Everyone is different. So the first thing any couple should do is to communicate these very things, i.e. what is it you like to hear, how and where do you like to be touched, etc.
That being said, I like it when my mate and I talk dirty, usually starting slow and building in intensity as we both do.

Lebell hits the nail on the head. Communication. Simply talk it over sometime before you engage in sex and when the time is right, let the filth flow. While talking it over, definately set the boundries so egos do not get bruised.
Also, if the talk starts getting out of hand, you may want to have set up in advance a "safe" word or phrase. Kind of like what S&M'ers do. If the pillow talk (or rough sex) starts to go too far, either you or your partner can say the safe word and you both will agree to go "back to basics."

Here's a typical exchange.
Me: "So, you wanna root?" Her: "Nah. But you're such a silver-tongued bastard, you talked me into it." ;-)

Interesting. My gf had this thing at the beginning of our relationship. She expressly didn't want to talk about sex. Wouldn't tell me what she liked, didn't want to know about me. She felt it was to early in the relationship to make that kind of demands... thought we needed to explore each other without talking about it. So I explored However,I'm a big proponent of communicating, especially about sex, so it threw me for a while. any thoughts?

I find describing what I want to do to her, in incredible detail, makes my gf squirm. Get inventive, and throw in lots of details. If what you are describing means that you will be taking off her bra for the next 45 minutes, work with it.
