Is it in bad form to try to pick up customers at work?

Okay, two part question. I currently work for QuikTrip (gas station based out of tulsa for those who don't know). The one I work out is located right across from a local college. I am single. 1+1+2+1=5 There is a fairly regular stream if cute young 'thangs' coming and going. The first question is it even appropriate for me to aproach these women and try to get phone numbers or what not. The second question is.. well how. I would have to pretty much get a number off the bat and go from there because I never have time to chat while working and the only times I could even consider doing it is early in the morning (I work graveyard) when we are not packed, and at those times they normally come in in pairs or worse. Ideas?

If you work at a church? No. If you work at a gas station? I see no problem so long as it doesn't interfere with your work or the company has specific rules against it.

Go for it.

Don't become known as the guy who constantly hits on the ladies when they're just trying to get gas. They will start avoiding the gas station.

I see your dilemma, but I think it's unprofessional to do what you're asking. If someone is interested in you, they'll make themselves available to you.

At the most, if there's someone you're interested in, say something like where or how else you are available after work hours, and they'll know how to better make themselves available for you to ask them out.

Though I do see your point I do wanna clarify one thing, I by know means plan on hitting on every girl in sight. In fact.. let me expand this a little more. I also have been known to play poker at the local casino. There is one particular dealer who is very cute, non traditionally. Same question with her. I suppose what it comes down to is this. I am young, recently single and wanna meet women. I am not going to school, I dislike bars and can't seem to bring myself to just go up to a girl in the grocery store. Where do young men meet woman outside the bar? I defintly do not want to be the creepy guy who is always bothering women..

Join a book club. You have no idea, seriously.

If you really want to meet someone, you have to put yourself in multiple situations where you'd be in conversations with women.

Most of my past girlfriends where met while I was bartending.

I also met a very nice girl at my job now and we've become really really good friends.

I wouldn't consider hitting on someone at work. I'm a college student now and it would creep me out if the clerk started asking for my number. Just a girls perspective. Also that's why I pay at the pump to avoid having to interact with people. Maybe it's just me but I don't like paying the gas prices and I don't want to worry about people hitting on while I do.
Over the summer I used to go to the QTs to get those awesome slushies they have for like 79 cents and I'd go on my break from lifeguarding. I pretty much stopped going to one after I kept getting stared down by people.

See my point? Save hitting on girls for the club or a bar. Not at your job.

BBtB, we have some sexist issues. I like girls hitting on me, even if they're at work. It's fun and threatens nobody. I guess girls feel differently, for obvious reasons. will's suggestion of a book club might work. Do you read?

Extensively. That might be a good idea. I have never considered it before. Now of course I am 22. Is it a good idea for that age range? Where does one find one?

Here is my opinion, and I consider it a steadfast rule for ME:

I NEVER hit on a customer of mine. If they find ME attractive, then I just hope for THEM to make the first move. If you ask even ONE girl for her number, and she gets offended, it can, and most likely WILL cost you your job. Now as to the dealer, I find it NOT inapropriate for a CUSTOMER (in this case you) to strike up a conversation in an attemt to potentially take a person out if YOU are the customer. It is considered unprofessional to ask a customer out, because they are there to get service, whatever the job is, but a customer asking out the provider is acceptable in most cases.

absorbentishe 04-23-2007 07:37 AM

Yup, bad idea. If a girl is interested, she'll let you know in her own way.

Glory's Sun 04-23-2007 09:06 AM

How? that' s easy.. show her the condoms behind the counter and wink at her.

If you want to get a girls number.. then just ask for it. "Hi" works wonders. You should try it sometime.

MSD 04-24-2007 12:21 AM

Why would you work next to a college campus if you're college-age and don't intend to?

Don't be that guy who tries to get every girl who walks in, but if someone catches your eye and you think there's a chance, go for it.

longbough 04-24-2007 04:29 AM

I wouldn't even flirt unless the girl initiated it. If a person is just there to get gas - even a slightly flirtatious approach can get read as "this guy is creepy."

This isn't so much the case if you were living in Europe, however. I'm an American to the core but I've spent a few years living abroad and this is one area they've got over us - fewer hangups about sexuality.

ratbastid 04-24-2007 05:03 AM

Also, casino dealers get hit on CONSTANTLY. If you're going to be something other than a funny story she tells her friends, you'll have to approach with extreme care.

Cynthetiq 04-24-2007 05:31 AM

why shit where you eat?

genuinegirly 04-24-2007 06:20 AM

If they're a regular customer, they enjoy conversing with you, and tend to send a message that they're interested. Otherwise, it's bad form.

Sultana 04-24-2007 07:39 AM

How about instead you attend the college with the "steady stream of cute young thangs". Then you'll always have a perfectly good excuse to talk to any of them, *and* you'll be improving yourself at the same time.

Completely agree. Basically, if the customer initiates flirting, run with it. But you shouldn't initiate anything, as it looks unprofessional.

You work at a gas station, not a law firm. Until you get into uptight, snooty workplace territory, have fun at a job that doesn't pay you enough to care.

Wait for them to aproach you. Greet them with a big smile and a compliment. Let them see that you're easygoing, confident and cool. Watch for hints to carry on a conversation. Let said conversation wander where it may.

Lady Sage 04-24-2007 06:26 PM

Flirt.

If they like it they will flirt back. Half or so of the women these days ask men for dates anyway.
