Dating a Dentist
Well, she's a Dental Hygienist.
Is there any wierd things I should watch out for like her always looking at my mouth when I talk instead of my eyes? Just a little advice would help. Needless to say we've been dating a week or so and I'm starting to get really paranoid about my teeth. She's got me brushing twice a day... up from my once a day. It's all well and good but she keeps trying to get me to come in and get my teeth cleaned. Should I do it? Either way... advice is welcomed.

well she seems to be offering good advice you really should be brushing more than once a day. Then again i was raised in a house of dentists so what do i know?
back to topic if she's a dental hygenist she'd probably be the one cleaning your teeth so be prepared for that but i'd get em cleaned if you already havent this year or you have really yellow teeth from something(like smoking). after that though i wouldn't worry about it. you dont need to whiten or cap them is what i'm saying just don't go near her with an oreo crusted mouth. She has to see that crap all day and it makes her job stressful she probably doesn't want to see it in her leisure time. |

Oh my- what does it really matter if you like her? You aren't too look for the downside of things, or bad things, but the cool, fun, special, nice things about that person. If you keep looking for the wrong in someone, you will never be happy with anyone. Just go with the flow and take it one day at a time, trusting your feelings.

I know your fear king
Not to long ago I went to a dentist to have a wisdom tooth out. He took me on an emergency basis and I had never been there before. Well turns out he was the only one in the office when he pulled my tooth while everyone else was at lunch. Afterwards I was to woozy to drive and had to sit in the waiting room. Well he sits out there with me and ends up asking me out. It was really strange bc he just pulled my tooth. I had to tell him no even though I was really flattered bc he was attractive and a DENTIST. But all I could do was imagine him pulling my tooth and that killed it. |

Just a hunch on my part, it probably would not be wise to rent "Marathon Man" as a date night movie

As a fellow conniseur of the sweet, sweet cigarettes, I'd say she's probably got good reason to recommend a good tooth cleanin'.
However, unless you've got rotting, corn-kernel-looking teeth, I'd say don't worry about her constantly staring at your teeth. On a side note, I'm kinda glad to see that I'm not the only person that followed the "brush once a day" plan...

It's ok to brush once a day, although you should be doing it for about 5 minutes or so. It's the mechanical process of breaking down all the shit off of your teeth. Nothing to do with fancy pastes and whitening, bleaching or other fancy name agent, really. Although i am not a dentist or anything, so i could be right

King: I wouldn't worry. She's not obsessed. She's just seen too many people with really screwed-up teeth who'd have been okay if they'd just taken a few simple precautions. Kind of like dating a fireman (or -woman) and having them freak out over the fact that you've got 17 different appliances plugged into one plug plate through multiple adapters, a long-haired cat who likes to walk on the stovetop, and burnmarks in the sofa from where you stub out your cigarettes. She can't in good consciences _not_ say these things.
About teeth-cleaning: among other things, it keeps your gums from getting infected and receding, which they'll start to do in your 20s if you don't watch it. Receding/infected gums means gum surgery -- at the very least -- down the line. Aside from the fact that you really don't want that -- believe me -- you may not have good insurance when the time comes. Teeth cleaning can prevent that; it's cheap even if you don't have insurance, and if you're lucky you can find a dental hygienist school (most cities have them, in community colleges) where you can get it done free. I can't help remembering a Steven Wright bit...
"I like my dental hygenist. She's very cute. Whenever I get my teeth cleaned I eat an entire box of oreo cookies in the waiting room." Congrats on finding a nice lady. I'd go ahead and make an appointment. It'll be good for your teeth and might be fun to see her work.

I am married to a dentist.
When she was still a student, she did a filling on me. She had this pitiful look on her face the entire time, because she didn't want to hurt me. My wife doesn't like to "talk shop" outside of work. When people first meet her, they are embarrassed about their teeth, but she doesn't notice. I helped her study through university, so I notice peoples teeth. |

She's concerned about your health.. I'd say that's a good sign.. She could be reccomending a delightful hemlock tea or something.... If the idea of her cleaning your teeth makes you uncomfortable, tell her that you'll get it done, but that it might make you embarrassed for her to find a cavity or something, and that you want to get them perfect before she looks that closely.. SHe'll probably tell you that it's silly, but appreciate the honesty.
