I have an ampallang (it is the piercing the goes through the head horizontally). I had it done about 12 years ago.

I had it done after reading RE:Search Modern Primitives. After I saw pictures of various piercings I just couldn't get the idea of getting on out of my mind. I thought about it and it just seemed like the right thing to do (and I thought about it for at least a year before I did it).

I booked the appointment and was nervous but resolved to follow through. The pain of the actual piercing was little compared to the "discomfort" of the clamp used to bring the two sides closer together. It was over before I knew it.

Needless to say I was very happy with the experience and the end result. It was a very "spiritual" event for me (for lack of a better word). It marked me internally as well as externally.

In part, I viewed it at the time as a coming of age "ritual". Much as youth in other cultures must in endure to "reach" manhood. I'm not sure I see it that way now but then that was 12 years ago...

with my frenum, it is wise to tighten the barbell ends at least dailly, because i went a couple days without tightening it, and next thing I knew, while showering, the end came off. so as long as the ends are tightened beforehand, all is good.

And if you're really, really stressed at the thought of the pain, the whole area can be numbed with topical anaesthetic.

You might have to go to a different city (local authority regs vary in the uk) to use pain numbing type stuffs, but the option is there.

I know you can get anaesthitis in nottingham. I know you can't in liverpool.

any decent piercer will know you cannot use acrylic jewelry until your piercing is full healed and then some. something to do with acrylic and leaking toxins into a fresh piercing is a bad thing.
