Every sport: In the Finals, and you are the back-up

SETUP:From the Stanley Cup thread, and Rolo's injury in Game 1. Conk came in, and the game was lost.

Every sport has a possible situation like this: Quarterback, Striker, Pitcher, OTHER LEADER OF A TEAM.

Situation:
A star player is hurt, and you are one of the backups. It is the final game. You have a 50/50 chance of success.
Your teammates are not confident in your abilities, but you are.
Your teammates want the other backup to be sent in. They have voiced their opinion.
You know that you can do a better job than the other player, but you need to have the team's support to push the odds in your favour.
If given the chance, do you:

A. Bow out gracefully, throwing your support behind the other backup, and therefore not accepting any blame in a possible loss? This also means that you will not share the true spirit of the possible win.

B. Advocate to the coach, and get in there and do your best. The team will be better with you out on the field. This will lead to a 50% chance of failure.

C. Advocate to the players to get behind you. Confidence in your ability will allow the team to function better, and thus possibly improve the odds. If they don't, and the other backup is selected, the chosen backup's confidence will be shaken due to your lack of support.

Hmmm. INteresting.

I am not the kind of guy to stand back.
I am not the kind of guy to hurt someone else's confidence.

I guess I would have to choose B.

What do you folks think?

P.S.: Mods, if this is a stupid idea for a thread, please lock it, delete it, or make fun of me. I enjoy humour as much as the next person.

Fantastic thread idea!!!

In the specific situation from the Stanly Cup thread, I'd go with B. The coach is well established with the players and there is a lot of respect there. If the coach backs you, the team is more likyle to back you out of their respect for the coach. If, however, we are talking about a different hypothetical situation then I'd go for C. A team is only a strong as it's ability to be a team. If I am better than someone else and am more likely to be successful, I expect my team mates to understand that and support me. I know I'd do the same for them. There is no way I'm going to back down, though (unless the other person is obviously better).

I go B, then C.

I am a straight up guy. I am confident in my abilities. If I realistically feel that I am the best option to win, I go tell the coach that, and explain why. Then I tell him that I'm telling the teammates the same thing, and I do. I am straight with everyone and lay it out there.

If, after it is all said and done, I'm not the choice, I then become the biggest cheerleader for the other guy. But not until I bust my butt trying to BE the guy first.

I don't play sports but the kind of person I am I would do a bit of B and C... I work on both the coach and the players.

In the end, I would kick ass and take names.

I agree with C. Leave the coaches out of it and talk to the team. Those the the moments athletes live for. I could never let one slip past me. I would regret not trying more than I ever would regret the loss. As far as the team, ultimately it is the coaches decision so maybe Id play a bit of B after C.
