Girls, I need clothing advice! Help me pick a shirt to look attractive in!

Ok, on Friday, I am going out with some friends from work for a big birthday drinks thing... and I have been entertaining the possibility of trying to maybe pick up a girl or get some numbers, or something.

But the question, which shirt?

The guys I work work with basically ridicule my taste in clothing :(

I normally just wear NY Jets jerseys (the crappy cheap ones you get on ebay), but I am willing to make an effort

I went shopping with two girls from work the week before, and they picked out this shirt for me from a menswear shop, but it is too tight! I told them it was, but they said it looked ok, but I can like feel my belly against the buttons, I just dont feel comfortable wearing something I can feel against me like that!

Anyway,

Option 1 - a sweet Spiderman button up shirt, it has a Spiderman image on the back, and like a web pattern and Spiderman flying through the air shooting a web out of his wrist on the front

Option 2 - a cool Hulk shirt, it is grey, and it has a huge image of the Hulk, all green and angry, charging forwards in the front

Option 3 - a really cool Sage Francis shirt that says "Natalie Portman has a stalker" on the front

Option 4 - a IDF tee shirt (Israeli Defence Force)

Option 5 - a shirt that says "Kosher" on the front in big letters, in English and in Hebrew

Option 6 - just a plain workshirt without a tie, which fits fine, but basically will look like I havent changed from work

Option 7 - just wear a Jets jersey, or plain tee shirt

Option 8 - a cool Donnie Darko tee shirt I have, which is red, and on the back is the countdown ie (28:6:42:12) on the back, and "why are you wearing that stupid man suit" on the front

Option 9 - this shirt

But I seriously think it is too small!

Which would you pick as something that you might look kindly on the approach of a guy if you saw him in it?

the girls I have spoken to at work say that all my clothes would make them think, if they didnt know me, "oh dear" - but dont any girls think Spiderman or Slogan tee shirts are cool on a 26 year old???

MooseMan3000 02-04-2004 02:10 PM

Depends on your definition of "cool."

I realize I'm not a girl, but I thought I might be able to contribute a little bit...

Personally, I don't like shirts with writing on them in general, as far as what I find initially attractive. Since you're "entertaining the possibility of trying to maybe pick up a girl," I would assume you're looking for a "first impression" kind of shirt. That said, here is what I find gets the best results:

A button down shirt. Something somewhat classy, but relaxed enough to be comfortable. You want to look nice, but you also need to be relaxed in it. Personally, I go for solid, cool colors: black, dark blue, a deep red (if I'm feeling sassy =P ), or something of the sort.

That's just me, though. Ultimately, what you should wear is something that you feel comfortable in, something that compliments your style. You also probably want to consider where you're going out. If you're going to a dance club, a Hulk shirt PROBABLY wouldn't be the best choice. Similarly, if you're going to a video arcade, I probably wouldn't wear a 3 piece suit.

Oh, and shirts get extra points if the girls think it looks good on you. Chances are they're right. I've learned to accept this fact =P

I hope this was helpful.

/me looks down at my 1 size too small "I am an ocean of awesome" t-shirt

Hmmm, I do fine with my stupid shirts :p

Option 6 or 9.

Then again, I normally like the clean cut J. Crew type guys.

SabrinaFair 02-04-2004 02:42 PM

The shirt you linked to is lovely. You should wear that with some khakis and nice shoes...you'll be stunning.

Wordy t-shirts are fine for every day, but not for dates. I mean, most guys I know would be disappointed if their lady fair showed up in jeans and a t-shirt. Maybe you wouldn't, and kudos to you if you don't care, but clothes help make an impression.

Strange Famous 02-04-2004 02:43 PM

Yeah, I guess I am looking for a first impression shirt.

But on the basis that I am 5 9 and 280 lbs, that first impression is prolly never going to be "oh, he looks nice"... Im just trying to make it so its not "oh dear" or "look at that fat bastard"

And it is probably going to be bars and a dance club to finish on the night.

