How can you tell?

How can you tell if a girl is having her period without asking about it? Is there like specific types of clothing girls wear while on their period or anything? I have some girl friends who would laugh at my usual antics one day and then think it is totally disguisting another day...

numist 01-14-2004 02:40 PM

Not sure. If you know someone well enough you can usually tell just by watching them for a minute or so, because they do act differently when on the period.

Otherwise, I have no idea...

shannon 01-14-2004 02:57 PM

a lot of girls though, particularly older ones i find, have gotten used to their periods and don't tend to act differently. there's no sure fire way, but if you have any business knowing anyways you should be allowed to ask. mind you you may not have any business knowing, and i'm more liberal towards talking about sex related things than some girls.
the only thing i could think of is they're not as likely to wear white pants, but even that's not a sure bet.

Halx 01-14-2004 03:00 PM

Well if you have a girl tell you that sh'es having her period, pay attention to the time of month. Set your watch or something. This is in no way scientific, but I can usually make a good guess depending on that.

anti fishstick 01-14-2004 03:00 PM

yeah the only thing i can think of is tending to wear darker pants. but there's really no sure fire way to tell, unless you know a persons idiosyncrasies well enough to catch their shifting change in mood that means "period". i don't even know my own :P

Halx 01-14-2004 03:02 PM

Young girls will be more clingy and emotional as well.

absorbentishe 01-14-2004 03:03 PM

Look in the waste basket for clues? That's my best suggestion.

saleenobsessed 01-14-2004 03:10 PM

first off why do u want to know when shes having her period? like halx said girls get more clingy and emotional..AND EAT A LOT:)

Rodney 01-14-2004 03:21 PM

Watch for zits. A lot of women -- not all, but a lot -- pick up a couple of zits at that time of the month. If something else has changed as well -- like behavior -- it's probably that time. Especially telling on 20- 25+ year-old women who are no longer as prone to zits otherwise.

Thanks for all your repsonses. I want to know because then I will know what to do and what not to do on those days and not make them feel worse or anything.

 You might want to watch out with that comment. Seems like that could easily be taken the wrong way as something sexist.

I've found that the habits of my SO change such that's she much more sensative to the actions of others and how they make her feel. Things that would normaly never bother her begin to and she feels much more affecteed by the actions of those around her.
Every woman is different though, just as no two men are the same.
Instead of looking for a catch all answer perhaps you should pay attention to the girl that has inspired this question to better understand her moods and emotional actions normally so that a sudeen change will be more obvious to you.

Yalaynia 01-14-2004 04:13 PM

Well me being female I can tell you it really depends on the person. Some clues could be headache , cramps, going to the bathroom a little more then usual. Some woman would say something along the lines of I m not feeling well or I have a headache, and I dont mean that to get out of having sex, some might be quite alright with having sex during their period. Show a little suport and ask her if shes alright or if theres anything that you can do for her and who knows she might just come out and say ah its that time of month. Theres nothing wrong with having sex while a woman is on her period , it does depend on how shes feeling towards the idea, it might be or will be a little messy so as long as you dont care and she doesnt, us a condom and or have fun in the shower. I am open with my SO in telling him that I have started or I am close to starting. Theres nothing to be embarrassed about on either the male or female side. I m hoping that all men realize that its an everyday part of a females life.

feelgood 01-14-2004 07:56 PM

If you don't really have any issues of girls who's having a period and she does, she would tell you for sure. If she doesn't, then, obviously it won't be mentioned...

I'm assuming that you're talking about sex...

ApexgriN 01-14-2004 08:15 PM

Look for the Period Panties. The ones that look a bit more tired and not as girly. :)

You mean old ladies panty? ;)

moonstrucksoul 01-14-2004 09:56 PM

guess you just know when you are with them for long enough,
i can usually tell when my wife is about to start. and then there are times when i think she is about to start when she isn't.

Paq 01-14-2004 09:56 PM

haha, they just came out with the pad for thong wearers...that is funny to me bc i used to look for panty lines as a way of checking well beforehand.

Now, i can normally tell a change in teh way a girl smells, but this takes a while of getting to know them to tell when it changes. i'll normally confirm or ask if i don't know, then base the scent around that. also, a lot of women will start to wear a bit more perfume or will change what they normally wear.

if you're worried or wanna know, though, just ask. Most girls i've dated have been very open with their cycles and time of the month...I think it's bc they know i'll give more backrubs and massages around that time to try to keep them feeling good while they are bleeding...

oh, and one lesson learned from southpark..never trust something that bleeds for 7 days and doesn't die :) j/k

but seriously, just ask, every girl is different..

sillygirl 01-14-2004 10:05 PM

First of all, Halx, your avatar is gross. Poor kitties.....

