Eyes Wide Shut
Wondering what others thoughts are on this.
In 'Eyes Wide Shut', Nicole Kidmans character relates to Tom Cruise the story of a man that she sees and is instantly infatuated with. So much so, that she feels that she would give up everything she has (husband, family, wealth) just to be with him. Gets me to thinking if it is even possible for this to happen without talking with the person or even knowing anything about them. I guess it's hard to determine if its possible unless it actually happens (but if it never happens, how do you know it's possible - it's like the tree in the forest query). I would have to say that, for me, it is not realistic because I really have to know a person, it's more than just looks. Sure, I'll see someone and be interested, but never enough to throw everything away on that basis alone.

Anything is possible, but it's a fantasy that the person becomes infatuated with. Fantasy rarely lives up to reality. Some people can keep the fantasy up for a lot longer than others can.

yeah, i think i'd be too aware of all the things i'd be losing to be willing to give everything up for a fantasy like that. plus, i don't really feel like there would be anything lacking with Xirax that i would need to find elsewhere...

The thing about fantasy, is you can get so caught up in it and because it is exactly that, a fantasy, there's no warning signs to say "stop, slow down" or anything like that. Fantasy's are a dangerous thing sometimes if not controlled. I'm just thankful i can keep a handle on my imagination when i get going.

Of course it's possible. People feel all sorts of weird ways from time to time. I know I have.
The point of that movie is that fantasy takes us out of any sort of appreciation for what we have, and is ultimately at the source of being unfulfilled and frustrated in life. At least, that's what I got out of it. The Tom Cruise character is definitely in a high state of frustration for most of the film. |
