So What Were They Doing In The Shower Together?
A girl I dated in college routinely showered with two or three of her other (female) housemates. When asked what would transpire in their long, group shower sessions I would always get an "oh, nothing" or "we just talk about sex stuff." So what gives? The idea of showering with my (male) housemates is so foreign to me, I really have a hard time believing that they were just talking or, if they were, why they would shower together and talk about sex. Any insights from the females of the TFP is appreciated. Thanks.

We call those "shower parties." Some of my female friends have been known to have them. Some people are just comfortable with their bodies. In early college, I used to shower in the open shower in the locker room with my female friends, and we would take a fairly long time at it, just talking all the while, before adjourning to the sauna (where we would also lounge nude for quite a while). From what I hear from female friends who shower with other female friends, it's much the same experience--just being comfortably nude with people you're comfortable with. Nudity isn't always sexual. In fact, the Japanese have a term called hadaka no tsukiai to describe the kind of physical intimacy achieved in these kinds of casually nude bathing situations.

I find it weird that they'd shower together, simply cause that's a very confined space. But I do go to a Korean bath-house with my mom and some of her friends once in a while, and it's just like going to a pool but with no clothes on. It's actually quite nice! They have saunas and tubs and showers and relaxing rooms. It's a great place. You just sit around and wash yourself and talk and relax. There's nothing sexual whatsoever going on in there.

I've showered with my male friends in open group showers...no biggie.

Im with op on this one. I cant imagine having a shower with someone or being completely naked with anyone, without it being sexual.

Here in Iceland, it's very natural to be naked with other people (of your same gender, mostly--but I don't think it would be that weird to be with guys, either)... there is a huge pool/swimming culture here, and the rule is that you have to be naked in the group showers (because they don't use much chlorine in the pools, so everyone has to soap up really well beforehand).
My first time swimming was a little nerve-racking, as I was raised to be conservative about nudity... but after I got used to it, I loved the freedom of just being nude with other women, and not having to worry about it at all. I think it also is part of the reason that I was willing to try the nude beach, and to sit naked in the hot pots and rivers in the Icelandic nature. You just become comfortable with your body in a way that is not encouraged in the US. When my American friends come to visit (and my family), though, they have a hard time enjoying the pool because of the shower-stress (nudity) beforehand, which is disappointing. |
This thread is useless without pictures.

I've been going to the pool since I was a little kid, so I became comfortable around nude guys at a young age, since many men shower nude (mostly after swimming) and are obviously nude when they change.
Basically I just realized at an early age that "We all got the same parts" so it doesn't matter. |
I showered with guys in college and on teams. It was basically because the dorm or locker room only had group showers.
I didn't talk about sex stuff though. I considered it bad form to talk at all, like sidling up next to somebody at a urinal when there are clearly others available. |

To address the OP, I guess at some point you need to decide if you believe her or not. I'll grant that more is possible, but sometimes a shower is just a shower, and her dorm may have only had group showers for all to use. Without knowing more, all we're going to do is guess. |
I used to be totally body conscious (and embarrassed about being fat and pasty and unattractive), but having joined a gym I've realised that I'm a long way from the bottom of the heap, and I now have no great worry about wandering around naked - I've not shared a shower with other guys, but if it was required, it wouldn't frighten me any more.
|
On a mostly related note, I always found it very odd to go to or work at gyms in which the men had an open shower room and the women had stalls. Women are suppsed to be plenty open with each other and often pee with one another etc, but they can't use an open shower??
And about the original post, I guess I can believe it that it was not sexual or weird and that it was all about female bonding or whatever, but I choose to have a lesbian shower scene in my head, but that's just me. |

I never got use to anything like that. And for some thing I cant imagine that.
But girls showering together is hard to imagine without flirting/fun. Again I am not exposed to such experience |
My invitation was clearly lost in the mail.

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, I'm not talking about a large, open shower room like one found in a gym or dorm. I'm talking about a small bathtub-type shower. Three or four (hot) naked women squeezed in one of these is a completely different scenario. I mean, how do you even take turns under the shower head without rubbing up against each other? :orly:

Flat out ask them: How the hell do you fit 4 girls in a bathtub shower? Bonus points for a demonstration. I recommend bringing this up during a night a drinking.

I agree with onesnowyowl on this one.
I used to shower with my friends and it was non-sexual. Although, mine did not go on for long periods of time. We were just really comfortable with each other and our bodies. |
The discomfort is a consequence of the sexual repression the West has experienced for almost 2,000 years with, obviously, some European countries excluded. It's probably worse in the States because of our inherent prudish nature due to the various Christian religious denominations we've got here. The ancients didn't have any problems with this kind of behavior.

It's the medium women that hide in the changing room - and from what I understand, it's women like girl C in the "Chubby" thread who lack confidence - which just shows how fucked up body image is in our society. |
