Fun Dates

I just met a few cool girls. This is kind of a new experience for me, because I never really date girls, we just always end up together somehow. I'm pretty tired of that, and I want this summer to be different, so I'm gonna throw out some ideas for fun dates, and hopefully you guys will chip in some too. Feel free to critique if you think they suck.

Idea #1: Find out what type of music we have in common, and then go to a music shop that gives lessons and learn to play a song from that band or genre on the electric guitar. This goes for other artistic kinds of stuff as well.

Idea #2: Go hiking somewhere, find a nice spot near some water or a good view, and have a friend leave a romantic picnic lunch in a hidden in a cooler or basket at a good spot to stop. When you get to the spot, act 'suprised'.

Well, those are my two, let's see if we can get a few more on the list.

Climbing walls are fun

Take date to a field and throw around a frisbee, work up appetite for lunch.

Museums (they're more fun than you think...)

that's a really cool idea, but unless you both already know how to play a bit, it's kinda unrealistic. :(

seeing local bands is always a good date, although might be too loud to really talk much.

And the problem is?
Enjoying an experience like that is fun, the real talking is done after the show, like did you see all those ten year olds smoking pot behind us, or when the lead singer did this or that. Least that's how conversations have gone after my fiancee and I have gone to shows.

Some other ideas, typical, but you do get to know the girl/guy a bit better is go out to a mall, don't really take any money, because that's bad, and you might have to carry tons of stuff which isn't fun. Just go into stores, and enjoy the time together. Dunno if you are trying to stray from the typical things though.

Another idea, spend a night playing a board game with her parents and her, if they like you, or your parents and her, if they like her. It's quite cheap, and if you aren't to competitive, it can be some interesting fun. This also highly depends on the age of the other person and where they are living.

Slims 06-10-2003 12:33 PM

Hide and go seek

Go to the animal shelter!!!! Just make sure it is a no kill shelter if you dont want her to leave in tears.

HockeyGuy 06-10-2003 04:07 PM

Hiking is a great thing to do with the lady.. ti's great. Also other outdoor activities like rollerblading and such i recommend!

Plummie 06-10-2003 05:14 PM

Go-Karts!

beerman 06-11-2003 09:01 AM

Try children's sporting events like little league or midget football. Lots of time to talk, and its fun to pick a favorite team and cheer excessivley. If your team wins, you can always go up and ask for autographs.

Skettios 06-11-2003 11:46 PM

Thanks for some good ideas.

I'm in the process of going on a few dates with this art student that I met at the bar last saturday. I called her tuesday, I was told that she was busy (she gave me a decent excuse dealing with a hardship in a class that I have taken). My problem now is that I'm being given two roads of advice.

The first is to treat her like I would a dude that is a friend of mine, until I'm getting laid. Invite her to the same shit that I would any dude friend of mine.

The other is that I should invite her to some cool date shit, and make sure she knows that I am very interested in her.

I don't know the best way to proceed because I don't feel like I can trust my instincts (go on sweet dates), I always seem to fuck it up somehow. What do you guys think I should do?

Mael 06-11-2003 11:59 PM

take her on a sweet date. let her know your interested, because it's even harder to do that once you become buddies with her. and once your buddies, if she starts dating someone else, do you really want to have to see that?

chavos 06-11-2003 11:59 PM

personal fav would have to be ice skating...especially if you're more skilled than she is-allows for you to play "hero" and catch her if she starts to take a slide. That, or let her fall and then laugh. All depends on how the date's going.

I could list off a bunch more i've had good luck with, but most of the time it's about matching her and my intrests-and i'm a pretty nerdy guy, and so its stuff like art museums, theater, all that "culture" stuff.

dimbulb 06-12-2003 12:08 PM

Going for a walk near any sort of body of water is good. There's nothing like having a nice long walk next to a river/beach/waterfall/gorge......

my SA and myself are both foodies, check out local eating joints that you've both never tried before.

bondagegirl 06-12-2003 01:16 PM

I second the museum idea! Find a really odd or different exhibit, you'll have a lot to talk about. that pinic idea you had was super cute! maybe once you've had a couple dates and really like the girl though...

