Question about porn for the "older" crowd
ok, so Im reading all this stuff about teens and online porn etc, and its making me feel old
for those of us that are old enough to have been teens before the internet existed, what was your idea of "porn". When you discovered that somehow someway you could access naked pictures of the opposite sex, how did you go about it? I remember being about 13 and my only access to "porn" was my parents copies of the Joy of Sex and More of the Joy of Sex in their nightstand. I used to wait for them to go away from the house so I could sneak down and keep one eye on the pages and one eye and ear on the door. Spending more time sweating I'd get caught than understanding how what I was looking at made me feel. Back before you could hop online stuff like that just wasnt "available" unless for example you knew where your daddy kept his "stash" (I use "you" as a generic, not to describe myself because my daddy didnt keep porn in the house) Do you think todays teens are "missing out" out on anything (ie less educated, less sense of adventure etc) with having more access to it than we did?

I remember building forts in my basement when I was 12. We used to build them with boxes my parents had in the basement. One time my friend and I were wrestling in the fort and we knocked a wall of the fort over. In the "wall" was my dad's old stash of '70s porn.
That was my first introduction to the naked female body, and I loved it. I think it's still pretty risky (risky in a "I might get caught" sense) for kids to start looking at porn on the internet for the first time, but definitely not as risky as it was when I was younger (which wasn't all that long ago). Today you could probably blame the porn opening up as a pop-up or virus or something. I could only blame finding porn on the "wall" falling over once. However, I don't think it's as much fun. You don't really stumble upon porn on the internet like I stumbled on it when I was younger. -Tamerlain

My parents kept relatively mild porn around the house: Playboy, Penthouse, the occasional Club or Oui. I probably started checking it out with real interest when I was about nine.
At about 10, I had a job babysitting for a 7-year-old and his 2-year-old brother. (!!! what the hell were people thinking back in the seventies???!! I don't think parents would do that these days.) Anyway, this couple had a very extensive porn collection that they didn't bother to hide--like, at all. I'm talking a big stack of Hustlers in the bathroom magazine rack, many copies of Oui, Club, Knave....all that late-seventies porn. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed babysitting for them. In the garden apartment complex where I lived at the time, I would occasionally find other people's stashes: hidden in dark corners in laundry rooms, tucked into crevices of rock outcroppings in wooded areas, etc. Maybe it's just because I was so young and this was my first exposure, but I seem to recall that porn was pretty darn raunchy back then. I still have some of those images burned into my brain. And I could swear that the Penthouse letters section and the dirty stories in other skin magazines were more interesting, kinkier, and of higher quality back in the late '70's and early to mid-eighties--compared to, say, the late eighties and most of the nineties, before internet porn took over.... Does anyone agree? |

I found a selection of magazines that belinged to my father - he used to keep a recent copy under the bed (I assume he and my mother read them together - they had a very "enthusiastic" sex life and made no secret of it).
I found the box of archived magazines in his office (at home) and spent several years (from age 10 - 16) making pocket money by rentinghis spares out to classmates and friends in my scoutgroup. When I was 14, my brother (18) went to Germany and brought back some very hard core porn (british porn then and now banned photos of penetration, ejaculation, etc) featuring anal, oral, cumshots, fisting, watersports, and storylines involving incest, uniforms, voyeurism and so on. My mother confiscated them and told him she'd destroyed them. I found them a few months later in the big ole box-o-porn in my fathers office, and doubled my fees to my classmates. At some point, I remember my mother catching me smugling one of my dad's mags back INTO the house, and I (truthfully) told her I'd been given it by a boy at school (neglecting to mention that I'd rented it to him in the first place). Her response was to tell me that it was OK to look at such magazines, and not to be ashamed, but to tell me that they're for adults. She tried to embaras me by making me sit in the lounge and read it - which I was happy to do; knowing she had a co-worker coming round to the house later, I just waited my mother out. When I discovered internet porn, I decided that it's nice to see people fucking from time to time, but not nearly as much as I like fucking my wife. I've seen it, but overall, it doesn't really interest me a fraction as much as real life.

