Umfriends

It just was pointed out to me that the term "umfriend" isn't really in common parlance. I thought everybody knew what that meant!

You know, "umfriend"! The kind of person that, when you introduce them to somebody, you say, "And this is my... um... friend...".

It means you're having a sort of relationship with them but it's not real official, it almost doesn't quite count (or doesn't yet count) as relationship. "Boyfriend" or "girlfriend" wouldn't be appropriate. "Sex partner" is too clinical. "Lover" is too cheesy. What you're left with is "Umfriend".

Have YOU heard the term "umfriend" before? If not, what do YOU call such a relationship?

Averett 06-24-2004 09:27 AM

I've never heard that one before!

But well.. I have an... um... friend :o

amonkie 06-24-2004 09:39 AM

A new word for the day!

I know several people who have fall victim to this scenario

dabossy2k 06-24-2004 10:05 AM

I've had a few of those but only when your not sure what to introduce this person as. Sometimes you just don't know so you call them your um friend. But that normally gets you in trouble.

losthellhound 06-24-2004 10:16 AM

hey, umfriend.. I like it

I have an umfriend..

:)

Nitrox 06-24-2004 10:17 AM

I remember using that one time when an old girlfriend walked into my apartment when I was entertaining a new prospect. That description did not bode well for me at the time...

the_marq 06-24-2004 10:17 AM

I have had fuckbuddies, but I never called them that.

maleficent 06-24-2004 11:20 AM

Funny, I've always used that term, but then again, I have been told I speak my own language occassionally.

Umfriend is very appropriate for the first several months of a relationship, when it's really not a relationship yet, but it's more than just screwing.

Friend is too generic, Boyfriend is too familiar - Umfriend is just perfect.

Bill O'Rights 06-24-2004 11:38 AM

Actually...the first time that I ever heard it used...was by you, rat. I do, however, think that it conveys so much more than just "fuckbuddy". It definately has a place in the vernacular.

Like you're going to introduce your parents to somebody using that :p

"Mom, Dad.. I'd like you to meet ______. We've been fuckin and all that, but he's not exactly my boyfriend." That'd go over well

Hmmm, there's this family party I have to go to this weekend, I think I'll borrow a guy and use that line. It's be much fun to torture my mother with that comment.

pig 06-24-2004 01:22 PM

I've never heard the term, but I like it. I've always been stuck with having to straight face it (it's the umm...that gets me in trouble. I've never had a girl angry at the term friend, but only at the hesitation that tells the world that we're doing the baby-making practice, but that she's not worthy of a higher designation. How dare I publicly assail her honor? Even is she's an unabashed militant slut...) or else just skip it and give the girl's name. I assume that this is a term that you use behind the umfriend's back? I can't imagine it as a practical introduction...

ratbastid 06-24-2004 01:31 PM

Yeah, you can't really introduce them as your umfriend without having the jig be up. But at least the jig is up with a wink, you know? You're saying that you know that you just let everybody know...

la petite moi 06-24-2004 03:23 PM

Usually an 'umfriend' can be referred to as an f-buddy or fling.

I know what you mean. The look in an ex's eyes the second you start to say 'um...' is terrifying.
I've never heard 'umfriend' used as a description for that kind of relationship, but I like it, especially since I've introduced girls as my... um... friend.

There's a difference between a fuck buddy and an umfriend. An umfriend may eventually be promoted to full boyfriend/girlfriend status. A fuck buddy is just that, a buddy that you fuck, nothing more.

World's King 06-24-2004 03:45 PM

I never heard that before.

But now that I think about it I've had a few "Umfrends"

Unga 06-24-2004 05:02 PM

I've never heard it before either

I've had a couple umfriends too.
haha its kinda a funny word :)

SpikeQX99 06-24-2004 05:21 PM

I want to be someone's Umfriend...

that'd be cool..

DelayedReaction 06-24-2004 07:00 PM

Perfect term for it. I've also used "primary action item" (think Fight Club) to describe someone I was dating.

Sleepyjack 06-24-2004 08:19 PM

Hah! good job ratbastid
We need to submit this definition to Webster's or some other popular dictionary :)

Same here, although it may have been lurkette in a thread about your umfriends you (used to?) play with.

Good word though. It's a little transparent for anything less than casual use, but good.

Lucky fucker.

oblar 06-24-2004 10:40 PM

nice use of the term; however, I have said umfriend when mainly introducing someone I don't consider myself to be really friends with, but more of an acquaintance. This is usually because I find my definition of a friend is usually a little more strict and requires more than most people so whom I consider to be acquaintances oftentimes consider me their friends.. So when introducing I say ....um...friend. Or just leave out all things and just say there name :)

I do like it in this context though.. very appropriate, i just wish I had an umfriend right now :(

Still do. In fact, we're meeting her parents over the 4th of July weekend, and I fully expect to be introduced as an... um... friend.

todd 06-26-2004 08:40 PM

Good word.
I had one till a couple weeks ago.

oberon 06-26-2004 11:23 PM

I think I usually refer to those as "fuck buddies" or "friends with benefits" or just "friends". ;)

impulse03 06-27-2004 08:41 PM

i used to use "umfriend" with family and family friends and all at parties.

i was a pretty shy dude in highschool and my first few gf's never really got introduced as my "girlfriend" but rather my "umfriend."

nofnway 06-27-2004 09:44 PM
