Depo Provera
my girl is about to begin this quarterly birth control shot. research shows it decreases sex drive and throws off metabolism severely. we are both concerned about the first side effect, and she is also equally concerned about the second. anybody have any experience with this birth control method, which also happens to be a method of controling rape offenders in prison.
|
Google it. Some people love it, some hate it. Do some research.
|
A past girlfriend gained about 15 lbs the first quarter she was on it. She never got the second shot.
But - again - some people use it and don't have any problems at all! |
The wife uses it, and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, as far as I'm concerned. The worst side effect that she's suffered has been a 16 gauge hole in the skin.
|
Someone I worked with had it. She didn't have any problem with sex drive, but she did gain quite a bit of weight.
|
I don't know if this is the one that my gf is using, but she does take a shot every 3 months (sounds like it is though :)) She's never had any problems with it, gaining about 10 lbs or so at first, but no effect on her sex drive.
How is it used as 'a method of controling rape offenders in prison'? |
whatever chemical it is that is in the shot that decreases female sex drive, also renders male recipients of the shot, completely devoid of libido. i was on the debate team in high school and this was one of the solutions for overcrowding in prisons. give convicted rape offenders quarterly shots of depo in different doseages to make it so they dont have the desire to rape. dont know if it was ever approved, but i know that legislation was in the works for years and years.
|
My fiancee is on it, and we love it. There has been some weight gain, but we don't know if it's attributed to the Depo because we just started college where they have not-so-healthy food in the dining halls and you can eat all you want. As for the sex drive...there might be a slight decrease, but we haven't really noticed any.
|
My sister tried it out and was ill for about one and a half months. Nothing serious, but she was always worn-out, stomach issues and headaches.
Sorry, I didnt ask about the decreased sex drive though :p |
Hiya,
My wife has been on it for 5 years, and we have had no problems. She loves it because she has not had a period in 5 years. My worst problem is she makes me give her the shot. (ow) Good luck, RANSOM |
ransom, where do you pick up the bottle? I think my fiancee might want that more then having to go to a planned parenthood.
|
It's great!! My girlfriend in college used it and all I can say is..FUN!! She had no bad side effects only some spotting once in a while. I highly recommend it if you know your girl and yourself are clear of any STDs.
|
the side effects can be wicked...if she has ever had a bad reaction to emergency contraception or "morning after pill" DO NOT USE DEPO. At least, make sure to tell the doc about the reaction...a friend was in this situation, and despite knowing about her side effects with morning after pills, she still got the injection, and it fucking tossed her around for 3 weeks. Never seen a human being so miserable for just one shot.
|
My wife was on it for almost 2.5 years. Its awesome, no worries about anything, and she did not have a period anymore.
However, the reason she went off it is, weight gain, and loss of sex drive. But a friend of hers did not notice any loss in sex drive, but she is a very sexual person. But did notice weight gain. |
I'm on it and have been for 3 years. I LoVe it! I had no weight gain and no period since I started. I didn't have any change in my sex drive that I noticed, either. The worst thing is that I get MEGA pms the week before i need my shot, but other than that, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
|
My g/f and 2 of her friends are using Depo. They have no problens but my g/f's reaction gets progressively worse over the year since she's been on it. The fist time she got it we thought is was too cool for school. Over the next few sessions, when she's at around the time she usually gets her period, she gets progressively "uncomfortable".
She's never had PMS but has been getting it since being on Depo. Every shot she gets she just gets more bonkers than the time before. Like chavos said...never seen a more miserable human being... Thank goodness for wackky tobakky. It really helps mellow her out after the depo shot. It also helps that we can talk each other through such an ordeal. It must be love. |
Ive been on it for about two years now and I gained about ten pounds, but it wasn't a big deal cuz i'm small. I didn't notice any change in sex drive, but my bf did mention moodiness but I think i've always been moody. I love it and wouldn't ever think of changing to the pill.

Normally your wife or girlfriend has to go the the doctor for a checkup and get a prescription. Once she has the prescription, she just gets it filled every 3 months. GL RANSOM |
I was on it and I loved it until I started gaining a lot of weight. Then I stopped it.
|
My wife has used it for a long time and is COMPLETELY pleased! I am too!
|
It can fuck you up big time.
You have to wait AT LEAST one year after taking it before you become pregnant or the child could have problems. When you do get off of it, it can cause your period to be essentially non-stop (like, say 3 mths straight) before your body gets back into a rhythm. |
All right...
Depo was one of the first forms of birth control that I tried...it's a sob story. I got my first injection, and my period started not too long after and .... lasted the entire three months. I went back to my gyno and said there was no way I would do it again, and she said that that only occurs in 10% of women (sorta a lot, actually). Also, she mentioned that the second time around, this is solved for the mass majority. So, I sighed, and took the shot in the ass again. Now what happened? I had my period for another three months. It sucked. I guess im in the 1% of chics this happens to, but I heard from another friend that she had the same experience. I've also heard a couple of success stories. For me, six months of messy sex will never happen again. *nose wrinkle* |
The same as with any other pill, it has pros and cons. The difference being, that you can easily change a 'normal' oral pill if it fecks up your dearly beloved's system/psyche/body image.