The only thing my parents had was a book called "Sex.....Methods and Manners". It was so clinical that It was more ewwwww, than exciting. It was in our bookshelf, probably my non communicative parents feeble attempt at sex education. There were no pictures, just some dry talk of clitoral stimulation etc......
Then when babysitting I saw some Playboys.....60's playboys, no pussy, fetching poses.....I thought they were quite beautiful, and sexy. After I lost my own viginity I would buy the occasional Oui, but porn seemed fairly boring. I did enjoy reading the letters in Playboy though, they were pretty cute sometimes! Hard core porn is pretty much a turn off to me though....while it might not be true, I always imagine the women involved are in bad situations in their lives and are being suckered into, manipulated or forced into posing for the photographs. Voyueristic sex seems boring to me, but then masturbation is boring too. If I'm in the mood for sex, I have a husband who is more than delighted to play around with me, later, in the night....I can wait. When I came here, it was just through a straight google of "message boards". (I can't remember the exact wording I used) I didn't know there were "naughty pictures", and didn't care. And I admit, I've have never bothered to look when those forums opened up to me.....ho hum... I had so much wild sex in the pre-aids, love the one you're with, free wheeling 70s.....well....I feel pretty satisfied in that department. I have never looked at online porn. (of course, I have "old" hormones....I'd probably be looking and humping the chair arm if I was 22 )I guess we all just develop our habits and stick with them.

I think I was about 8 or 9 and I found a stash of Playboys in my my Mom's cupboard. I don't know if they were her's or her boyfriend's.
At that age I didn't really know what to make of them other than they gave me a hard on. I didn't quite grasp masturbation at the time. By the time I was 12 or 13 I was buying Penthouse Forum from the corner store. I somehow convinced the guy there that I was buying them for my Dad. He never questioned the purchases after that. I had a huge collection of them by the time I moved out of the house at age 18. I think it's not a matter of teens stumbling on porn these days but much younger kids. Aside from that, I have a feeling that many of them will have fewer hangups than we did.

Speaking of babysitting lol I used to babysit for this Asian couple, they had all manner of "how to" books. I was about 15 when I started sitting for them. Being an avid reader whenever I babysit the first thing I'd do is go thru the peoples bookcase, I will never forget the day I found "The Art of Fellatio". I read that book from cover to cover more times than I can remember. I would practice on whatever I could find that had the "shape" lol
I decided then and there I would be the best blow job giver in the history of blow job giving. It was a very defining moment in my sexual life. I saw ever guy as an experiment, a challenge, and I would do it to anyone that would let me lol...even the guys that would swear they couldnt get off from it. hehehe I've never had a failure and I owe it all to that book I think every man in the world should have one really good blow job before he dies.

Internet porn I suppose will never have a measurable impact on sexuality as we know it. Not that it won't impact sexuality, I just don't know that it will be accurately measured due to people not being able to frankly talk about it. And speaking of how porn has changed... Does anyone else remember seeing men in business suits hanging around the shelf in the back of the bookstore during the lunch hour? Before the big bookstore chains, ever little neighborhood seemed to have a shop where there was a certain section in the back where men spent their lunch hours.

When I was 10 or so, there was a big empty lot where a bunch of the neighborhood boys used to ride bikes. We'd cut trails, had jumps, built forts in the middle of clumps of scrub oak. The lot adjoined a golf course, and one day I made $20 from a golfer who had thrown his driver over the fence into the lot. Anyway, one day I came across a beaten and weathered copy of Playboy out there in the lot. It was my first experience of porn, and it was astonishing. I hid it in one of those scrub oak forts, and visited it frequently. I had a buddy who claimed his dad had Penthouses. He never came off any for me, though. |

My parents also had one of those bedside clinical "marriage manuals". Probably given to them by the preacher who married them. In it, at a quite young age, I read that while oral sex can be enjoyable, it should never replace intercourse as the final part of any sexual encounter. As a result of that (and not meeting you maybe?) I have never had an orgasm during a blow job. Had a GF who loved to give oral and she would try for hours but still nothing. Should have found the book for her maybe? LOL My first introduction to "real porn" happened when I was about 9 or 10 years old. My dad was taking flying lessons and when him and the instructor were flying 2 seat aircraft I was left to wander the airport for an hour or two. There were lots of planes left unlocked back in those days (1950's), among them corporate business planes. In these I found quite a few "men's magazines" of the day. |

