Hello! If she says hi back ask her how her day is going or how she is? Make a little bit more small talk, ask her name, and then try and find something in common. When parting say something to the effect of "It was great meeting you, do you think we could continue this over coffee sometime?"

If you're younger (I am assuming here) you might ask her to go to the current sports game with you (while in school).

Eh..."Hello" usually isn't the best opener. If you see a girl every day/every week, it's good to make a point of saying "Hi" everytime you see her...but let's say you get in the elevator with a girl you've never seen before (and might not ever see again). You don't have much time (only till one of you gets out of the elevator). Instead of wasting time with "hello," which can only go so far (one person says hello, the other person responds and then you just stand around not talking), open with a witty comment about something you have just seen/heard together...or comment on her book/clothing/bag. Anything that can get a laugh, a smile, or a response longer than one word is good.
This applies for other stuff too. It doesn't have to be just an elevator discussion. If you're at one of those school basketball games and you see that girl you've had your eye on, go up to her and start talking about the game with her. Teasing her a little is fine too, as long as you're not bringing up touchy subjects. For example, if you tease her about liking the team that's going to lose, it might get a good natured laugh, smirk or jest. It could even turn into an opener for the next time you see her. However, if you tease her about being fat because she so obviously is not...you could just get an evil glare and lose all your chances with her.

Anyway...yeah...keep her talking. If you say something that leaves you both standing in an akward silence, change the subject. Hell, even if it was her that left you an an akward silence, she might be standing there thinking what an idiot she is. Change her mind by mentioning something else and showing her you're still interested.
Oh...and it's best to leave her when you're still rolling. If you're standing there for 30 seconds in an akward silence and then you're like "uhh....okay, I'm going to go now....", she won't be left with the best impression. If, on the other hand, you tell her you have to run while she's still laughing at a joke you made, her impression will be much better.

Good points made Trisk. Usually I say Hi and then make a witty (well, what I think is witty) comment about something to get her attention.

All great advice so far. Just speak with the confidence and comfort that you would with a person you already know. You want to leave her feeling like you are someone she would like to speak to again, not someone who makes her feel uncomfortable and awkward. Keep it short and simple.

Um... ice pick if you're old fashioned. They have machines for it now if you don't want to get sweaty. You'll find that the farther north you go, the more girls will expect from you in your ice-breakin' skills because they have more exposure to ice and know a good ice-breaker when they see one. The main thing is to be confident - I know how to break that ice, and dagnabbit, I'm gonna break it in a blaze of glory. You own that ice, and it will be yours.

Confidence... those women, theyre like dogs, they can smell your fear. So, just act natural and be confident. The right words have always just fallen into place for me

I'm in agreement with the others. Saying hi works wonders. It also helps when the girl breaks the ice with you like my wife did to me. She made the first move. The rest is history.

While saying "Hi, Hello, Howdy(depending on where you live and what you're most comfortable with), are usually good conversation starters, every situation will be different and should be treated as such.

If someone looks at you eye to eye, "I've always found the simple "Hi, Hello, or Howdy" to work wonders. When they don't look you in the eyes that's when you have to get witty and creative.

As someone has already stated, when you speak speak with confidence but let me also add don't be cocky. Something else, don't ask to many obvious questions such as "so do you work here?" Obviously if she's wearing a wal-mart vest with her name on it and she's at the register checking you out, asking her "So you work here at wal-mart?" she'll probably look at you in a "What was your first clue, Einstein?!" kind of way...... You can however ask something like "Giselle, you've got a beautiful name." Or if they act like they've had a long day just say something like "Do you need me to buy you a drink/coke/coffee after work?" in a non-threatening type of way.

Anyway, my point is that different situations call for different responses.

Hope that helped you.

Ask her how much a penguin weighs.

In my opinion, the best way to break the ice is to be relaxed yourself, try not to have second thoughts on your actions at that moment in time...hope this helped too

It's all about eye contact.

Tell me, what do you think of a person who won't look you in the eye? You think their either hiding something or very timid. When trying to pick up a girl, you don't want to be either of these.

1. Look her in the eye. Notice I don't say eyes, you can only look at one eye at a time. No switching back and forth, it'll make you look unconfident.

2. Say "hi" with a simple smile.

3. Wait for her "hi".

4. Initaite conversation. This can be about anything. If you're meeting her somewhere you have something in common because of your location. At the libraury, ask her about the books she has or is looking for, Grocery store ask her what she's picking up, Gym, how often she works out... you get the idea.

5. Don't let go of her eye and your smile untill the conversation is over.

6. Ask for either a venu change (ex. let's continue our conversation at xxxxx) or say something like "I have to go, but would like to keep talking to you sometime". She'll either give you her number, suggest a date, or ignore you.

its easy to say these things on here, but really unless you have mastered the art of talking about nothing, then you are probably gonna appear nervous, which alot of girls dislike. When you're having a conversation with a chick you've just met, dont worry about what you're gonna say next, it'll come naturally if you are relaxed, and confident.

dont be worried about making yourself look like an ass, because if you do then you will never see her again in your life so it wont matter.