Washington 06-13-2003 10:23 AM

For us kids who are 18-21, is the guy suposed to pay (for the gocarts/food/movies/etc? I read online that its best do split it down the middle, but i dunno..i dont want to seem cheap...but I also dont want to be her bitch.

??

bondagegirl 06-13-2003 08:21 PM

hey washington, what you do is offer to pay, If you want to, and then see what her reaction is, and if she argues with you then just split it... Every woman is different.

pangavan 06-13-2003 08:51 PM

Check out the local galleries or maybe an art festival nearby. Also a street carnival,(ethnic pride, religious festival, small town homedays), can be fun. They ussually have carnie rides, midway food, and music

Peetster 06-25-2003 03:37 PM

Bondagegirl said it better than I could about paying.

Your goal here is to explore mutual interests, things you both like. I always took a girl to the Zoo at some point. I love animals, and if she was ho-hum then I knew it wouldn't ever work out.

ninjasmurf 06-25-2003 11:31 PM

uhhh...bowling...

yeah, sounds terrible...but...

just play up the irony. depends on the girl.

you'd be suprised how many flirting opportunities bowling presents, especially if you both suck, and if you both are into the zaniness.

and how come nobody has said the zoo? the zoo is great. i like animal shelter too, but it seems a little not so casual for when you're just starting to date.

roller skating. see bowling.

i8one2 06-26-2003 06:26 PM

Coffee and a nice park at dusk in the city, then go to nice small quaint little cafe and enjoy each others company for a while.

89transam 06-26-2003 10:53 PM

Some good ideas...

Some of them cost money though...which is a definate down side.

Lets hear some of those Free dates :D

erion 06-27-2003 07:59 AM

Lots of museums have a "pay what you feel like paying" day.

These were some of the most fun dates my wife and I had.

Sometimes we go to a park or restaurant and just watch the people. This has led to some very interesting converstaions and stories. The one about "cut and style Barbie" from a bad haircut has got to be one of my favorites.

asudevil83 06-29-2003 07:54 PM

i think all of these ideas are pretty good. i've got pretty big hurdle to leap with many of them though. summer time in AZ is hella hot. anything outdoors is almost out of the question except swimming or anything related to cooling off outside.

the museum idea is something that i may have to look into though. paddle boating at dusk is a pretty good idea. lots of room for talking, pretty romantic, and the distractions arent there.

if your just looking to talk though, something that i was thinking about trying is just driving out at night. driving up and out of the city and just finding a nice spot to look at the stars. just make sure you know i little bit about what's out there, just to impress her a bit.

Janie 06-30-2003 01:35 PM

I'm a sucker for the second one. Other than that, anything that makes you feel like a kid again is top notch. It'll usually get the girls to open up lots, and then you're golden.

sailor 07-22-2003 01:46 PM

Whatever you do, dont let it turn into a friendship rather than a relationship (assuming a relationship is what you are after). Its quite difficult (usually) to kick it up a notch if it becomes a friendship rather than something more serious.

Donkeypuncher 07-22-2003 02:16 PM

Hiking is always good. Apart from the picnic thing, which is a nice romantic twist, pick up a book about hiking in your area and find some interesting destinations... learn something about the place you're going to. example: there's an old railway/lodge in the mountains above Pasadena, where I live, and most people in L.A. have no idea it's even there (it was considered one of the great engineering wonders of the world when it was in operation, around the previous turn of the century). It's a fun destination for dates, friends, whatever...

Bowling actually seems to be picking up steam as a thing to do...

I've rented boats and canoed through the canals of the Venice area here in L.A. on a date.

Museums, art galleries, observatories.

I've gone to the beach on a date and we ended up in a pick-up game of beach volleyball with complete strangers - had a blast and ended up good and tired so we were relaxed with a couple of beers at a nearby pub afterwards. Nice atmosphere...

