In the specific situation from the Stanly Cup thread, I'd go with B. The coach is well established with the players and there is a lot of respect there. If the coach backs you, the team is more likyle to back you out of their respect for the coach. If, however, we are talking about a different hypothetical situation then I'd go for C. A team is only a strong as it's ability to be a team. If I am better than someone else and am more likely to be successful, I expect my team mates to understand that and support me. I know I'd do the same for them. There is no way I'm going to back down, though (unless the other person is obviously better).
