Lost the condom...inside her

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything like this so if somebody's already asked I apologize. Here's the situation, my gf is on the pill but had to start taking some antibiotics for an infection. We decided to start using a condom because we've heard that antibiotics can affect the birth control and cause it not to work. To make a long story short, we were having sex the other night, and the condom came off inside her before i came. We're both really worried at this point. Is that true about antibiotics affecting birth control and what are the chances of gettin pregnant if the condom came off inside her?

Re: Lost the condom...inside her

Well...this is really based on chance. You said you've "heard" that the antibiotics "can" affect birth control. Where did you hear this? Was it a reliable source? Did it give statistics, reasons, or studies as references?
If you don't know about any of this, you should definately look it up and ask your/her doctor if the antibiotic will affect the birth control (and if the doctor says it "might", ask her what the chances are).

Then you said "the condom came off inside her before I came". Well....did you come inside her after the condom came off or did you pull out? While there *are* fluids released into the condom before you come, there's a much smaller chance of her becoming pregnant if you pulled out once you realized what happened. Additionally, if you used a condom or lubricant that had spermicide on it, there's a chance that the fluids in the condom were killed off when you lost the condom. The chances of it killing everything, though, are much less likely if you didn't pull out.

Do you notice a trend here? "Chance", "Might", "Maybe", "If". There is no clear-cut answer. The best thing to do is wait a few weeks, see if she gets her period, and if it's late, get her a pregnancy test.

And while you wait, it's good to call up your doctor and ask about the drugs mixing. Oh yeah...and I hope you got that condom out. Because if it's still in there, you might want to do something about that too

I wouldn't wait. I would go to the doctor immediately, 1 for emergecny contraception, 2. to have the condom removed.

Studies have shown that certain antibiotics can render birth control pills ineffective (there's a thread in the Ladies Lounge that addresses this issue - and gives you stats and such)

But for now, run, don't walk to the nearest clinic for emergency contraception.

You said that the condom came off prior to ejaculation, and that makes you safer than most. But maleficent is correct, certain antibiotics have been proven to interfere with the hormones which prevent ovulation (which is what the pill does). Your girlfriend's doctor probably told her that her birth control may be rendered ineffective by the antibiotics when they were prescribed.

Whether or not there would be a risk of pregnancy would depend entirely on what part of the ovulation cycle your girlfriend is in, but as was said, emergency contraception is the smartest idea at this point. No need to tempt those odds.

Thanx for all the info everybody, and 'specially for that link to drugs.com icksters. I went and checked out there on the drug interactions page for the birth control and antibiotic. From the sound of it, an interaction is pretty rare, but they haven't done a solid study with this antibiotic to prove or disprove it either way.

I did come inside her, but we were using a condom with spermicide. I realize that's not near 100% effective when it comes to killing off sperm but I'm sure it helped. My gf only has about a week and a half until she starts her period, so I'll know whether to get that pregnancy test before too much longer here.

Do not wait a week and a half. Just as maleficent suggested, get the emergency contraception!

(side thought: if the antibiotic interacts with the pill, wouldn't the emergency contraception do the same?)

Regardless, seek the counsel of planned parenthood. Unless you like the idea of being called Dad.

I read the topic title and thought you actually lost the condom inside of her, and couldn't find it.

But yeah, she should go to the doctor's office and get some sort of emergency contraception.
