Seriously, if you're looking for "proven methods" go check your Spam. Otherwise, be well-groomed, polite, reasonably interesting, and you should have no problem meeting compatible women. "Getting" them is another story and depends on far too many variables for anybody to provide you generic advice.

"be well groomed," YES. I've found that the first impression is a great tool. Have a friend, who's a girl, pick out your shoes, watch, belt, and sunglasses. Trust me. 90% of guys out there are better off asking someone else. Cut your fingernails and toenails and keep them trim and smooth (do not bit your fingernails, it makes you seem like a little kid). Put some lotion on your hands if you have dry skin. Wash your face upon waking, after a workout, and before bed. Brush your teeth. Don't pick your nose. It always surprises me how many people do that, ugh.
I know this all sounds pretty simple and you probably do all of that, but it's good to go over the basics.
Smile. Most women have a great smile, so I'd assume that most guys do. Salior is right, go talk to women, or girls depending on your age. It's nothing to worry about. You won't crap your pants or throw up on them. If your really worried about that, pick up on girls in the bathroom line. Be funny, and try not to laught really loud.
Everyone has gone through this at one time or another in their life, either in early high school, or after divorce in your 30's. Know going into it that a lot of the women feel the same fears.

Don't get too mushy with girls untill you're already in a relationship
Appear very confident yet somewhat friendly
Don't buy too many gifts (for bullshit reasons especially)
Don't give too many compliments (law of deminishing returns applies with excessive compliments)
Don't agree with absolutely everything she says, guys will try to create similarity with girls through agreeing all the time, but when the girls sense that they will tell you some ridiculous bullshit that they don't even believe and see if you agree

I was talking with my friend a few days ago and we were talking about a guy who she liked, and he liked her too, but he ruined it by being a clueless wimp- bought stupid gifts for no reason, paid too many compliments, agreed way too much, got touchy feely way too early. He was attractive and had enough brains, but just didn't know how to behave and turned her off.

Don't obsess over ANY girl. It's extremely eaaasssyyy to become attracted to a girl with whom you already KNOW for very logical reasons you'll never have a good relationship with.

That's just like a tiny shard of all the stuff you need to know to be GENERALLY successful with girls or women.

To attract any female subject you have to create a tailor-made seducing experience just for them, and frankly most of the time it's just not worth the time or energy spent.

The best way to find girls is to figure out who you are and go where you'll be in demand. e.g., I was a geeky natural academic, so I found that grad school was a great place.

Oh, and... work out. Take care of appearances. First impressions matter a LOT.
