My Hero....a great man

I would so easily vote this man into the presidency....given the chance

Speaking from the Senate floor, McCain said, "If necessary - and I sincerely hope it is not - I and the co-sponsors of this amendment will seek to add it to every piece of important legislation voted on in the Senate until the will of a substantial bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress prevails. Let no one doubt our determination."

Rekna 11-06-2005 01:30 PM

yeah he would get my vote

Psycho Dad 11-06-2005 01:35 PM

I'd likely vote for him as well. However not so much for the torture ban issue. He would, I believe be a good leader able to draw support across party lines on many important issues. These calls for a torture ban IMHO will be ignored by anyone (CIA or other organization) that would resort to torture anyway.

Etarip 11-06-2005 01:47 PM

I would love to vote for him... I just wish he hadn't kissed Bush's ass these past 6 years and shown some backbone earlier.

alansmithee 11-06-2005 01:54 PM

I would've voted for him in 2000. Not anymore. He's bought far to much into his own hype, and seems more worried about grabbing camera time and appearing to be 'his own man' than he does doing actual good works.

I wouldn't vote for him because he is too liberal and his lack of backbone is evident. He went against Bush when it was the easy thing to do instead of going against him when it was the difficult and right thing to do.

martinguerre 11-06-2005 02:08 PM

vote for national office? probably not. but he does have my sincere appriciation for this commitment to anti-torture initiatives.

Elphaba 11-06-2005 03:04 PM

McCain's at the top of my wish list for 2008, as he was in 2000.

ratbastid 11-06-2005 03:11 PM

You know, with McCain as a Republican nominee, even this Dem holdout would have a hard time choosing my side. I believe him to be a genuinely good man, moderate and principled.

jorgelito 11-06-2005 03:18 PM

I like McCain too - which makes me wonder: Does anyone know of anything bad about him? I had a classmate claim McCain was corrupt in Arizona regarding campaign financess and stuff but he never corroborated his statement with any evidence.

cj2112 11-06-2005 05:34 PM

I like McCain, I might even vote for him...provided that he gives me enough reason too.

politicophile 11-06-2005 07:07 PM

McCain is my first choice for President in 2008. I daresay that we'd be far better off as a country if we had his leadership over the past 5 years in stead of W's. Since McCain himself was a victim of torture when he was a POW, I'm not surprise he's supporting this legislation... What a great American!

Locobot 11-06-2005 08:24 PM

Somehow by being one of oh-so-very-very-few Republicans willing to stand up to the Bush whitehouse McCain lacks backbone? Someone care to explain that? Or is this just TFP politics as usual where we let any accusation fly without challenge?

BTW Dick Cheney fucks sheep, that's right the veep's a sheepfucker. Wooo this feels great!

Yeah, well Harry Reid roasts live babies to feed to his trained attack dogs. Which he then has sex with.

You're right, baseless accusations are fun

How 'bout with a bear.....forced upon you.....when you were just a little girl?
Quote:

........He said that boys from the village took the merchant's daughter places, and word spread that she had many lovers. There were odd tales of her sexual prowess, and they said <b>she had coupled with dogs and men and several of the boys at once.</b> Then to their village came a young samurai, who spotted the girl as all did, and she folded him into her. She took other lovers in the village, which enraged him, but he would not be done with her . . .
The young samurai's mother had the child sold to a brothel, where she swept the floors and oiled the women and watched the secret ways. <b>At age ten the madam put the child in a cage with a bear trained to couple with young girls so the girls would be frigid and not fall in love with their patrons. They fed her through the bars and aroused the bear with a stick when it seemed to lose interest. Groups of men paid to watch. Like other girls who have been trained this way, she learned to handle many men in a single night and her skin turned a milky white.</b>
Stories of this north-country training for prostitutes were apparently well-known among the guests, who made impatient motions for Ueda to continue . . . "Then," Ueda said, "they trained the young whore in all of the finest ways to pleasure men. They gave her wooden penises and taught her how to handle them. They taught her how to sing out in the night and move to finish off her customers more quickly." ..........

The book is about a young Japanese man who runs a remote mountain inn and becomes embroiled in a world of intrigue. "A world of intrigue," in this case, involves:

* a scene of incest between two uncles and their niece;
* a hunter asking his companions if they should fuck a freshly killed deer while it's still warm;
* the description of a prepubescent girl's painted "mound" and pleasing lack of vaginal odor;
* a story about a girl who's kept in a cage and raped by a bear to train her to become a prostitute.

Truth is always stranger than fiction; stranger still....when it is written by the Assistant to the POTUS and Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor to the VPOTUS.

