Antibiotics and Birth Control
 

I am currently taking birth control pills and finished taking amoxicillin 2 weeks ago and was wondering if anyone knew how long I would need to continue using a back up method after finishing the dose.

From what remember you are supposed to use backup for the remainder of your pack of pills. Unless you are usings Seasonale or some other extended cycle kind of pack. Then I believe it's something around 2-3 weeks. I would suggest calling your Dr's office and asking to speak to a triage nurse. They should be able to answer your question. Even if they don't know they can leave a message for your Dr and he/she will just call you back with an answer soon.

You should use another form of birth control for the rest of this cycle. Next cycle you should be fine.

Sure, this response was from 2 years ago, but I'll thank you now anyways :) . My wife just picked up strep throat and an Rx for antibiotics, and we had *almost* transitioned back to the pill (she's taking the week of blanks right now). Looks like another month of condoms ahead for us, I'll live.

Ok from what I've read on this there has been NO known case of antibiotics causing a unwanted pregnancy. Theoretically some AB's can interfere with the pill but again, its never been proven. On the other hand the thought of a lawsuit where you have to pay for the kid for the rest of its life due to a BC failure brought on by a prescribed antibiotic is enough for your doctor to tell you about the risk

Most doctors and pharmacists, in the interest of precaution, will tell you to use a backup method until the end of that cycle, or 7 days, if your cycle ends before 7 days is up. For those on the 21-day cycle (which does not include the 7 days of placebos at the end), they generally just say 7 days from when you stop the antibiotic. We get this question in the pharmacy all the time, and that's what every pharmacist i've ever worked under had advised of their patients.

Regardless of the small chance, there's just no point in telling someone to go ahead and get freaky when a simple precaution could be taken for a few weeks. As annoying as it may be, it won't kill anyone to have to wear a condom for 2 weeks or so during sex, especially when it's for the reason of preventing pregnancy.

Yeah, I'd seen the end+7 days information when I was Googling before I tried TFP, and I didn't see the logic behind it. I mean, there's only a few days within a cycle where the woman is actually fertile. I figured that if the antibiotics and pills fight it out, things are messed up for the rest of that cycle. But, I'm not a biologist.

She'll be 6 days into the next set of pills when the antibiotics end, so which case does that fall into?

I had always understood it to be that a woman is only MOST fertile during those few days, but is able to become pregnant at any point during her cycle.

Yeah, you can become pregnant at any time. I got pregnant on the first day of my period.
