How to deal spending this holiday season without a SO

This will be my first christmas in 3 years I will be spending it single. I am already dreading it. Sure I'll be with family and friends but it's just not the same. I feel like a significant part of my life has left me forever. I try not to think about her but do anyway on a daily basis. It's going to be a hard christmas for me. How is everyone who had a recent long term breakup going to deal this holiday?

Zorvox 12-18-2003 08:11 AM

I am going to put everything aside, go to my mother's with my younger brother's eat an absolute shitload then perhaps drink or something...

I know it's not easy hey.. all the little things you use to do together, you don't do anymore :(

It's Christmas man, it's about strength and the power of love, ya family is there for that :D

Have a good one :)

I have been there in the past. Bets if you cant to over do for your family... get extra presents spend more time get in and close. Go as overboard as you can. Then as everyone settles at the end of the night take that special moment to reflex on just how luccky you are and put is all behind.. It really does work..

tikki 12-18-2003 09:03 AM

Get liquored up. You won't remember a thing.

oberon 12-18-2003 09:10 AM

Relax, get drunk, go ski/snowmobile/sled/etc. Watch lots of movies. Have fun! What the hell else would people do on holiday vacation?!? :)

EDIT:
Sorry, I don't have a recent long-term breakup. But that's my advice to you.
Also, don't necessarily do these things in this order... ;)

I'm in a similar situation as you JesusPimp. I'll keep myself busy by doing other things.. I'll go see my family and some friends; therefore I won't be spending the whole time about her.

Also, since I won't have to buy her a gift, that will give me a few hundred of dollars that I can waste =D

Giltwist 12-18-2003 09:28 AM

My gf is home for xmas break, so I don't get to see her either.

tenchi069 12-18-2003 12:12 PM

Long distance relationship here, and no we won't be together for xmas. Advice to how to spend the holidays...Don't regret, don't do the should've, would've, could've game. Find friends and or family, enjoy yourself. Christmas is about those you love and those that love you and it is a rare person that doesn't have at least 1 of each.

skysooner 12-18-2003 12:40 PM

Keep busy. Don't give yourself time to reflect. It is going to take awhile to get over this. Holidays are probably the worst you are going to face. Once January hits, it is a new year and at least for me, mentally it is a new start.

present_future 12-18-2003 12:56 PM

I'm in the same boat as you. I just plan on keeping myself busy enough so that I won't have time to think about it. A little alcohol never hurt anybody either.

HockeyGuy 12-18-2003 06:39 PM

Keep busy, go to the pub with friends, spend time with the family. And get outside doing some physical activities (snowboarding/skiiing/hiking) if you get the chance. I've found the outdoors when doign somethign is great. Don't look back, know that it'll all be for the best.

imperfect_anya 12-18-2003 10:28 PM

I say go out with friends, make bonds stronger, and make memories that won't be tainted by breakups. But also spend time doing what you like to do and dig into all those holiday traditions.

Gelfling 12-20-2003 07:11 AM

This is my first holiday being single in at leat 5 years, its not easy at all. I was doing ok being single until it got closer. The guy i've been seeing lately, I kinda asked to be a bf the other day, but gave me a weird answer, so I've just dropped it. I'm the one that said I didn't want a relatioship, and I needed to just sit back and see that i am only asking for more cause of the holiday and it being depressing. Spend more time with your family and keep yourself busy the best you can.

Tophat665 12-20-2003 07:14 AM

Well, you can have mine, as long as you take the kids too.

Seriously though, I am from nowhere near Purdue, but beer is your friend here.

We're in the same boat. The last christmas i spent without a girlfriend was '98 (had one in '99)... four years I had it... and now i'm facing it alone for the first time since i've started having girlfriends. I don't know quite how to handle it, although I still talk with her almost every day. I just don't know what I want.

Holidays in general, but christmas even more so, have always been very special to me, and very close to my heart. For me, being with my girl at christmas time has been very meaningful, even when we were long-distance... I still knew she was there. It's starting to weigh heavy on me, but I think if we just sit back and realize that we should be thankful we're alive and for the basic things we have, we'll all be just fine.

jay-g 12-21-2003 02:55 AM

Dont feel bad....I have never had a SO during any holiday. I could never find the "right" girl. I kind of got use to being independent and alone. Now that i have finally have a girl that i can call my own, i cant spend christmas with her. We are doing the ever impossible long distance thing. Ohhhh, how i wish i could be with her.....

sub zero 12-23-2003 04:54 PM

I recently broke up with my GF about three weeks ago. In my family we are so many usually we do like a secret santa so we don't go broke from buying everyone presents. I bought everyone presents and bought some extra stuff for myself.
I've also been making sure to catch up on stuff that had been ignored recently...mostly my games and such.
Remember it hurts a shit load...but if you can't trust in your family...there aren't many others you can trust in

SVT01Cobra 12-23-2003 06:21 PM

Booze booze and more booze. :p

Now New Year's, that's a completely different story. :D

(BTW, is it ok to talk about booze if you're not 21?)

Averett 12-23-2003 06:25 PM

Yeah fuckin New Years. I've never had a kiss on New Years. Even last year when I was with a guy.... We were hanging out in a hotel room with his friends, and well.... since he had a girlfriend I guess he figured kissing me would be messed up. So he kissed his friend Nathan! Then about a half an hour he passed out. Damn, so close!

SVT01Cobra 12-23-2003 06:28 PM

Aww, I'm sorry Averett, you can kiss me. :D

I've had some good times on New Years... Good times.

im just a girl 12-24-2003 11:19 AM

i have had a semi-serious relationship for the past 3 years. each one terminated right before christmas. i decided that this is why christmas cookies are so popular. nothing says 'merry effing christmas' like half a roll of cookie dough

juanvaldes 12-24-2003 12:01 PM

Booze and Porn! :D

SAM821 12-24-2003 03:52 PM

Averett - I dont understand why you have such bad luck with men... an enigma that should be answered... Im really sorry to hear that, I hope that you get kissed this year! Your a good looking girl (from what Ive seen on TFP) so i really dont see why this is? Hope this year is different for you!

Jesus Pimp - Honestly, your friends and family will keep you company.... I guess I am used to it (not spending the holidays with SO)... I've had many girlfriends, but for some reason it just doesnt work out and ironically they are all over with before the holidays...(pretty ironic) the last holiday I was with SO (during holidays) was... '99 - '00.... thats crazy!... I get used to it... i just broke things off with my ex that i was with for just about a year (we began dating january 5th and broke up in november); see what i mean?

I must be cursed.... :(

Just try to keep your mind occupied as much as possible... I really hope things work out (it helps to go out of town too... ive done that 3 or 4 times out of the last 5 holidays... )
