The Possi-Bulls
I was quite impressed with the way the Bulls handled themselves against the Heat in the NBA Playoffs first round and it got me thinking about the team they could have had, had they not got involved in some pretty stupid trades over the years. The team I came up with was:
Kirk Hinrich Ron Artest Elton Brand Luol Deng Eddy Curry/Brad Miller With Ben Gordon, Chris Duhon, Jamal Crawford and Andres Nocioni on the bench. Seems like a rock solid contender to me. I wonder how much they would give to be able to go back in time and stop themselves from trading Brand for the bust that Tyson Chandler has turned out to be. They also essentially traded Artest and Miller for Michael Sweetney. Have they got the worst trade history of the last 5 years or has someone else made some even more bone-headed decisions? |

Tyson Chandler is a good shot blocker and excellent rebounder. He would easily average over 10 rebounds per game if he logged starter's minutes. That being said, it was a terrible trade. Chicago thought they were getting another KG in Chandler, because there is no other reason to trade Brand who averaged 20 and 10 in his two years with the Bulls.
They didn't exactly know what they had in Artest and Miller (Miller wasn't even drafted). They swapped them both for mainly Jalen Rose. At the time Rose was around 29, and playing great basketball for a NBA Finals team. He was shooting a good percentage, passing, rebounding. A versatile scoring guard/small forward. In hindsight, the trade was terrible, but at the time, it didn't look too bad. I still like the Bull's young nucleus. They robbed New York in the Curry trade, and they will have a top 5 pick (slated in the #2 spot mathematically) in this year's draft courtesy New York. Yes, Curry is a true center who shoots a high percentage. However, he hasn't proved to be a good rebounder despite his size, and Sweetney (received in the trade) shoots a high percentage himself. Curry was due for a big pay day, but he had a questionable heart condition and Skiles wasn't happy with his work ethic |

The single biggest trade mistake the Bulls made was the Brand-Chandler deal.
Brand is a class act (I've met him, and have his autograph on my business card), and gives you 20-10 and solid effort every night. Can you imagine this year's Bulls w/o Chandler, but with Brand? They'd be playing the Nets right now.
