Around here there is this sort of art studio place where you can buy different kinds of ceramic things (flower pots, little statues, and other assorted silly things). So you and your date each buy something, and then paint it there in the studio. Pretty unique date thing.. It's on my list of possible things to do next time I go on a date.

mental note: I use the word "thing" too much.

perhaps this is unique to the towns of the northeast, but...

my girlfriend and i like to escape the major metropolitan areas and hit a town or two up north and go window shopping. the air is fresher, the trees are greener, the sun is brighter; certainly a much more sensual experience than a trip to the mall. as a first date, this opens up many conversation possibilities: "i think you'd look great in that...," "i've always wanted one of these...," "i love this author!" and so on and so forth.

The TB was your idea of a fun date?

Marburg 07-28-2003 11:29 PM

This is going to sound really foolish, but I feel obligated to share my experience.

Have a picnic in a hay barn - especially one that has a loft. It's such an excellant atmostphere; with all the barn cats and puppies and such.
Of course the abundant hay leads to wresting around, which of course leads to... fun.

Anyway - very few people have access to a barn, but all your country bumpkins that feel trapped all the way out there - kick ass date!

*swoons over memories*

Actually that sounds like quite a bit of fun. I'll have to look into that.

Free dates would be the out_in_the_open ones ..

motdakasha 07-29-2003 02:05 PM

I hate when men invite me to go somewhere that I can't afford to pay even 50-50, especially when they offer to pay for the whole thing. This is just me, but I hate being put in this position. I much prefer free dates because not only are they, well, free, but they require men to be more creative and fun.

Some of my ideas:
Urban spelunking
Seeing who can spot out the most animals (quantity or variety) at an open space preserve
Bicycling either around town, or on trails at parks
Hang out with transients (to many, being talked to or smiled at is worth more than some change)
Chat on a kid's playground after dark
Seeing free art galleries and museums (oftentimes the ones on college campuses are free and welcome visitors, sometimes coffee shops have galleries)
Going to a beach with tidepools to check out seacreatures (just don't touch them)
Get a phonebook and write letters to random people in it
Talk to regulars at a coffee shop
Go into a pet store that sells grains and feel the different kinds (you know, like Amelie does. this is my favorite pastime!)
Go to a park and feed the ducks or pigeons or doves with bread crumbs (this is actually not good for them, but it's fun)
Go to a Natural History Museum (often in state or national parks)
Spy on people at a nude beach (being nude is optional)
Go to a mall and try all the free food samples
Some beaches allow campfires and even staying overnight..

Sounds suspiciously like exploring sewers...which I don't think most girls would go for.

Also, you can make kites from scratch and see whose flies better.

baudot, East St. Louis? Is there any other St Louis (Homer Simpson) I'll have to remember the Museum if I ever head out that way.

There's East St.Louis and St.Louis proper. East St.L is on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river. St.Louis (main) is on the Missouri side. East St.Louis got a bad rap decades ago when a handful of travelling salesmen got murdered there, and it's reputation has never recovered. Pity, since it's one of the birthplaces of The Blues as a musical genre. Supposedly, there are many good hip-hop clubs there now. But, no one wants to go. It's still 'too dangerous.'

I know a LOT of girls who would be up for pirate night. Most of my female friends were huge swashbuckling fanatics even before the recent movie. (They now talk about how much they want to see J. Depp and O. Bloom get busy together.)

The city museum is in downtown St Louis. (Western side, but near the river.)

D.Punch: You're also a St.Louisian?

Date ideas for more cities:

Chicago: Go see the theatre group "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind." 30 Plays in 60 Minutes!

New York: See the Big Apple Circus together. If they're on tour: Go to the guggenheim, both of you wearing fake mustaches. Be as pretentious as possible.

L.A.: Sushi dinner at Crazy Tokyo. Or: beachfront strolling on Venice Beach. (I'd say do both, but with the traffic it's a 45 minute drive between the two.)

New Orleans: The cheap, cheezy back of the French Quarter. Haggle over rose colored sunglasses and hot sauce. Follow with peoplewatching at Cafe Du Monde.

SF/Bay Area: Head up to Berkeley on the BART. Do a tour of the sidewalks and compete to see who can find the most amusing freaks. Stop at Crepes A-Go-Go for snacks, or the Cambodiana.

Atlanta: Go to the Buford Farmers Market. Compete by each challenging the other to cook your upcoming dinner with an ingredient that neither of you have ever seen before. Allow each other to research on your home DSL what the hell that veggie you just discovered IS before cooking.

Austin: Yoga and vegan dinner at Casa De Luz (sp.).

Tokyo: Take her to your favorite noodle stand. See who can slurp more loudly.

Kyoto: Be a tourist. See the shrines. There's no way you've seen them all already. Go to the rock gardens. Try and out0zen each other.

Bangkok: Hit the bazaars on the uptown riverside. Buy whatever fruit is in season. Invent a game governing how it must be eaten. (Remember: cook or peel first unless you want to get very very sick.)

Berlin: Find parts of east berlin that haven't been 'modernized' yet. Discover a good hole in the wall that you can pride yourself on having known for years before it was popular, together. OR: Take a walk via the parks. Take the S-Bahn back when you get tired.
