Lube comparison

Ok, after reading various posts in the forum it has come to my attention that many people prefer astroglide to ky.

Because of this I went out and bought a small bottle of it because my gf has trouble keeping wet and tears easily. We have used KY before but my gf did not like the way it felt.

So my question is, what is the real difference between the two kinds of lube?
I can already tell just by looking at it that Astroglide is about as thin as water while KY is like a jelly. Is that the only real difference or is there something else?

And since Astroglide is so much thinner, what is the best way to apply it for use, with KY I can just kind of smear it all over Bob, but the Astroglide seems to thin for that, so any suggestions?

And another thing, are there any generic form of Astroglide that little 2.5 oz bottle cost 6 bucks at Walmart.

Amano 09-29-2004 11:10 PM

I don't have a lot of experience using many different types of lubes, but I can tell you a small amount of Astroglide goes a LONG way. Don't let its "thin-ness" deceive you. Perhaps that's why it's so expensive.

Kontjesman 09-30-2004 05:14 AM

Last week I had my first experience with "lube", and I must say I really didn't like it. Most of thetime when my girly and I want to have sex, I don't have much problems getting her wet. If so, I give her some oral pleasure and of we go. But a few weeks ago she bought a "pleasure box" with some attributes, including this lube. Like u just mentioned : it looks very much like wather, so I thought we would need plenty, but boy do I was wrong. Neither of us even liked it a bit, although not whilst having sex. Foreplay was ok, cause u really can stimulate all surrounding areas without she's being very wet ;)

ratbastid 09-30-2004 05:47 AM

I'm not a big fan of Astroglide, frankly. It's a little too thin, which means it's messy, hard to apply, and hard to keep in place. You end up with Astroglide all over. It also goes sticky too quickly--any water-based lube is going to evaporate and get sticky, but Astroglide seems to do that very fast.

My current fave is called ID-Glide, and we bought a bottle of it from adamandeve.com. It's thicker than Astroglide (but still a liquid--nowhere near as stiff as KY) and stays slick for a long time.

ID-Glide is what I've used for a while. I like it a lot as well. That new KY-Warming Liquid is pretty nice as well. The ID is thicker though, so better for anal and the like, although I haven't been lucky enough to get any anal for almost three years :|

Shizukana 09-30-2004 11:37 AM

Don't use KY jelly... use KY liquid. ;) Much better, less gooey, and feels good.

Eros is also good stuff, and it's still safe for condoms too - it's silicon based. Just be careful with it - a few drops goes a VERY long way, it's very expensive but a bottle will last you a long long time.

Kitenn Kaboodle 09-30-2004 11:43 AM

I was incredibly disappointed by the Ky-warming Jelly, didn't seem to do anything at all :( Maybe I'm broken hah. I really enjoy astroglide for handjobs, seems like you don't need to apply it over and over again like you do with the K-Y liquid. It definately has to be use sparsely for actual sex though. I bet it would be awesome for anal though.

Kitenn Kaboodle 09-30-2004 11:44 AM

oops I did a double

MSD 10-01-2004 09:05 AM

Dude, did you just refer to your penis as "Bob"?

robodog 10-01-2004 01:06 PM

ID-Glide is my favorite water based lube, and my wife enjoys the fact that it comes in yummy flavors. If you aren't using latex condoms then the best lubes are silicon based ones. They don't dry out, don't get sticky, and generally stay in place. The downside is they are hard to get off of stuff since they are hydrophobic (water repellant).

Neptune 10-02-2004 10:15 PM

I use Eros.
Ky is way too thick and gets sticky and uncomfortable during extended lovemaking sessions ;)

iccky 10-03-2004 04:42 PM

Agreed, Eros is the best .

Girlfriend and I got a bottle of ID glide, just to try something new, but we didn't even use it all up before going back to the good stuff.

 He totally did. I'm glad someone else picked up on that. I was getting to the bottom of the comments and hadn't read a single post on Bob.

Yes I did. it's actually an acronym. Big On Boobies. I love breasts and so does my penis, therefore I call him Bob.

The Lube Thread

Okay, I searched the archives and thought I would start a thread dedicated to the topic of lubes...ie.. preferences, opinions, ect....

anyways to start it off, I have a question regarding lubes.. my girlfriend and I would like to use lube to enhance our sex lives. we have tried astroglide but she thinks it seems to irritate her. So what do you sensitive ladies out there use for lube? I read online that ones with glyciern (sp?) can cause irritation. Can anybody give me some good brand names? I don't like the KY brands as I think they are too thick for our tastes. however I have tried KY Silk-E, which is called a vaginal moisturizer, but she thinks its only for external use. I have also heard of liquid silk... anybody tried that???...

maleficent 05-01-2006 08:44 AM

use the search thread again, and this time respond on one of those threads please..

Martel 05-01-2006 09:02 AM

My favorite (Sage's too) for regular sex is O'My, and we prefer Astroglide gel for anal. The O'My is really soft and smooth and lasts a long time (it feels the most like her natural lubrication) while the Astroglide gel is thicker which is important for anal sex. Both wash off easily with just water which is nice because we've tried plenty of lubes that don't.

buckruss 05-02-2006 08:39 AM

We use 2 lubes of choice, Maximus and Wet Lite. The Maximus is great for any type of sex other then oral (taste is horrible). It is a thicker, and has not caused any irritation. The Ky brand did cause irritation for both of us. Now the Wet Lite is a nice thin lube that great for Vaginal and oral, nice and thin and supper slick, with no bad taste. Both of these lubes last a long time and wash off easily with just water.

ratbastid 05-02-2006 09:37 AM

You use lube for oral? Hunh. I've always found oral sex to be... self-lubricating.

Esen 05-03-2006 02:20 AM

ALways used Astroglide

KInd of Like Hinz is for Ketchup and Helmanns for Mayo

Astroglide has been for Lube

Just make sure you don't mix them up

For us, it's Astroglide usually, and Maximus for anal.

You mean Astrglad, right? It's "Heinz" and "Hellmanns". I generally hate spelling nitpickers, but in this case, it just struck me funny that you misspelled the names while making a point about the ubiquity of those names. Sorry: English Major humor.

Astroglide dries out and gets sticky after not very long. We prefer ID Glide--it stays slick a lot longer, and it's thick enough it doesn't get everywhere.

jusolson00 05-30-2006 01:12 PM

what do you guys prefer for silicon based lubes? and also, when using silicon lubes for vaginal, does it easily wash off with soap and water when done?

Acetylene 05-30-2006 02:47 PM

Silicon based lube does not wash off as easily as waterbased lubes, even with soap and water, but it is the bomb for anal and far outstrips even the best water based lubes performances wise. Whatever you do, don't use Wet.

lindalove 05-30-2006 08:07 PM

Foreplay provides a wonderful natural lube

Saliva works when foreplay isn't possible ....

We also use a generic KY Jelly if needed as well, but haven't used it in a while.

absorbentishe 05-31-2006 05:44 AM

My wife and I have used both in the past. The KY was thick, and when done, didn't feel so good for her, so we tried astro, and another that I can't think of the name. A little astro goes a long way! The feeling is much better for both with astro, just take a little in your hand, and rub it in to where ever, and it lasts a long time.

BTW, when I saw BOB, it reminded me of Battery operated Boyfriend. I used that one once, and everyone thought it was the greatest!

Same here. Not a big fan of Astroglide as it gets sticky very quickly. I'm a fan of KY Gel. Its a little thicker than Astroglide but not as thick as KY Jelly. it seems to work great and last for a long time. I've tried the Warming Liquid but its really thin and watery and doesn't provide that much lubrication. My choice is KY Gel.

dasimulator7 05-31-2006 02:39 PM

What's wrong with Wet?

MageB420666 05-31-2006 05:41 PM

Wow, somebody likes to do searched for really old threads.

Just as an update, I've been using astroglide exclusively since the first time I tried it. Oh, and the gf referred to in the original post is now known as ex-gf. I haven't talked to her in over half a year. Turns out she wasn't nearly as into me as I was into her. I have, however found someone much better for me and am quite happy with her.

P.S.- My penis is still nicknamed Bob.

Glycerin, my friend... The term is Glycerin and you can find out more about it's properties by clicking on this link to find it's Wikipedia definition.

Never heard of Liquid Silk, and compared to most sex lubes KY-Jelly is very thin and doesn't last much.

james t kirk 06-03-2006 10:22 AM

Seemore Butts recommends "Wet Lite"

I figure he otta know.

snowy 06-03-2006 10:37 AM

ID-Glide is my personal fave. It's not as sticky as some lubes with the same sort of thickness. AND I can get free mini-packs of it from the student health center (even though I'm no longer a student :D) which last for MONTHS.

There are also a bunch of flavored lubes out there (go into any sex shop and you'll find a variety of flavors), so if she's not tasting quite as good that time, or you want to be able to do all sorts of things and not have the order matter, that is a good way to go. I happen to like strawberry Motion Lotion. It warms up nicely (haven't tried KY Warming Liquid yet, so I can't make a comparison).

Ample 06-03-2006 12:54 PM

Personally I need a little friction. I hate loob, or at least the kinds the ladies I have been with in the past have used. It just get a little too slick down there and I loose a lot of the feeling. I end up working really hard to cum. I dont know if this is just me or if other men have this problem. Is there a lube thats not as slick as others, or maybe I just use to much.

silvertiger 06-03-2006 01:41 PM

Already been mentioned, but Eros is the best i've seen so far .. not messy and with a little soap cleans right up just fine.

juts remember that if youre doing things in the shower.. either dry up really well before you apply it or apply before you get int he water because it won't sta on if you have water ont he skin before hand.

wife and I swear by the stuff.

Acetylene 06-04-2006 06:05 PM

Eros; it's worth the money. If she's having problems with tearing, you should not be messing around with any waterbased lube. Go straight for the silicone and you will not regret it--it doesn't wear off, doesn't dry, never gets sticky, and actually moisturizes (waterbased gels claim to do this but they lie). This is, if she's not lubricating naturally and you're using the lube as more than just a starter, you really should use the same stuff you'd use for anal, and the pros use eros!
