Cunt.
Is the word "cunt" allowed on the forums? I know a lot of people don't like it, but I find it way less demeaning than words like "pussy" and "cootchie" and a lot less clinical than "vulva." Cunt is my favorite term for my lady bits, and I like the idea of reclaimed language, but I've yet to use it here at Tilted. I'd hate to offend.
So here's my question: What do you think of the word cunt? Is it an acceptable term? Do you mind if I use it when posting, as long as there's no intentional offence?

Agreed. I don't find it offensive at all. It'd be obvious if there was intended offence in the usage of the word. As long as you keep it as simply a word to describe body part (not fellow TFPers, haha), I see no problem with it.

I've always understood "cunt" to be one of the most vulgar terms associated with that part of the body, like "snatch" or "twat." It's also commonly used as a pejorative. It won't offend me, but it will distract me and most other people from what you're trying to communicate.

I'd be careful of using it, if only to sanitize the forum for those that access from work. Such words can flag a lot of users for incorrect use of internet access.
But that said, what the hell did you expect in the Sexuality forum anyway? :P On some other forums I visit, we've tended towards the FCUK version of words. (For those that don't know, FCUK is French Connection UK, a clothes reatailer that plays mostly on it's name for advertising. It's about all the appeal they have, the clothes are shit and overpriced.) cnut is the typical form we've started to use. Similar to the use of the word 'pron' to bypass filters. |

To me its the WORST word anyone has ever come up with....I cant stand to see it used to describe a body part, or as a word to describe a female. Its degrading in both ways, IMO. I literally cringe anytime I see/hear it.

My thoughts ... how can ANYONE be offended by a word?
The connotations behind the word are an entirely different matter. I feel that most people are just reacting to the fact that society has told them that a word is offensive. But hey, this is the Sexuality forum not the Philosophy forum. |

I very rarely find any word offensive. Rather the reaction I have to words like 'cunt' or even 'fuck' for that matter, is that I find myself looking down on people who over use them. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good "FUCK YOU!' from time to time, as an accent in conversation. Further to that point nothing is more arousing than a proper use of 'cunt' when used between two adults in a sweaty situation.
However, it's those little fuckers on the train and other public spaces that seem to not yet understand that some words should be used sparingly, or not at all, when in a crowd. So go ahead, use 'em. Just don't make a whole post out of 'em.

Nearly the only time I see people use cunt as a vulgarity/insult is from one woman aimed at another woman. It seems to me that guys don't attach the same weight to the word that women do, which has always puzzled me.

I've decided that I won't be using "cunt" in the forums, for two reasons.
1. Johnny_Rotten and WillyPete make a good points in their posts. I'd hate to cause more work for the Mods than they already have. 2. I told myself that if anyone who responded was offended, then I'd stop using it while posting here. I really enjoy all of your distant company, and I'd hate to be a thorn in anyone's side. Thanks for the speedy response! Sorry that so many of you have such a bad taste for the word.

It's not the word's fault that it's attached to an asshole. There are other words that are perceived in this light and there are people who want these words removed from the dictionary. I do not like revisionist tactics like that. So I'm of the opinion that we need to start carefully examining our reactions to things like language and art and being VERY specific about what we find offensive. No word by itself is offensive; not even the meaning of a word should be considered offensive. Only how that word is used in a specific example should be considered offensive. |

I find it strange that you think "cunt" is less harsh than "pussy", but to each his/her own I suppose.

I just think that pussy is degrading. I like kittens and all, but having my bits called after them doesn't seem to fit. And, unlike most of you I suppose, I hear "pussy" being used as an insult way more than cunt. *shrugs*

Personally I think we need to invent a heap of new swear words we can be offended by. People these days take most swear words in their stride since they're all over the movies and video games. The 'C' word will one day take it's place in everyday language and just be another 'Damn' or even 'Bitch'.. What am I going to call the guy that cuts me off in his car then?

"I'm a really big fan of cunt over words like pussy, and especially, vagina. The word has this great guttural sound that lets you get right into it. Pussy and vagina are really dirty words - you only ever hear really greasy men saying things like that. Cunt lets women be vulgar without being derogatory."
That is the single most inane quotation I've ever read. Every guy I've ever met (in my peer group, I mean) uses the word "pussy" all the time, and, while I know some hugely sketchy guys, I like to think that they don't compose the entire spread of people I know. And I never hear anyone but doctors or people who are deliberately clinical use the word vagina. It's almost never used in porn or erotica that I can come up with. Maybe I'm just out of the loop on who is using vagina and for what purpose. Oh, and to weigh in on the conversation, I've gone back and forth about cunt. I had a really good friend who suddenly started calling everything he saw a cunt. Literally couldn't get a sentance out of his mouth without using the word. That, in addition to the fact that I've only ever heard it used as a very derogatory word put it low on my list. I suppose if a girl wants to talk about herself that way or use it in erotica, that's fine with me, but I'm not a big fan of just hearing it. |

How in the hell is that a negative statement? I consider it to be rather positive myself. And it's a whole lot easier to say than "My girlfriend has a vulva, vagina, labia, and clitoris." I object to referring to any person as being just a single body part, a woman has a cunt, but she is not a cunt. I find it offensive when women are reffered to as a hot piece of ass, a nice rack, a pair of legs, or anything else, it is the idea behind the statement, not the words used that are offensive.

Words only have as much power as people give them. If someone's going to be offended, it doesn't really matter what word is used - they'll find a reason. What's important is the intent behind the message, not the medium used to convey the message. I mean, who's offended by fingers? No one I know, but people get pissed when given the bird. Why? It's the insult itself that offends, see?

I don't use the word, but whenever I hear it all I can think of is, "DAMN!! I can't believe he/she just said that." I'm not offended by it, but I have heard that it is the worst possible thing to call a woman. I guess its the equivalent of the N-word to an African American.

My two cents:
I'd never call a girl a cunt because I can see why they would find it offensive. That's not even a word I save for the people that piss me off the most, I just don't use it. Now my guy friends, I've been known to call them cunts, pussies, etc. just because for some reason it cracks me up. Mind you it's not something I'd call anyone but a guy friend who knows I'm not serious. I hate the word pussy for some reason and personally would choose cunt over it when talking dirty with the girlfriend, but I'm not really one for having conversation like that with the girlfriend, so it's not normally a problem. I just go with a nice neutral "special area"