Ah, the good old days. Let me count the ways...
1)My first memory - probably while in elementary school - we visited a family friend who had grown children so we had nobody to play with. This led to snooping in their basement and I found some cheap porn mag. I remember clearly that all the women's photos had yellow stars printed over their vaginas. Somehow that made it even dirtier. 2) A friend of mine in elementary school (grade 3 or 4) showed me his dad's collection of Penthouse magazines. They were kept neatly in a box under the basement stairs. That was awesome and I agree with Psycho Dad that the Forum letters where the best part of the magazine. ...and I never looked at the basement stairs the same way again. 3) In grade 6, my best friend and I found a stranger's stash in a plastic bag out in a vacant lot. We pored over those for days. It was the 80's and I still remember this awful girl/girl spread where the two women where completely covered in gold and silver body makeup with neon glam wigs. They also had coloured stripes and lightning bolts painted on them as well. Ick. 4) A couple I babysat for kept a stash of Penthouses under the bathroom sink. My brother who had sat for them before found them first and let me know. After the kids would go to bed, I'd carefully pull them out to read and do my best to return them as if undisturbed. Needless to say, I often volunteered to work for them. 5) Three movie anecdotes: A friend in elementary school showed Zapped, starring Scott Baio at his birthday party. That was a revelation, and I wonder if his parents knew what they had rented. Once my mom took me out to rent a movie (on beta of natch) and I found Hot Dog, the sexy ski movie, mislabeled with a PG rating sticker. I watched that in awe with my finger on the on/off button of the TV in case my mom should walk in. She was pretty suspicious I think. On a sleepover with a friend, we conspired to rend Porky's III. We got his mom to write us a note saying we could rent a Restricted movie, promising it was going to be something innocuous. I can't remember what the decoy movie was, but the plan worked. Again, the thrill of acquiring the porn and not getting caught was as much a thrill as seeing it. I still remember how nervous I was at the cashier. 6) In my teens, I relied on Television. There's a Toronto TV station that has always refrained from censoring movies - though they do bleep out "Mother" and leave the "Fucker". Two of the most explicit I recall where Tomboy and Desert Hearts. Now they even show soft-core late on Friday nights - all as part of basic cable. The other option back then was the Italian channel. While not explicit in those days, there was always the chance of toplessness in their late night films, so I often sneaked downstairs in the middle of the night to hope. 7) With the advent of Pay-per-view cable, another avenue opened up. I could never actually acquire it, but back then it played scrambled, and once you got used to it, you could often make out what was going on. You just have to appreciate your women technicolour green and divided across several frames. I remember that the distortion often went away during the non-sex scenes, so I've always wondered if it was someone's job to sit there and manually scramble the naught bits. Reading this you might think I'm some kind of sex-fiend, but my sex drive and history is pretty average and healthy. I honestly find most porn content kind of boring. This contrast tells me that the real drive is to be in control of our own sexuality. This can't be ignored.

This thread makes me remember an old thread from back in . . . . '02 maybe? - a couple of TFP versions ago - about finding "outdoor porn." It was amazing reading about the number of kids in the 60s and 70s who found porn out in the woods - probably hidden by dads who new the wife would find it if it was hidden in the house! But the percentage of posters who had several stories about "found" porn was absolutely hilarious. I even had a friend who moved into a new (well, new for him) house and found a "fake" wall in the bathroom. Behind it was about 250 porn magazines from the 60s, 70s, and 80's.
Ah . . . good times.

Fresnelly, being about the same age I think we share just about the same experience when it comes to video and TV. Zapped and Porky's were seminal texts for the young boys of our era. But more importantly, CFMT's Italian movies (there is nothing better than breasts that speak Italian) and CITY TV's soft core porn on a Friday night. These were golden moments. I would also like to add that hardcore, even when scrambled is solid material when you are a horny teen.

What show was it? HBO's Real Sex and the Red Shoe Diaries (I knew who David Duchovny was before the X-Files) but I didn't understand the plots or storylines. . I might have been 12 or 13. Also, I remember going to the library and trying to find information on female anatomy, sex and pictures of nudists at that age. I only found one issue of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit edition outside in the woods growing up. And my parents didn't have any porn anywhere in the house. Trust me, I looked everywhere. I never thought to look in other people's houses, but I doubt I would have found anything. I was 16 when my family got dial-up internet. It took me a week to find : http://www.persiankitty.com/ It looks very similar today as it did in 1996. But I had to covertly look at this, just as I would have with any other adult magazine. I kept good pictures I found on floppy disks, which got transferred to CD, and now they are on external hard drives. If we had today's computers and internet back then, I'm not sure if I would consider it missing out on the fun of searching everywhere in the house looking for it. And it would be interesting to see if my parents would take steps to prevent access to it. But, I think it would have been a good thing for it to lose a little bit of its mystery and naughtiness. |

