Glam for bois?

Over the years, I've appreciated women taking the time and effort to look special. It's work, but it's also play, and it's something that we in the straight male community don't generally do. Screw that. I've decided to spend the next while having fun with fashion.

I'm writing about it here as an invitation to the ladies of the board to chime in with what unusual looks on men they've enjoyed in the past. Also for the fearless guys to say what's worked for them.

My look in the past has always been the tall, thin type covered over with loose, flowing fabrics. Dark shades and earth tones. Goth-rustic, if you will. Expanding out of that one step at a time, I've started playing with (unnatural colours of) make-up, and I'm trying to find some stretchier clothes I like to mix in with the loose ones that currently dominate my wardrobe. Me-specific advice/requests, anyone? General words of wisdom for anyone contemplating this path?

--- posted on the Sex board because part of the idea here is to be as sexually tempting as girls in cleavage baring shirts, tight jeans, spring dresses, and all the other shameless eye-grabbing attire that men get tormented with daily. ---

For more unusual items. I love silk shirts on guys. I can't keep my hands of it/him when it feels good to touch.

I like slimmer slacks whether they be the fashion or not. I've hated seeing the slouchy cargo pants withboxers peaking out. Slouchy, sloppy makes me cringe. Neat, orderly and fitted is what I love to see and what makes me come back for more.

I do not claim to be in touch with current fashions in any way. These are just my taste and what attracts me.

I'm baaaaack!

Mascara on a man is hot. Not obvious mascara, but enough to make your lashes look longer. Try clear mascara first, and if that does not work, use the black/brown, depending on hair color.

A little eyeshadow can go far- if you are a pale tone, use a white or cream colored shadow at first- it just makes that area look smooth and creamy.

I would start by only emphasizing the eyes, and moving out from there, since the eyes are the first place girls look.

Black pants- only if leather or slacks. I hate black jeans. You can try and go a little tight, to get a nice emphasis on the rear, but not too tight. It is easy to look dumb if you go too tight.

Sideburns- definitley grow sideburns. They don't need to be long, or bushy, but there.

I also love the white blouse shirt on guys. Wear lots of those.

Simple rule... bring a girl to shop with you.

I have NO sense of style, but I dress nicely because I always bring a gf or female-friend along to pick out the stuff.

What I have learned in 2-3 outings is amazing... women have rules for the weirdest things (who knew wearing white socks with khakis was bad?).

colours. Well coordinated but stand out colours on a male is fantastic.

I personally enjoy dark nail polish on men. It's pretty hip.

Then I'm already scoring on your scale. The first thing I check in clothing is how it feels.

No big change here. I already do loose slacks, but hardly baggy ones.

And that's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks!

Been blessed with naturally long lashes. Mascara would be overkill.

Been playing with an iridescent midnight blue. (Stroke of Midnight, from M-A-C). Haven't drawn the general conclusion on it yet, but even the subtlest form (Put it on, wash it off, some residue remains) drew some comments. A female friend of mine spotted it immediately, asked about it, and left a complement. A guy friend just said "nice eyeliner" sincerely and left it at that. The cute girl across the yoga class stared at me in a way she hadn't before, or maybe that was just wishful thinking.

Yep. That's already most of my wardrobe. Black pants. Slacks, pajama bottoms, linen goodness. Black.

I don't think that look is me. I'm the slim guy. Muttonchops aren't going to fit.

I could get one of these, but more than that and I think I vanish down the hole of hopelessly, formulaically goth.

I'm told that I'm already pretty good with colours. It's easy to make one dramatic article stand out when the backdrop is so clean.

That's an idea. I've never been into nail polish myself, but perhaps it's time to re-evaluate that.

So.. lots of good and specific advice here. Anyone have any more dramatic suggestions?

Other ideas I've been toying with have been... (Not for all at once!)

- overflowing eyeshadow in 2 different shades

- bleaching one side of my hair. (it's naturally deep brown, with some silver growing in now)

- henna runes over one side of my face, spiraling down the arm, and elsewhere

(Yeah, a lot of ideas for playing with asymmetry.)

Oh, and I already have pointed nails on my left hand, but that has everything to do with classical guitar. The fashion implications are accidental.

What about shimmer powder? Especially if you have nice cheekbones. I always liked dark nail polish, black, wine, midnight blue... You could also play with hair mascara to match your nails or clothes, instant highlights and temporary too. Soft fabrics (velvet or silk) and deep colors, clean lines (hair, makeup, nails, clothes) are all very attractive. I had never thought of henna... that would be sexy on an arm or shoulder or chest...

personally , I like the preppy look... sweaters, khaki's... no sweatervests or anything, but something slightly clingy is always good... go for neat. as someone above said, that retarded lets hang our pants to our knees thing is NOT attactive.

Personally I'm not into the whole glam look. But I know some girls are really into it, so whatever floats your boat

Shimmer powder? Hair mascara? You've just named 2 products i didn't know existed.. do tell more. Cheekbones are one of my strong points, so tell more about the shimmer powder especially.

Funny. I've done something like all of the above before. Just with black mixed in with the khaki. Because even then I liked black...

Tonight's fashion explorations involved acquiring more stretchy stuff. Still in black. Stretch pants from Kenneth Cole. (Preppy, yet leave little/nothing to the imagination.) Stretch-T from Cal Klein.

Yeah, my clothes fit and don't obviously contradict eachother. I just wear khakis all the time (with white socks) with either t-shirts(rarely) or button-up shirts(mostly). If it's warm enough to get away with, I go with shorts. I've never contemplated makeup, but try to keep myself cleanly shaven and well groomed. Anything else would only be for a special occasion, and that would be like dark socks and tucked-in shirt unless I were getting married or something, in which case I'd dress accordingly.

Shimmer and hair mascara are exactly what they shound like. You can use any light catching product anywhere you choose to add a little bit of shimmer and color. You can use loose eyeshadow or even the roller kind of eyeshadow and apply is to your skin for an all over glow or in select spots for drama. Hair mascara is just like regular mascara but colored and you put it in your hair. You can also use colored hair gel. Both are temporary and come in all sorts of colors. Just keep your eyes open next time you look at cosmetics. Odds are, you already have something you could use in a whole new way.
