I find it interesting that in our culture, the way we mock the "incorrect" size/shape of a woman's labia makes a negative statement on how sexually active she is, (or perhaps it's a deeper implication that she enjoys sex too much) while we make fun males in the direct opposite way for the size of a male's penis; ie. he is unable to satisfy a woman.

There has been a recent upsurge in cosmetic surgeries for women in the attempt to look more virginal or pure. Is this a sign that gender roles are becoming more polarized? Or that we as a people are more vain/shallow, selfconcious?

Or is the upswing a result of greater confidence in the medical profession?

When you love someone, you love the parts about them that make them unique, or the parts of them that they only share with you.

IMO, people who focus too intently on one tiny physical characteristic are focusing at such shallow things that they are losing out on enjoyment in life. This includes the whole debate about labia. I'm not aware that there is any particular size labia are "supposed" to be, any more than there is a particular shape that elbows are "supposed" to be. I suppose we can have aesthetic preferences, but I have yet to meet a vulva I didn't like. In an ideal world, no one would care about what other people think. The reality is that people do: people care about their breasts, their penis, and yes, their vagina. They worry that things are too small, too big, too wrinkly, too whatever. There are many women who worry that their vagina is ugly, or maybe they think that vagina's in general are ugly. This may be due to things they've been told or messages they've simply picked up from society.

Of course everyone is entitled to have a preference. There's nothing wrong with preferring one aesthetic look over another. Still, when expressing that preference, one ought to at least try to keep in mind what they're implying. To use an example from this thread, saying that you prefer vaginas "clean and streamlined" implies that vaginas with larger labia are unclean, whether or not this is something you actually believe. That's about as ridiculous as implying a wrinkly scrotum is unclean. And, as we can now see, when people grow up being told that there is a "proper" way for a vagina to look and that other appearances are "used" or "unclean," you're going to hit a nerve if you're not thoughtful when expressing your opinion.
