Is there a stigma with being single?

Do you feel a stigma exists for single people in regards to sexuality?

Not the same degree of a stigma that exists for sexual criminals, but still a stigma?

I got this idea from this thread, the Sex Positive Thread : http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=54830

I'm sure many of you have heard the term "Spinster" and at least have a vague idea what it means. "Virgin" is a dirty word, to those of you still in high school. "Dirty Old Man" is a term which many have heard.

If not those, you've sure heard the terms "lonely" and "desperate" to describe people.

On a subconcious level, do you think people desexualize a person when they find out someone is single? Do they suddenly become a 'pervert' instead of 'sexually healthy'?

If you feel there is a stigma, do you believe it is worse for males or females?

Yes there is. And it's much worse for females.

A single unmarried man is a Bachelor. A single unmarried woman is an Old Maid.

Stupid social stigmas

I think there is some kind of stigma I guess. I makes sense when you think of the fact (and yes, a fact, cause it's true ) that it's easier to find girls that are interested in you when you are in a relationship than when you are single. It's probably just a subconscious thing....a feeling of, "He's been in a long relationship...he must be a good guy" and that make the guy more attractive.

Whenever I tell someone that I am single, they automatically assume that I am looking.

Whats a fine chicken like me doing in a place like this?

No stigma, isn't everyone a pervert?

Being alone sometimes leaves you alot of free time on your hands and too much time alone could give you too much time to become perverted in the first place, Most single men are lonely and horny.Period.I assume that after a substancial amount of time alone(getting perverted) they'd be brushing up against people on the subway for realease...But.. that's just me..Speaking of hands...I should wash mine.

I love the assumption that I am looking for anything just because I am single. I think I'm asexual or something, or perhaps I'm just a prude.

It depends on how you conduct yourself... the less you let things bother you, the less people will say things about it. I will agree, however, that this is much more true for men. Our culture still holds to the idea that women don't have much of an identity unless they are in a relationship.

I always suggest to everyone that they try to spend some time alone to get to know themselves before going into something like a relationship. Otherwise you cannot know if what you're doing is really the best thing for you.

I've recently noticed that doing anything that is contrary to social norms with confidence as though everyone should be like that tends to stop people from questioning it. Usually, however, I think most people that are single are viewed as desperate and dislike their virginity because it makes them feel unwanted and they really do want to be wanted.

We don't live in a very loving culture, and deep down people want to be loved. Problems will always arise because of this.

I agree with you on that one... If you're a guy and you're single, women tend not to show any interest. But as soon as you get into a long-term committed relationship then they take interest in you.