Oh look it's Mr. Peabody: "Astro, lets take the WABAC Machine to discover your first Porn magazine" Mr. Peabody, do we have to? "Come along, I'd bring Sherman but he's gay" POOF! Easter Sunday 1982 I was riding my bike to my friends house. There in the dirt along side the road was a new magazine that someone threw out. It was filled with "Bisexual" Lactating women squirting milk into one anothers mouths; large breasted women; alleged teenage women; Dildo play and I'm sure that I'm leaving something out. "Yes, it turned you into the master debator that you are today." |

Wow...this whole thread is bringing back some memories...
My dad had a file cabinet he thought was locked. In it was dildo's and Super8's that eventually my sister and I snuck into the projector and watched(I was out of highschool by then). My dad had nudie playing cards, stacks of Playboys(eventually I bought him a 3year subscription for Christmas) and a copy of "The Joy of Sex"-apparently never read by my mother. He swore all these things were 'given' to him, once we brought up his 'stash' as adults. HBO and Showtime....good times. Watching the porn channels scrambled-did that just a few years ago until Cablevision got wise. All I could think of was how many boys ran home from school to watch this stuff-sometimes the scrambling wasn't scrambled and there'd be brief fullscreen gynecological shots, so to speak. Up until the 80's or early 90's, maybe, movie theatres showed porn. How many here remember Jamie Gillis? Or actually saw Ron Jeremy in porn flicks? There was a core group of porn stars and the movies were actually quite good sometimes and genuinely comedic. I still like glancing at old-time 'porn' photos and noticing the change of body types used; just by body type of the women, I can tell what decade the photo is from. It's quite fascinating. No, really

Does anyone remember an MTV show called "Undressed"? In my formative teen years, I would stay up late many-a-night watching this show. It was basically about college kids having sex with anyone and everyone. The problem with it was that it showed everything leading up to sex and everything after -- but it didn't display any of the actual sex! This gave me a terrible case of blue balls.
I also remember staying up late and watching the scrambled porn channel. Once I found the Spice network, I never looked back. Like others have said, there was a lot of scramblage and weird colors. Sometimes I couldn't tell if I was masturbating to a man or a woman! But I think the mystery and the secrecy made the experience all the hotter. |

We had a channel here back in the early 80's that would show movies with names like "Hot Bubble Gum" after midnite....I know there were others but that one always sticks out in my head

I don't know how old I was when I found a Scope in my parents' bathroom - I must've been 12 or 13. While I didn't know whose it was or why it was there, I had a distinct feeling I was not supposed to be looking at it.
Further investigation led to the discovery of a plethora of 'adult' magazines and books, . I obviously had to wait till everyone was out of the house (it's amazing how many excuses you can think of not to go to Gran's house - and to look at porn no less!). There were times where I'd sneak into their room while they were sleeping to steal a mag - one from the middle of the pile in case he checked - and hide it under the bed or between my clothes. I always assumed the porn belonged to my father, but I often wondered whether my mother knew about it. She didn't strike me then (nor does she now) as someone who would look at that type of thing. The fact that he might've been hiding it from her too made it all the more thrilling. On to the discovery of his video collection - not vast by any means, but there was more than enough to a young man busy. He still has some Beta tapes that I've never seen due to our Beta adaptor breaking. 'Twas the video that was my downfall. My mom caught me one night when they came home early from somewhere and I had the volume up thinking I was going to be alone for the next hour. That look of disappointment on her face...well it made my hard-on disappear right quick! Quote:

My first run into porn was at a friend of my dad's he had a junk yard and my dad and I would go there and he would spend his time talking with him and I would rummage around. I knew right where he kept his mags and would grab one and go out into the yard and hide in one of the cars and page through it right up till we had to go. He usually had hustler or penthouse back then. needless to say i would always ask if I could go along