Go with that shirt

Linked shirt works for me.

I don't much care for shirts with logos or writing on them.

Radio Monk33 02-04-2004 05:53 PM

Not a girl either...but how bout a compromise. i.e. a button up shirt but opened up with a cool tshirt underneath.

Shows that you're not trying too hard, but still classy. ;)

phlox 02-04-2004 06:07 PM

I like the too-tight, quirky t-shirt look on chubby guys. Jack Black and Phyllip Seymour Hoffman pull off this look well. PSH is delicious. Personally, I don't like the J-Crew model look, but it depends on the kind of girl you're looking for, I guess.

Golgothas 02-04-2004 06:08 PM

Not a female, but I think stripes are stylish.

Yep...I like that option :)

nukeu666 02-05-2004 03:21 AM

the linked shirt is cool
do not wear anyting with a cartoon(or any resembling it) like hulk/spiderman stuff!

phlox 02-05-2004 01:58 PM

why not?

02-05-2004 02:10 PM

IMHO- that last shirt with the image is an attractive-looking shirt. i want to see my husband wear more of that type.
Hey if it's too small, go find another one. Short-sleeved, maybe but same concept- collar, button-up, striped or plaid. Something subtle, yet more dressy than the average t-shirts that say things on them.

InTeGrA77 02-05-2004 03:50 PM

I'm a female, and I say wear Option #8 for sure!!;)

(tehe, look at my sig.)

onodrim 02-05-2004 08:44 PM

If you're wanting to make a good first impression, I would go with the linked shirt. It probably fits fine, you're just not used to the way it feels. Give it a chance. :) The tee shirts are fine for everyday, but if you're going out and looking to hook up, then you're gonna want a more polished look than the logo tee. That's my two cents.

6. Dress a little classy. And make sure its ironed, and you shouldnt look like you just got off work. Even if you do, who gives a shit? Most people look better dressed up to a degree anyways.

flamingdog 02-06-2004 07:16 AM

yup, just make yourself look exactly the same as everyone else.

perversely, i've got sucked into the next directory, and i'm thinking about a few new threads when the old bank balance responds to payday next week.

normally i don't go anywhere near next...

Mephisto2 02-06-2004 01:21 PM

Vertical stripes = cool
Blue = cool
Linked NEXT shirt = cool
Diesel "distressed" dark jeans (indigo/black) = cool
Seven jeans = cool

IDF t-shirt = NOT cool
Top button closed = NOT cool
Spiderman shirt = so NOT cool it's smoking (and not in a good way)
Anything Armani Exchange = NOT cool

World's King 02-06-2004 01:37 PM

Option 9.

I promise at least one number with that shirt.

majik_6 02-06-2004 02:00 PM

I'm a pretty big guy, so I can understand what you're saying about the tightness of the shirt, but if you're planning on hitting the bars with the hopes of numbers, then go with the linked blue shirt.

The whole dress shirt thing can take about 15-20 pounds (visually) off a guy, assuming it fits right. It shouldn't be baggy, but it shouldn't be pulling at the seams, either.

I know that I've had much more attention at the bars while wearing stuff like that, than my usual t-shirt/jeans thing.

But that's just me talking, so do what makes you comfortable, because you can be wearing the finest threads, but if you're as nervous as the proverbial street-walker in church, then you're not going to have good luck.

numberfive 02-06-2004 10:34 PM

I usually wear stripes (so much that some of my friends like to poke fun at it, especially when a few came over and saw my closet) so I'm a bit biased towards the linked one. But like someone said above, no logo tees and no cartoons. At least, not if you plan on getting numbers.

Good luck.

SVT01Cobra 02-07-2004 01:13 AM

Hey... I like armani exchange, what so bad about it? :hmm:

macmanmike6100 02-08-2004 10:20 PM

go with MooseMan's comment; comfortable, somewhat classy, no writing, and *listen to your female friends*