A horse track is always a fun date. One near here does regular microbrew festivals (come to think of it, it was at the last one that I saw Chris McCarran take the fall that ended his career) where they set up a giant tent on the infield and all the local breweries are there with samples and there's grilled food available. A local radio station always has a stage with live music going, plus there's betting on the ponies. You don't have to get crazy with it (dollar bets are more than acceptable) and if it's the first time for both of you, it's fun. If you've done it and she never has, you have something you can teach her.

It's summer; there's always music festivals, "taste of" thangs, etc.

Comedy clubs always work great

Go watch a parade. Guaranteed to amuse and give you something to talk about.

One of the best dates I ever had was meeting someone for breakfast (second meeting) and afterwards, we drive to a nearby park and just walked around, talking. We ended up swinging on the swings in the children's playground, talking at length. It was fun and playful.

A lot of it is gauging what sort of woman she is and making a plan based on that but even then, anyone can surprise you.

agreed on the friendship thing - if she doesn't know for sure that you like her "that way" she'll move on and you may never get it back.

Washington,
re: paying - always offer to pay. As BD said, she may or may not offer to split it with you and you go from there. Don't worry about "being her bitch." Just recognize it if you're being taken advantage of and move on; she's not for you.

baudot 07-22-2003 02:24 PM

This one is city specific, but: The St.Louis City Museum, after hours.

It's fantastic. First off, the entire thing is a giant jungle-gym. You can take the staircases or the slides. You can climb around in giant hamster-mazes. There are no shortage of dark alcoves to dissapear down for a smooch, if things are going well.

Upstairs, there's a little theatre (Beatnik Bob's) that's usually showing something good. Last 2 times I checked it was Blazing Saddles and Pulp Fiction.

Downstairs, there's a pub. It's not advertised, only word of mouth. Result: the crowd that shows up better. It's the kind of place where a stranger might come up and ask you to join him for a few rounds on the guitars.

good call! I'm filing that one away permanently in the "ideas" folder...

DrJekyll 07-23-2003 06:19 AM

These are all great ideas, but they're mostly things that you can do in a large city. Anything else you guys can think of that you can do in a smaller town?

The best thing that I can come up with is mini-golf, but the only course kind of sucks, and it's really such a good date that it's a shame to spoil it on the first one.

A dinner and a movie are really the most "informal", but movies are generally a bad idea that early into the game.

Taliesin 07-23-2003 06:36 AM

Buy a disposable camera. Go around town taking shots of things together then put the camera in for one hour processing. Pick up the film and look at the shots over dinner.

The bonus is that you've always got something to talk about in case of awkward silences.

abelak 07-23-2003 06:48 AM

I think nothing beats packing a nice lunch and driving out to the country, stopping in a secluded spot and having a picnic. She'll be impressed with your sensitivity and start off the relationship on a good footing! Goodluck.

Tester123 07-23-2003 10:59 AM

a problem with a lotta these is introducing them, it's easier to say 'wanna go to the movies?" than say wanna get a camera and spend the afternoon in town (even though its better..) sounds awkward.

Not at all! The question is, "would you like to go out with me?" After that, settle on day and time and you're good to go.

Most women that I've known are genuinely impressed with a guy who can plan things on their own and the more unique, the better. It's pretty rare that I've had to submit an itinerary unless there was a specific reason to. Doing something like this, as a surprise, is far better than telling her in advance...

Like Nike says... just do it. =)

Skettios 07-23-2003 10:53 PM

Mael, if she doesn't know how to play, then we aren't getting to a second date, I hope you all follow my standard on that one!

chavos, ice skating is cool, playing the hero is cooler, and museums get a bad rap, but I hear chicks dig em!

dimbulb, suggestion definitely considered, as a big guy though, I don't need any extra excuse to pack on pounds!

Washington, for sure split it man! If she can't haul her weight than you better get used to renting movies!

bondagegirl, if there were more classy girls like you around, then I wouldn't have to go through so much trouble to entertain them. I mean, you don't seem to me, like the type that gets bored easily.

pangavan, sometimes it's fun to just relax with some people nearby, and sometimes it's fun to get a little sexy with some people watching, good suggestion!