Anyway, when I'm getting close to my period, I feel more tired, and I eat more chocolate... and I'm usually open about it also... but it's all about each different girl. If you're around her enough to want to know something's up, you're probably close enough to be able to ask, right? ;)

spived2 01-15-2004 12:25 AM

If they're reluctant to have sex when normally they would, that could be it. That's when I know, anyways.

skysooner 01-15-2004 07:07 AM

With my wife there is no clue. She used to wear larger pads, so I could tell when she switched to a certain kind of underwear. She finally found a pad that would fit in her g-strings, so it is hard to tell. Of course, we have been married so long now that she just tells me.

ratbastid 01-15-2004 07:26 AM

lurkette's on a birth-control pill that she can use to skip periods. She usually only has periods once every three or four months, and she usually times for when it's convenient.

Even if I didn't know in advance, I'd have one big clue. We normally sleep nude. Except when she's having her period, in which case she wears panties to bed. So it'd be pretty obvious, if I were looking to make a guess about it.

vveronica 01-15-2004 07:26 AM

well all I can add is if she is wearing white pants she will be getting it. Seems to happen to me in white pants all the time.... heheheheheheh

That's me too. On the same pill. LOVE it. Panties to bed when it's that time but otherwise nude. During the day I tend to wear more frumpy or at least more comfy cosy clothes. I tend toward the anemic side and during my period get VERY cold sometimes. Warmer clothes can be a cue. Those thong pads don't work that great - in my opinion. They can still come of and stick to me in uncomfortable places. I just try not to wear thin pants or skirts that would show a pantyline anyway. Still no panty line can still be a cue that there's no period. Lots of my girlfriends don't bother with those thong pads.

*Nikki* 01-15-2004 07:46 PM

I know I do get a lot more emotional during that time.

It is probably best for all men to just avoid communicating with me at that point.

I tell my boyfriend it is that time of the month and he gets all quite and says "oh" like he has to start walking on eggshells or something. It is pretty funny.

what pill would this be?

omega2K4 01-15-2004 09:15 PM

My girlfriend usually gets more moody/emotional than usual, and I can usually find tampon wrappers lying around the house somewhere. Like mentioned before, we usually sleep nude, but whenever she's on her period she'll wear panties and/or pajama pants/sweatpants. She seems to eat a lot of ice cream and other sweets whenever she's on her period also.

Seasonale - You take it for 84 days before you hit the seven placebo pills. It comes in a nice little "book" with all you need for those 91 days. It's brand new - came out just this year.

sounds great!!!

Back to your question, Afterburn, with some girls (well I only know for sure about myself, but than it becomes so personal héy) you can tell by "examening" their facial skin thoroughly. You could notice some small zits or "unpurities on the skin", that weren't there during the rest of the month. Well at least with "younger girls", i don't know if this is a continuing trend when girls get older...

As for the white pants... i don't see a legitimate reason for anyone to wear white trousers, male or femalel, periods or no periods, distastefull or just colour-blind!:D

Um, good luck getting close enough to MY face to "examine". I mean, how're you gonna do that without it being noticed by the girl? Just freakin' ASK her. :p

wilbjammin 01-24-2004 12:04 PM

This may sound weird, but my extraordinary sense of smell can usually tell me. It's very subtle. This isn't the only thing, for sure, you'd be surprised what your nose can tell you if you pay close attention to it.

Other than that, girls have an uncanny ability to blatantly tell me. I guess I have that "tell me if you're on your period" aura to me...(?)

1. They are wearing Granny Panties.

2. They have a purse or backpack with them even though they don't normally carry one.

3. They take their purse/backpack into the bathroom with them, even when they could safely leave it elsewhere.

4. Also, they will probably leave trash all over the place (tampon applicators, pad wrappers, etc.)

motdakasha 01-24-2004 10:59 PM

Just responding to the topic: You can't!

No, it's called pheromones.. that, or you need to tell them to work on their hygiene.

Paq 01-25-2004 12:38 AM

oh, nono, i mean
I normally freak people out...

and a couple of you out there really do need to work on the hygeine... you know who you are :)

but seriously, this all came about 9-10 yrs ago and hit really hardcore, so suddenly i had this nose that could pick out certain people from about 10 ft away.

I wonder if there is a way to make money off that....hmmm

Dixie_Wrekked 01-25-2004 12:51 AM

yea thats a problem we all face at one point, the "red tide" is mysterious and unexpected and unwanted

Paq 01-25-2004 02:05 AM

Actually...

as a guy
I want to see it come on my girlie...

no babies is a good thing :)

Damnfinn 01-25-2004 09:49 AM

There is no way to make money off of it, trust me!

Some are more noticable than others, but yeah... I can consistently tell. Funny though, the respond to "I'm on my period" with "I know" doesn't go over well!

eek!

I started realizing this after reading Roots of all things. In it, Kunta (I think) noticed that it was that time of the month for someone from the smells. And I got to thinking about it, and then I just started paying attention to learning as much as I could with my nose. It took a little practice with paying attention, but now I don't even have to try. Sometimes I wonder if it really is a curse.

As for picking out certain people by their smells, I can also do that. Men and women alike that I know fairly well. I remember asking someone if my friend had just been at his house who doesn't normally visit, and he asked how I knew... I could smell his presence. It wasn't strong, but it was distinct.
