I know what you mean.. Ironically though, music is in the performing arts, so at some point you want people to hear you. right? most people do at least.

Hot damn, someone pushed the right button to get a long response out of me. I have a few things to say here;

I started playing guitar for just that. Playing guitar. I dont do it for attention, and I don't do it for sex. I started playing guitar 4 years ago, because my father is a guitarist, and I wanted to learn as well. As soon as I began to play, I found playing guitar to be a wonderful experience. In the 19 odd years of my life thus far, I have gained a profound appreciation for music. The sounds move me. I can feel emotion in every chord, in every melody. Music is what moves me. And that is why I play guitar.

The dude playing an acoustic guitar under a tree is a horrible stereotype. We don't do that. Not real guitarists. I practice in my room. I jam with friends. I don't sit under a tree and play pleasant chords. And assuming that all guitarists do this, and saying guitarists are pretentious because of this is BS. Its stereotypical, and rather bigoted. Being passionate about what I do, hearing stereotypes such as this evokes a very negative reaction from me. To me, what some of you are saying is just as bad as racial slurs and stereotypes.

If by the odd chance I do play outside, I don't consider myself pretentious, and do you know why? Because I sit on a bench, with headphones on, playing along with music with my unamplified electric guitar. I'm not making any noise, I'm not making a scene, all I'm doing is practicing outside because it is nice outside. But I'm outside, so I must be pretentious, right?

The people who do these things are not real guitarists. They are actors is college films. Perfect example, the dude on the stairs in Animal House. Poseur. And if they aren't actors in college films, they are idiots who think the the tactics of the dude on the stairs will be successful.

Moral of the story; I play guitar. Guitar players by nature are pretentious by nature apparently. So because I play guitar, I must be a pretentious attention whore. Its not at all possible that I have a profound love of everything that is music. Some people should think before they speak.

i've picked up an acoustic guitar a few months back (thanks to the advice of the tfpers on the music board) and have been teaching myself ever since. I totally love music and the instrument and really enjoy playing. My girlfriend loves to listen to me play guitar and I was wondering if you have any advice in regards to romantic songs to play. Thanks a lot!

But Elwoodblues...you DO get sex because you play the guitar ;)
Well..not just that, but remember that night we went to your Aunt's house and you played...oooo baby :-D

Anyways, maybe I should have been clearer. I only find it hott when people are not playing for attention. And when they are good. My first encounters with Elwood were in our music theory class. A lot of times we wouldn't be doing anything and he'd have his guitar with him because he was in jazz band. He'd practice what they played in jazz band or just play whatever, but it was in a quiet, introverted kind of way. And although he did get my attention, it wasn't intentional because he didn't spend all his time showing off to the rest of us (or he would have played louder) and he wouldn't have spent so much time trying to teach me the things that he played.

I've never had any interest from the ladies based on my guitar playing...maybe that's an indication of needing lessons.
But I know what you mean, a woman who plays guitar, or plays guitar and sings is 10x sexier, right off the bat.

I am learning to play guitar. I have two, a yamaha accoustic steel string, and a Fender Squier Fat Strat.

Unfortunately for you, I'm a girl. So the question is, are girls who play (electric) guitars hot?

Been there. My boyfriend plays guitar and I think he plays when we're together in his room because he knows I'll want his attention and try to distract him in interesting ways. :love:
