just another sex scare

So, I know these things seem to pop up all the time and I hate being another paranoid soul looking for comfort, but this seems weirder than I'm usually prepared for.

my girlfriend and I were having sex (with condoms) for about a month before I left for vacation, and haven't for 2 months since the last time, which happened to be the day she had one of those wonderful monthly events that makes guys sleep better at night. And a month after that, another, both quite normal.

However, this month she's a few days late and spotty. The internet has told me that it is possible to have periods while actually pregnant, but I guess what I'd like to know is how likely this is. Needless to say, I'm worried enough that I looked for a nice, middle-of-nowhere chatroom to talk about it, because it's a scary subject. We've talked about this sort of thing ahead of time, and we're on the same page about what we'd both do and what we need to do next, but I'm a little worried none the less. I've done my best to reassure her that everything is fine (altho she's going to the doctor tomorrow anyway, in case it's a signal of something else)...but I'm the end of the line, and I guess I don't have anyone to pat me on the back and say the same thing. Little help?

Stress can effect a womans menstral times.

Yes it is possible and it does happen that way some times. A friend of my mothers bled for all 9 months she was pregnant and her tests never showed a positive result either until she had a blood test at 6 months along.

It boils down to I guess if we have sex we have to worry about making babies.

Is she on the pill as well? Never hurts to double up. (Just in case she isnt pregnant for future ref)

There are a few things about this story that, before it's all cleared up and behind me, are going to drive me crazy. The first is that she was not on the pill, and claimed that spermicide gave her irritation, so neither were used, which was a first for me. The other thing that concerns me is that, being a realist, there may have been a little risk involved before actually having sex, as in before the condom was actually found and used. Not a lot, but enough to make a guy worry.

So, yeah, there are a handful of things I would love! to be able to change to make myself a little more confident right now. we were being careful about the timing of things, so the risk was in "safe"-ish times..though I know not to take that too seriously...but I have been propping myself up mostly on the fact that her period was not just a little bleeding, as I have heard can happen for the entire time, but two substantial periods. sorry, dear reader, if you didn't want the details. From everything they taught me in school, doesn't pregnancy not work that way?

...I guess we'll find out. At the very least, I've learned a whole lot from this...I just hope God gives me a chance to put my new information to good use. I'll look back on myself now as being young and stupid whatever happens, but I hope it works out.

although, I'm happy to add, there are plenty of reasons her cycle might be off. There has been lots of stress and flying and new foods and all sorts of things, so I have my fingers crossed!

I also know a girl that never had a period, she just had a bad nosebleed every month.... good luck explaining that one!

But seriously, yes it could happen, it has happened in the past and likely will again in the future. Insist that if she doesnt participate in birth control no more nookie!

Believe me, these past few days have made us both true believers, I don't think either one of us would possibly dream of it anymore. (Why, though, do we only seem to learn from mistakes?)

Women can't have an actual period during pregnancy. During that time they can have bleeding but it's more spotting than anything. When they have their period, they shed the lining of the uterus that has built up and hormone levels drop. If she's pregnant and has bleeding that is more than spotting, she needs to get to the doctor ASAP.

See, that's what I thought. So it seems to make sense that if it was actually a period then pregnancy isn't a possibility. Of course, I suppose it's hard to tell the difference between substantial bleeding and a period? I'm not quite an expert here, at any rate. And she's getting to the doctor ASAP, don't worry! Also, she hasn't shown any other symptoms of pregnancy besides this recent lateness and spotting...if she really were 2 months into it, wouldn't there be other signs?

(I can't wait until I can post saying everything turned out fine, I think I'm going to go to sleep so that moment arrives sooner)

Lets not forget to take into consideration the thickness of a lining. Some women produce a thin lining. My uterine linings were freakishly thick. What most women would consider bleeding to death was closer to spotting for me. Every woman is different and one can not group them all together and expect anything to stick. Check out the birth control threads and the individual womans reactions. Dont take my word for it.

Out of the woods, into the thicket

Not pregnant! Gotta love those words (at this point in our lives). Unfortunately, now she doesn't know why her body is acting so strangely, and the doctor told her to wait a month before he tried to figure it out any more.

But we'll cross those bridges when we get to them. Nothing like a little brush with fear to wake one up, ay? It's super safe from now on!