I'm 27 now, so the internet was just getting going by the time I was a teenager. I never dreamed of looking up porn on the internet, I guess, but I had become an evangelical at 14. That had a lot to do with it.
However, I was a filthy little 8-12 year old. I may have been sexually dead by my teens, but I LOVED dirty things when I was really young... and porn had nothing to do with it. I had a very corrupting girl friend down the street, and we would pseudo-masturbate when spending the night at each other's houses... no porn, but we built a fort out of boxes upstairs that had all kinds of sexual references taped on the walls (my dad found it one day and I got in major trouble). She said she had walked in on her parents having sex all the time, going down on each other, etc... that gave us plenty of inspiration. We also conducted "sex lessons" in my 2 acres of forested backyard, inviting the neighborhood boys over to lay on the ground and squirm on top of them, fully clothed. We were 8!! My girl friend and I made out once, too (again, age 8), though we thought it was gross about 2 milliseconds after our tongues touched. And I discovered erotic literature in the form of the Clan of the Cave Bear books, can you believe it? My dad had the whole series, and I thought he just liked reading about neanderthals until I opened one and found bookmarks at the steamy sections. My friends and I would sit around and read those sections all the time, when the parents weren't home (up till I was 11 or 12). That was the only sexual reading material I ever found in our house, though my aunt had "The Joy of Sex" at her place and I checked it out every time she went to the bathroom! Oh yeah, also right up until I became a Christian, I had an creepy uncle who gave me Leisure Suit Larry games from Sierra... anyone else have those? I learned about all kinds of things from that game, until my dad found out about it and I had to stop (also that whole Christian thing made me banish it all voluntarily). Talk about an adult game!! I had no idea.

Kids today are comparatively inured to all sorts of things I considered taboo. Whether this is good or bad is up in the air. A few years ago I might have said good, but today, I don't know. /thinking fondly of the Playboy bunnies with panties on, all of a sudden...

well, let me think here... Oh yes, my first glimps at neeked girls. In fourth grade, animal house just came out in theaters, that was my first look at boobies. I did find my older brothers stacks of playboys and penthouses (loved the forum)! I did stumble upon a OUI and I really really liked it! I found a whole stack of Playboys and penthouses, and man did I go through those things! I think I was 11 or 12 at the time. I had so many under my mattress. Good times good times!

Although I'm sure he had them, my Pentecostal mother would have thrown a fit if she'd ever found porn in our house from my father.
I grew up in a near pornless environment until I was about 13. I was a total bookworm, easily reading 5 paperbacks a week. You'd be amazed how no one ever looks at what kids are reading. It's just a book, right? How bad could something called The Story of O be? Or this Delta of Venus thing. Look, the boy has another oen of those Anne Roquelare books. Must be another poet like that Rimbaud fellow. I know the librarian knew what I was up to. The looks that woman gave me were downright accusatory, but I think she was too embarrassed to say anything. To this day I think that's why I like erotica better than almost anything else. I wish I could find more audio porn. Women reading erotica is awesome.

I was probably 9 or 10 when I found my dad's books of Penthouse Letters in his nightstand. Then when I was 11-12 I discovered my mother's boxes of romance novels. Between the two of these sources, my porn needs were satisfied as an adolescent. Occasionally there were magazines with pictures, but generally I've always preferred erotica.
With the rise of the Internet, and my knowledge of computers being superior than my father's, I discovered erotica on the Web. When we first had the Internet, they would download onto the computer as a temporary text file when my father browsed sites. So I would search for these .txt files, hide them in a folder of my own, and enjoy them at my own leisure. My dad has an enormous collection of porn. My brother always used to get into my dad's DVDs. He finally got busted for it, though. Dad said, "Stop going into my closet." Brother said, "Oh, I was just getting some socks." Dad said, "There are no socks on the top shelf." So you could say I was between both, the old and the new, in discovering porn. I think today's teens aren't really missing out on anything. I know the variety of internet porn was certainly a surprise when I first found it.

Thanks for the mammories
I don't know if I'd have thought of it again if not for this thread. My first was the 25th anniversary Playboy with Candy Loving. That kept me going for a few years. I also bought the Sports Illustrated year in sports issue for a picture of Cheryl Tiggs in a white fishnet one piece. I could not get away with buying the full blow swimsuit issue.
I remember staying up late ready to jump out of my skin surfing the channels for somthing, anything. A little clevage even. I watched that whole Rachel Welch cavewoman movie just waiting waiting waiting for that top she was wearing to fall off. The net now makes it so easy to see anything. It makes me wonder what expecations will be for teenagers when they start having sex. I am lucky that my sex life is better than any thing I could find online. And were always finding the outdoor porn too |
