when i was a kid back in the mid 60's, maybe 10 - 11 years old, my gramps and his friend took me on a fishing trip to baker lake in northern maine

the camp we had was next to a couple of others... the camp next to ours had a gang of guys all hootin' and hollerin' all night long

the next morning we went out and got some brookie fishing in - came back for lunch and went out again - came back for dinner and these guys are just getting up

there was a camera crew setting up and this "gang of guys" turned out to be curt gowdy, phil harris, ted williams, and bud leavitt

they were gonna do an episode of american sportsman brought to you by sears/roebuck who ted williams was a spokesman for

so, there's gowdy standing in front of the camera saying something like "here we are folks on a beautiful saturday morning at baker lake in northern maine... we'll be getting in some brook trout fishing when we come back after this word from our sponsors..."

it was 7:00 pm and the sunrise they were shooting was the sunset

i did get a ted williams rod and reel from them before we left and still have it today

true story - no BS

around here he was an icon and well known for his new england style humor

I remember watching MLB as kid growing up. Curt was one of the best. He was
a class person to watch and listen to. Thanks for remembering.
