Idiot.
You wear a helmet while playing football, right? That nose tackle is pretty big, but he's not as heavy or as fast as even a Geo Metro, to say nothing of the Chrysler New Yorker that you actually bounced your head off of. Think next time, Ben. (And yes, I thought of BigBen first as well, but I wasn't on TFP at the time, so I figured it out pretty quickly. )

"I was in a motorcycle accident? Well, that would explain why I was in such pain on Saturday. It couldn't have been the 18 beers + Shots I drank." I have an EMT buddy who calls them "Donorcycles". You can guess why.

It's sort of ironic, that Terry Bradshaw told him to ride it when he retires after the Winslow accident, and his own coach told him to wear a helmet. It's always someone elses fault, not your own... I guess we'll have to wait and see who's fault the accident was now.
Hope he gets well soon, we need him!! Go Steelers. |

As a Browns fan and having gone through this with *ahem* Mr. Winslow.... I wholeheartedly can relate to the Steelers fans.... we may hate each other on the field but when the Modells took the heart out of Cleveland Pittsburgh fans worked every bit as hard to get football back into Cleveland.... (maybe it was just because you wanted a team you knew you could beat.... but....)
And as a fellow Ohio native, born and bred..... my heart and deepest sympathies go to Ben and his family.

His surgeons just had a news conference. All facial fractures were successfully fused, and there are no brain or spinal injuries or any other serious injuries that require surgery.
However, they also said that the family asked them to give out this info only and ABC still reports that his knees may have been wracked.

It's a shame that he got hurt, but I have no sympathy for him.
I don't believe in helmet laws either, but I believe in personal responsibility, and if he can't wear a helmet on his own, he deserves whatever happens to him. I hope he loses some part of his career, not because of who he is or what team he plays for, but because apparently we still need more examples of athletes who have their careers destroyed by acting in an immature, irresponsible way.

Some athletes even haev a restriction in their contract against riding motorcycles (Jeff Kent anyone???).
The Steelers should be pissed at him, he is paid to be their quarterback and remain healthy. They invested in him and he goes around riding a motorcycle without a helmet. This is where natural selection usually takes course.

Frank Mir, the former heavyweight champion of the UFC, fucked himself over from a motorcycle crash. Ever since then, I've been hoping no more athletes I like get hurt.
Luckily none have yet.

Motorcycle accidents are the second leading cause of spinalcord injuries,he is one lucky sob. Wearing a helmet does make a difference! As was stated earlier, he doesn't play football without one. Dumbass! He should spend a day with me, he wouldn't ever ride again.

Does it nullify his contract then?
I think something similar happened to Aaron Boone (NY Yankees). He hurt himself playing pick-up basketball and that voided his contract or something. In any case, he was traded or something. Last edited by jorgelito; 06-13-2006 at 03:24 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Motorcycle riders rarely come out unharmed from a high speed collision with a car whether they are wearing a helmet or not. I don't know how fast he was going when the car turned left in front of him but I doubt a helmet would have done him much good if he was speeding.
I guess world class athletes are by nature somewhat risk takers but you would think they would cool it at least in their prime earning years. |

Ah such is the curse of Cleveland......
Our biggest rival's star player rides a motorcycle, without a helmet doing anywhere between 30-60mph, takes a headrer into a Chrysler New Yorker, lands face first into the pavement and looks to start the season with minor injuries (except for that facial rebuild thing). Our star, rides a motorcycle with a helmet on IN A PARKING LOT, doing less than 25mph, crashes into some soft bushes, injuries his knees is is not only out for last season but looks to be a question mark this season. And to show the curse is real..... Ben had the morning interview with Bill Wills on Cleveland's WTAM..... then crashed.

jsplkleiisnepsmk". I belong to an organization made up of about 98% bikers and mostly middle aged, some past 60(or maybe the wind in their faces for so long just make them look that way, but anyway...), their number one mantra is 'safety'. The best advice, 'ride like you're invisible to the cagers, because most times, you are.' He was riding the fastest production motorcycle made and without a helmet?? When asked about that before this happened, he remarked he liked the state of PA's lack of helmet laws because it made him 'feel free when riding.' Bet that hospital bed is a real freeing experience... BTW, his contract, regarding something like this, discourages 'reckless behavior', but does not have specific reference ie; wearing helmets.

It's becoming more and more commonplace to spell out the activities the athletes can't do on the contracts. I know from watching Sportcenter yesterday that the NBA had a spree of that when some dude wrecked himself. I'm sure it will spread to the other sports as these things continue.
And, as an aside, anyone who is on a motorcycle and doesn't use a helmet is a fucking moron. If these people can't be bothered to think of their own safety, they should think of all the people affected by an injury should they have one.
