Help me decipher my herpes test results

I picked this up from he lab this morning. (and retyped it). It looks like the first test they did came back positive, but has cases where it will be positive because of other things (says it cross reacts). Maybe it's a cheap but broad test they do first to see if they need to do the more expensive more accurate test? The more specific tests both seem clean. Should I get retested to confirm, or do I need to even worry about it at all? The possible exposure was about 3 months ago.

Formatting is a bit messed up.

Code:

Test Name                            In Range          Out of Range          Reference Range

HERPES SIMPLEX IGM W/RFX TITER
HSV IGM AP SCREEN                                    DETECTED              NOT DETECTED
HSV IGM AB TITER                                    20 H                  <10 titer
This test does not distinguish between HSV 1 and HSV 2. A positive HSC
IgM may indicate primary or reactivated infection. IgM antibody can
persist 12+ months after primary infection. Cross reactions occur with
varicella zoster, CMV and EBV. Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 IgG type
specific antibody (HerpeSelect), helps confirm and differentiate prior
infection with HSV 1 or HSV 2.

why don't you just call the lab and ask them specifically?

Daniel_ 10-23-2009 09:41 AM

Both scores are below 0.90, so you're negative for both tests.

World's King 10-23-2009 09:43 AM

Or you could ask who you got it from...

I don't have a phone number for the lab, and I do have an appointment with my GP next week (they would not talk to me over the phone). I don't want to spend several days worrying.

The person I had exposure from tested positive for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 on a type-specific test.

done.

Initial screening tests should be designed to err on the side of "false positives", so at the moment, everything should be fine for you. I have no idea what the gestation period is for herpes, anyone know? Probably your doctor would.

*cues up that Team America: World Police intro song*

Sorry, I can't help it.

Yes, because advice from people on the Internet is always accurate, so that should take all worry away.

What are you talking about? We're experts on the human body... especially anatomy.

So you got herp from a one night stand? Sweet. I think getting herpes might be the least of your problems in life.

Slims 10-23-2009 03:06 PM

Good news,

You got two A's a B and a C!

Plan9 10-23-2009 03:19 PM

Oh holy shit, that's funny.

...

Ya know, whenever I go to get tested (~6 months) at the Free Clinic: Yes, We Still Allow White People, they don't bother with the herp test while they're poking my balls and sucking my blood. They just look at HIV as far as the incurables go. They say the herp test is too expensive for what it is... "flaky and inconclusive" because it only states that you've been exposed but may not "have" it. The lack of faith in tests is kinda scary.

This brings to mind that wonderful quote from Super Troopers:

"...And that was the second time I got crabs."

---------- Post added at 04:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:27 PM ----------

And no, doesn't look like you tested positive in either test. But I'm not a doctor, or a cryptologist, so ehhh

Toaster126 10-23-2009 05:59 PM

I don't understand how that is unreadable at all. It gives the criteria and your number right on there. :)

wraithhibn 10-23-2009 07:03 PM

You should just probably cut your penis off so you don't spread it.

+1

Negative on all counts.

Fuck away.

BTW, just so you know, condoms offer minimal protection against herpes since they cover maybe half of the pee pee.

Cheers