More Ewww for having to have a shot. Ewww! I'm creeped out over here... |
No good.
The DP shot almost *ruined* my wife's sex drive and our time together.
First, she became uber-self-conscious due to the 10+ lbs. she gained. Then, her "period" still showed up in the form of "spotting." It was very disappointing for her to not be able to enjoy sex with me, and she felt bad being unable to "help" me, er..."traditionally." Don't even get me started on her sex drive. It was at ZERO, and continued as such for several MONTHS after she quit the shot. She was on the shot for about 4 months. The weight gain happened after about 1 1/2 months, and her sex drive was GONE after 2 months. It has taken 8+ months for her drive to return...and even at that, it's sparingly "back to normal." Truth is, "everybody's different." The shot just wasn't for my wife. It was hell, and we aren't going back. sw |

when i was on it i gained alot of weight and i did lose my sex drive. . . after about 6 months anytime i had sex afterwards i would spot heavily. . . I also developed heart palpitations. . . if i were you i would steer clear of it, try the ring or the patch first, the pills also work alot better than anything but if y ou cant remember to take them all the time its not worth it. good luck
DEPO IS EVIL!!!! |
Works fine for my wife. I have yet to see any lowering in sex drive, and she feels fine on it, and it's been quite awhile. The only thing *I* miss is the period, but I'm sure she doesn't ;)
|
This thing killed one of my relationships. She put on 30+ pounds became depressed and *extremely* moody. I and my current SO use the new IUD without hormones. It works like a champ. Better than the pill or screwing yourself up for several months straight.
|
I gained some weight on it, but he doesn't mind (he likes big girls) "I like big butts and I cannot lie, you other guys can't deny" Heh.
I *love* not taking the pill everyday. I can kinda forgetful, and that equals instant shrinkage if you're having sex, he says "Did you take your pill today?" and if you have to think about it, or say no, bye bye hardness. 3 months of totally spontaneous sex w/o pills is awesome. :icare: |
That shot was horrible for my girlfriend. First off, sex drive went bye bye. Next, we argued so much that I didnt want to touch her anyway. It gave her whicked mood swings. I made her get off of it or we we going to break up I think.
|
my wife was on it for several years, stayed horney as hell all the time, i was actually sick of sex for a while, she did gain some weight with it. since coming off of it sex is like a once a month thing, twice if im lucky, and not near as good as it was then. kinda makes me bitter. doesnt matter what she looks like if she doesnt give it up.

Quadrette took it when we first started dating. She had similar experiences to the ones above. I asked her to contribute her opinion to this thread, so here it is:
**************** i took depo for about 1 year, maybe a little less. at first, it was great - one shot for 3 mos, and i never thought about it again. there was some weight gain, but not enough for me to care. i didn't notice too much in terms of emotional roller coaster issues - but then, i was melodramatic to begin with. :) it didn't even strike me as weird to not have a period at all - i was delighted! but after about 6 mos or so, i started getting random bleedthrough action - a little here or there is fine, but when you suddenly realize you've ruined your new boyfriend's sheets (lucky Quadro), it's a little upsetting. mind you, not EVERYONE has these kinds of issues, but i did. this from a gal who never had much concern over her monthly to begin with - it was always around, but pretty easy to deal with compared to other girls. try it - but the minute you get bleedthrough more than once for more than one week - do something else. ************** So there you have it. The spotting just eventually became too much to deal with. She initially took it because she was worried that she wouldn't remember to take a daily pill, but like everything else, it's become second nature. |
I have never got the shot for the simple fact that I had such a problem with the birth control pill. The main ones were my weight gain (especially because I had always been so small), the loss of sex drive, and the soreness of my breast. Just to touch them would kill me. After the bad experience with those my husband and I chose to just use condoms. Yeah they suck, and it feels 100 times better without them but there are no side effects with them either.
I would say that every person is different, and will react differently to the shot. Think how many millions of women are on the pill, I however was just one of the unlucky ones that couldn't take them. Your girl may get the shot and be fine like lots of women, or she might take it and have lots of problems, like many women. Try doing a lot of reasearch on it first. I do know my sister got the shot once and never got it again. Don't know the problems she had with it, never asked but apparently it wasn't something she was to thrilled with either. |

I posted this in a previous topic. It's definitely enough to keep me away from the stuff. |
I dated a girl that used this shot. It messed up her body badly and made her extremely emotionally volitile. And then after 6 months or so you bleed for like a month straight.
