New pill by prescription in the US: women will have only 4 periods per year

It's a birth control pill called s. . . can't remember.
This sounds sort of freaky to me.
Some women say they don't really mind their period, but others seem to go crazy during their period.
I just think there will be reprecussions for changing your body's natural naturalness. Heh.

don't fuck with mother nature, she's a bitch...

As much as i hate it, i couldn't imagine life without, just because if it disappeared but for four times a year, i would find myself constantly wondering if i was knocked up (i'm paranoid like that)... Dunno, just not my bag.

lurkette's been on a pill like this for more than a year and it's GREAT.

If you think about it, in pre-Birth Control days, a sexually active woman would be pregnant a fair amount of the time. The going theory is that women these days are having way MORE periods than are really natural and healthy. I confess, it sounded very strange to me when her Gyno first told her about it, but hey--if Aunt Flow stays away for a few months at a time, I'm not complaining!

Now that makes entirely too much sense. Wonder why I never thought of that (particularly with history as a hobby of mine. Prob'ly because there are so few female historians.)

My wife is on this, and it's great. Not only can we still control when her period comes, but it only happens 4 times per year on top of that! For the life that we lead, it doesn't get much better.

ratbastid - that's what I've heard in more than one source and from my Dr also.
I been taking this pill for over 3/4 of a year now. My clinic had just received their first starter packs the day before my apt.

Some Dr's are even going to the point of giving the pills constantly and stopping all periods. My Dr prefers the Seasonale method. The longer you go between periods the thicker the lining on the uterus becomes. So far they've not found any adverse effects of a thicker uterine lining. Except that when the time comes that the woman would WANT to become pregnant it can be more difficult - and when she does quit the pill and allows herself a period it will be much longer because of the accumulation of lining. The pills does slow that accumulation though so it's not too bad.

There are several reasons the Dr gave me the Seasonale pill. #1. I get Migranes EVERY time I get my period and I have to take Maxalt which works my raising my blood pressure up to 10 points. With my blood pressure being low it's not a big deal for now. But the migranes are a big deal. #2. I run just on the edge of anemia all the time and have to take Iron suppliments. When I have my period it dropps my hemoglobin to the point that if we can't get it back up in a reasonable amount of time I've been "threatened" with hospitalization. I do eat plenty of red meats and dark green vegetables - the reason for my anemia - unknown - except I don't seem to assimilate Iron as well as I should.

Because of those things and because of our lifestyle as well we are thrilled with this pill.

When it comes to pregnancy - I know what I felt like before about the time I missed my first period. I had already noticed some constant nausea and breast tenderness. I just knew. I rarely get scared anymore even if I miss my period for real because I know there are so many other changes in your body within just a month of conception. It's not a big worry for me.

I haven't had a period in over two years. My gyno assures me it's absolutely safe. your SO should go for it :)

Four is better than twelve if you ask me, but none is better than four :)

I'm not sure what hormones are in the seasonale pill, but I'm on just plain old ortho cyclin, and have been doing this for a few years on the advice of my ob-gyn. I do worry occasionally about being preggers and not knowing it for 3-4 months, but frankly, I think I'd start to notice earlier than that, pill or no pill. There's some research that having more periods than was normal in pre-birth-control times (when most women were pregnant most of the time and had maybe 1 period/year) might be behind some increases in cancer rates, so decreasing periods is not unnatural at all, it's just balancing things back out again. I find that my periods are less painful than they used to be, and I sure don't mind waiting 3-4 months between them. Hoowah!

There isn't anything new with the pill. Just a diffrent way of takeing the stuff thats been out allready.

Nope. Five days, just like usual.

To not have one day of hormone hell every month would be pure bliss but I love the BC I am currently taking because it has no side effects.

Can anyone tell me if they have had any side effects with this new pill?

If you're on a pill that has a constant hormone dose (one where every week is the same pill, not one where the pills change doses and colors every week) you can just stay on that same pill and skip the week of placebo pills. That's what my doctor had me do. The side effects are no different taking it constantly than they were taking it for three weeks and then having a period.

That is how my Dr had me doing things for over a year before we switched to the Seasonale. The difference with Seasonale is that you get 2 extra weeks of pills before your period versus if you went through 3 packs, skipping the placebo pills.

The dosage in Seasonale is 0.15mg levonorgetrel/ 0.03 Ethinyl estradiol.

The estrogen is much lower than other pills I've used and I have much less intense headaches when I do go off. Partly it's the drop in estrogen that causes my headaches.

If I was going to have my period every other month I'd just go to POP pills. They mess with my system less than the estrogen/progesteron pills. Also the incidence of problems because of estrogen in the pills is absent because they ONLY have Progesterone.

I have a friend who just got put on this pill. She really couldn't be happier.

ariekitten 06-22-2004 11:53 PM

man i think this is the kinda pill i need to be on. my periods have been bad, and i notice i get more migraines around the time of my period. i also get way more irritable as i found out tonite.....

but i would be paranoid about the pregnancy thing....some women can be pregnant for a month or more and not know it (i know someone who was pregnant for over a month and didnt know it)....the only thing to worry about in that instance is if you're pregnant and still taking the pill, it can really harm your baby. but yeah that pill sounds great. i am actually out of BC right now (bad me) and will go to the dr and ask about this new pill, maybe they will give it to me. :)

oh btw, anyone have an estimate of how much it costs without medical insurance?

raeanna74 06-23-2004 04:14 AM

I believe it's $130 a month - according to the receipt I get. I have insurance so I don't pay that. My old pills were about $30/mo. This is a little more but it's for just over 3 months (3 of the usual cycles and 2 extra weeks). If you figure it that way the difference is only by about $10 a month.

I like my pills (Desogen) they do the job.

I used to get very sick during my periods; horrible cramps, clammy pale skin and passing out occasionally. Once I was taken out of my non-western philosophy class by ambulence and rushed to the ER because my period Fk'd me over. I was put on Desogen and now I barely have a cramp during my period...thank god for the pill!
