but I would love the chance to meet him.

It's a quite different psyche being Canadian then American and how we look at our respective country, patriotism, and politics. As one of my professors once explained to me, he asked a Canadian classroom how many of them were willing to die for Canada and the reaction was laughter. If you ask that to Americans, their hands go up.

I'd just flip him off and then go to DisneyLand.

The overwhelming majority of NHL players are Canadian and European though. Why don't they meet the Prime Minister instead of the President?

I assume it is because the NHL primarily functions in America. However, if one of the Canadian based NHL teams won the Stanley Cup in the future, I am sure they would have a chance to meet the Prime Minister of Canada. I would guess that has already happened in the past.

I guess that makes sense, Cross-Over. But where did it originate from? I just don't understand why winning a championship means you get to meet the President. Does the World Cup championship team meet their country's leader, or is this just a North American thing?

I believe France's football team met up with Chirac after they lost in the final... I'd wager Italy did as well.
