I hug my friends when I see them after a long time away. I don't find it gay at all. Here in Argentina men kiss eachother on the cheek instead of shaking hands. It may seem "gay" but it's not as if the men kissing are sexually attracted to one another, it's all a matter of cultural perception.

some of it is cultural.
Like, I dunno, the rock n roll crowd is all about thier image of being hardcore rebels, hugging might not fit so well there. but if you go to a rave, everyone expects a damned hug (almost annoyingly so) then the hip hop crowd... heh.. I'm not even gonna go there. You might get shot. |

Well copious amounts of ecstasy floating around would do that at the "Annual convention of macho men against man hugs"

Among me and my friends here in Denmark it's sort of the only thing we do. A hand shake is too formal and business man-like, doing some sort of high five one or the other way will always come off as a bunch of white guys trying to be "gangsta cool", a slap in the butt is a bit... well, uncalled for. Simply nodding or something else to each other seems cold. Anyway, I guess among most leftist youngsters here in Denmark it's just what we do, gay implications aren't really that important to us, though the right-wing crowd are just as psycho about it as the right-wing crowd in the US.

I don't do man hugs. some of my good friends will initiate the handshake/back pat thing, and I'll participate out of social obligation, but its uncomfortable.
I'll actually initiate a hug with female friends, but its definitely a conscious decision. I never really hugged people growing up. I would give my mom the sideways one arm hug every now and then, never hugged my dad. |
