Remember when Jason Grimlsey got busted earlier this year? He gave up the names of several players that used either steroids or HGH. The affidavit he signed had the names blacked out but the Times was leaked a copy of the full affidavit. It named Clemens and Pettite as HGH users and Tejada, Jay Gibbons, and Brian Roberts as steroid users.

Sad news for sure but I'm not shocked a bit.

In June, federal agents searched reliever Jason Grimsley's home in Arizona after the pitcher admitted using human growth hormone, steroids and amphetamines. Grimsley was later released by the Arizona Diamondbacks and suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball, and has not played since then.

In a 20-page search warrant affidavit signed by IRS Special Agent Jeff Novitzky, the Times reported, he said Grimsley identified other players who had used drugs. Those names were blacked out when the document was released.

The Times said an anonymous source with access to the document -- minus the crossouts -- let the newspaper see it, but kept the copy. The Times said a second source who had identified the other players provided additional details about the document.

According to the affidavit, the Times said, Grimsley told investigators Clemens and Pettitte "used athletic performance-enhancing drugs."

The affidavit also alleged Grimsley told federal agents that Roberts, Gibbons and Tejada "took anabolic steroids."

Novitzky also was the lead investigator in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative probe. Two BALCO officials and Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, served jail time after guilty pleas in that investigation.

Grimsley has complained to friends, the Times said, that federal agents attributed statements to him that he did not make.

"I'm told he has denied saying all of this," Randy Hendricks, who represents Clemens and Pettitte, told The Associated Press on Saturday night. "It's an agent's recollection about a conversation he had about conjecture."

"I've grown weary of having to defend [Clemens] from innuendo and conjecture about every six months for the last several years when he's complied with all of the rules and regulations," Hendricks said. "Andy is just surprised and stunned, and has no knowledge of any such activity."

Clemens and Pettitte pitch for Houston. The Astros won 5-4 at Atlanta on Saturday night.

Tejada, Gibbons and Roberts had left the clubhouse in Boston after Baltimore's 5-4 victory Saturday night when an AP reporter sought comment.

"We do not have any comment at this time," Orioles spokeswoman Monica Pence said. "We have not seen it, so we do not have anything on it."

Along with the federal probe, baseball hired former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell to investigate the use of steroids.

All major league players are tested at least twice a year for banned drugs. There is no test for HGH, but it is banned by baseball.

My only question is, they test for anabolic steroids, and as far as I know that specific PED isn't one of the ones able to be hid by some sort of masking agent, so why didn't they test positive?

Also, this is a critical point...

I don't think he said they are still taking them, just that they did at some point. Everybody was given plenty of advance notice that they were able to get clean before the testing began. I don't think this is the first time someone has accused Tejada either. Didn't Palmero say something about him?

I don't think its likely, but it could be that mlb suppressed some of the names that tested positive. How is it that the only thing close to a big star that tested positive was Freddy Garcia?

Of course he's claiming he never said any of that. He sang like a bird and ratted out his former teammates. They all hate him now. Sure, he never said any of that but somehow he signed the affidavit that states that he said that.

I'm not sure about Pettitte, but I am fairly convinced about the others.

Why would usage by any specific player be a surprise? Remember, steroids aren't just used to bulk up.

One interesting thing to note is that Jason Grimsley was getting his HGH through the guy who used to be Albert Pujols' personal trainer. Funny how that part is never mentioned.

"As I have said all along, and as Andy and Roger said quite clearly yesterday, they have never used performance-enhancing drugs," Randy Hendricks, the agent for Pettitte and Clemens, said Monday.

He added that Clemens "signed up to play for his country in the World Baseball Classic this year and submitted to Olympic standard testing, including blood work, and then went out and had another good year for the Astros."

Grimsley played with Clemens and Pettitte on the New York Yankees, and is now out of baseball. The reliever has admitted using a variety of banned substances and was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball.

it's sad that they have to use those to improve their games and end up having surgery when they are old.
