STD's?

Well, Im 19 and have had unprotected sex a couple of times.
I guess condoms havent been preached enough on me or something, because if there isnt one around "ill pull out" :)
How common would it be for me to have an STD?
are they all visible? how long after?
What would the best way to get checked be?
I've heard some crazy stories on guys getting checked.. It involved sticking something up my ummm. manhood?
thanks any info would be great!

First of all, go out and buy some condoms, they aren't that expensive and they solve SO many problems; hell, if there's a branch of planned parenthood near you you might even be able to get some for free (I'm associated with the Planned Parenthood group here and we hand the things out all over campus for free). As for the test, the easiest and cheapest way is to go give blood; it won't catch everything, but they're fairly thorough as far as screening blood, and if they find anything they'll call you. Seeing your doctor (or some of the people at planned parenthood) is probably the best way to get information though, and I'm sure they can do more complete tests.
Keep in mind that most STD's aren't visible, especially the really nasty ones (that can take years to show symptoms), and even things like genital worts don't exhibit any signs in the majority of people carrying the virus (HPV or genital worts are actually extremely common, I've heard as high as 30% of the population carries the virus). As far as the crazy stories, I've never heard of anything like that, but then I've only had blood tests done (which I have done before each partner and require them to have done as well, it's a good practice to get in to).

Question:
Will a condom protect from 100% of STDs with a high (99%?) rate of success?

No they won't. HPV is spread through body fluids, including sweat, which means it can be transfered even if you use a condom. I'm not sure about other STD's, but it probably depends on where a breakout is or if the condom breaks.

Well, some testing methods do include getting a fluid sample via shoving a cotton swab up the penis, probably best described as a male pap smear. But you can be checked by blood also, so you have a choice between having a stick shoved up your dick or into your arm.

There might be other ways of getting tested but I don't know of them.

Insensitive bitch mode...

Honey, if you aren't brave enough to get yourself tested, you shouldn't be having sex. If you don't care about yourself, at least have some simple courtesy and respect for your future partners.

Not all STDs are visibile, Chlymidia (or however it's spelled, is not visible, but it is contagious, and can cause infertility in both sexes) HIV isn't visible, and that doesn't ahve a really happy ending.

You'll pull out? That's your method of birth control? That's the quickest way to an accident from happening.

Go get yourself condoms, now, and go get yourself tested, now.

What Mal said. You're risking pregnancy in your partner and various diseases. Are you old enough to buy condoms? I don't know if there's an age limit.

Temporary_User 09-14-2004 12:12 PM

Yeah, Im going to get tested.
Its not like im a huge player, but its better to be safe than sorry.
And I can buy condoms, but sometimes they just arent around and you dont realize that until....

maleficent 09-14-2004 12:21 PM

If they aren't around -- then you don't have sex... This is your life and your future that you are ... fucking around -- (pun intended? ) with...

MageB420666 09-14-2004 12:52 PM

Use a condom. Sometimes the "visible" diseases aren't so visible. Women can have breakouts in the vagina that you aren't going to see, and guys can have a disease that just looks like a little bit of dark skin that feels hard. It's much better safe than sorry.

Oh, yeah, and remember your not just having sex with that person, your having sex with every person that person has been with and so on.

You don't have to be "like a huge player" to fuck the rest of your life, and possibly someone else's life. You are old enough to have sex, so you are old enough to be responsible with it. Unless you have just one committed partner and she is on a form of contraceptive is it ok to have unprotected sex. Don't be a statistic my friend.

getting a q-tip shoved up there isnt too bad... ive been tested...
its not a normal sized q-tip... its a lot skinnier and the cotton bit on the end isnt very big... and they only stick like a centimeter in... twist it and then pull it out...
its really not even painful... more like severely uncomfortable...

i figured ive had a few partners... no reason to think i had one just am in a pretty big lull in sexual activity so why not... its free from the school

I recently got tested, for my sake, and the sake of the new SO, and it's not bad at all. Went to the local health department, they offer the basic chlamydia, gonarrhea and such testing for $20, and HIV for another $30, (hepatitis B an D another $30 for each). Got my results back and am negative for everything, so is she! One less thing to worry about and the sex just got that much wilder and crazier after we got our results back!