Peetster, for sure bro, It's been a long time since I've had a pet, but I know I'll want one, hopefully I'll never have to choose between a girlfriend and a jack russell.

ninjasmurf, no kidding dude, ain't nothing sexier than 'teaching' a girl how to bowl. When I lived in WA, this girl Mandy need so much 'instruction' that I was embarassed, still, she and I are both glad that I'm such a patient 'teacher'... lol...

i8one2, that's a good idea, but if you've got that good of conversation going on already, then you don't need any of the advice here bro!

89transam, the less money out of my pocket the happier I am!

erion, airports are good for watching people, My mom and I did that before Dogma made it popular.

asudevil83, I like the idea of driving out in the country, I plan on doing a lot of that when I move back to Anthem, hopefully a few of the girls from the Candy Store will want to go with me!

Janie, thanks for the support, It's been awhile since I've been in BC, but I don't remember ever being bored there, I mean, the strip, the beach, and if I'm real wasted Davie street!

Donkeypuncher, dude I love your nick, I'm not sure if donkey punching falls into the category of fun dates, Good suggestions though bro.

baudot, East St. Louis? Is there any other St Louis (Homer Simpson) I'll have to remember the Museum if I ever head out that way.

DrJekyll, nothing wrong with mini golf man, how do you convert 10 over par to a hole in one?

Taliesin, that's a great idea, it would give you something to talk about right?

Tester123, these date ideas are for girls who are already into you right? if they aren't then why waste the effort? So I for one and in total agreeance with you, with that qualification.

Unfortunately, it seems that my luck with women has reached an all time low. I'm a little bummed by this, but not overly anxious, as I've got some things going on in the future that will conterdict any bad karma I'm experiencing now. Anyway, please keep this thread alive with your ideas, and hopefully we'll all benefit.

As with most threads I start on TFP, I wish we were all hanging out in person, I would definitely buy a few rounds, but for now, thank you for participating, I truly appreciate it. And most importantly have fun!!!

wario 07-23-2003 11:19 PM

Try a "theme date" if there's really nothing interesting around. You can make the slightly mundane dates a bit more interesting that way. Instead of plain old "Dinner and Movie" you can have "Pirate Night" where you go eat at Long John Silver's and then go see Pirates of the Carribbean. And of course keep the theme in the details of the evening. Speak with "yarrr"s and such. It's dorky, yeah, but it's also fun. You can even go all out and wear a hat and eye patch, listen to pirate music in the car, stuff like that.

Skettios 07-24-2003 10:26 AM

Wario, that's hilarious. If I ever meet a girl that will put up with Pirate Night, I'm probably gonna be buying her a big rock.

billme 07-24-2003 01:12 PM

that pirate idea is sweet, yeah im 18 and lookin for some good suggestions, money is not object, i just wanna have a good time

billme 07-24-2003 01:13 PM

*money is no object

moonman 07-24-2003 02:44 PM

i'm so using the them idea this weekend.. :) thanks!

ratbastid 07-24-2003 05:59 PM

Now that I'm all married and settled down and old, I don't "date" much. A hot night for me is usually a hot night in, if you catch my drift.

All the same:

maximus 07-24-2003 07:21 PM

yarr, pirate night sounds like fun!

i would also buy a few rounds if we were all together, these ideas are great. i really like the idea of doing something out of the ordinary that you will both remember. if it doesnt work out, at least you will both have a story to tell.

the most exciting first date i have had was taking this girl to a reel big fish/spring heeled jack concert. we both had a blast, and went on to date for about a year. we also went on to see spring heeled jack many other times, she never really liked that kind of music before, and i turned her on to it, so an original date can work out.

side note: anyone who has not heard of spring heeled jack should definately check them out. thier cds are oop because they broke up a few years back, but you can definately find them on kazaa. enjoy