Oh yeah...comments by other posters distracted me....Aside from going out of his way to stand up for Bush after Rove's 2000 campaign dirty tricks propaganda blitz that erased McCain's primary lead almost overnight, McCain's
voting record is abysmally to the right. He has a 13 "score" for progressive voting at this site that tracks and scores all senators' voting records.
http://www.progressivepunch.org/memb...=All&x=25&y=14
Arlen Specter managed a score of 35. McCain represents a state with a governor who is a democrat; he could afford, politically, not to be a total corporatist, if the urge was in him.

Another republican as POTUS is something the country cannot afford again, so soon, especially one with a voting record so far to the right. I agree with roachboy that we have two dominant right wing parties in the U.S., but consider that Kerry scored an 86 on the same site, and that the highest republican progressive score belongs to Lincoln Chaffee (R-RI), with a 41.

McCain would make a good UN ambassador or a replacement for the horror appointment of John Negroponte as Intel Czar....but POTUS.....no way.
There is not true representation of the left in this country in national politics; can't we at least aim for someone who is progressive? We don't have to worry that a progressive president would spend more than the repubs have.

tecoyah 11-07-2005 04:12 AM

While I think we can all agree McCain is not the perfect Cadidate Host, I see no one who actually fits this criteria. And yet....there Will be a president of the United States. Perhaps it is time to drop the dueling gloves and consider who is in the field, and what they Can do for our country. Whoever takes the helm in 2008 will need to be incredibly strong if they intend to Fix what has been done to this country....on so many levels. Personally, I dont give a freakin' rats ass what party they belong to, My criteria involves the ability to lead, and Moral conviction to the things this country once stood for.

Poppinjay 11-07-2005 04:39 AM

I was behind McCain in 2k. He disappointed me severely by allowing Bush to tar him in South Carolina, by refusing to take a stand on the racial history of Bob Jones University and the use of the Dixie battle flag in southern flags - which a plurality of South Carolinians deplore, and then by dropping out of the race.

He's been a man of principles otherwise. The democrats haven't offered, or even have anything on the horizon that looks promising.

Rekna 11-07-2005 09:55 AM

well according to Rove and Bushco Mc'Cain fathered an illegitamate black child.... gotta love the push polling Rove and Bushco did to defeat him in the primaries.

trickyy 11-07-2005 11:29 AM

a lot of mccains progressivepunch shortcomings seem to deal with government programs. well, the country isn't in a very good financial situation at the moment, so maybe it's not that bad to get someone who wants to spend less. also, he is anti-corruption and an pro-environment.

hillary scores well on the pp website, but she hasn't done anything lately besides fundraise. and i doubt she can get enough votes unless bill signs on for VP. biden...ehh. edwards and kerry already had their chance. who else is there?

Locobot 11-07-2005 03:49 PM

McCain has a brown baby! That's right, he's white BUT HIS BABY IS BROWN! The man's just not Republican pres. material.

Elphaba 11-07-2005 08:09 PM

Ooops... I must be in Titled Nonsense.

This is a big country, tecoyah. A candidate will emerge who has integrity and who does not scare the shit out of me, the way McCain's "politics" do. I do not see him as a man of...or for the people....not the people who sorely need an advocate of their best interests the way non-corporatist, non-red state Americans do. I'm describing the majority.

Stage Right for Candidate McCain
Sen. John McCain is taking action to make it hard for conservatives to write him off in the 2008 presidential race. His office confirms that the <b>maverick moderate recently met with the Rev. Jerry Falwell,</b> a conservative icon who is influential with voters on the right. Also, as McCain prepares a campaign-style trip to South Carolina, critical in the 2008 GOP primaries, <b>a key ally is putting himself in the good graces of conservatives. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham is winning kudos from conservatives for backing Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, raising his stature in the state and maybe even making his 2008 endorsement the key to victory. And <b>should McCain win the state</b> that derailed his 2000 bid, <b>Graham would vault to the top of the veep list, say insiders.</b>
Lindsay Graham, senior senator from one of the poorest states in the union, sports a <a href="http://www.progressivepunch.org/members.jsp?member=SCII">"progressive" voting score</a> in the senate of a whopping 6.30. He regularly votes against the interests of the majority of his constituency, and they reward him by voting against themselves by sending him back to the senate.

Damn it !!! There will be a backlash from Bush's failed presidency and the "ethics" problems of Delay, Frist, Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, and whoever else implodes when the stench from Abramoff's "activities" are more publicized. That backlash is the only hope that the majority of us have to shift the consolidation of influence away from conservative christians and the politicians who have destroyed the balanced federal budget and slow growth of federal government, and the reputation of the U.S. as a responsible member of a former coalition of developed nations. "Bush lite" ain't gonna get us headed in a perceptively better direction.

Anybody who kisses Falwell's butt to advance his politcal career, IMO, does not deserve the praise and the spotlight that you've honored him with here.

A picture is worth a thousand words......

You'll call the photo post a "cheap shot", but it seems to illustrate the "love".

tecoyah 11-08-2005 05:47 AM

Wow.....it would seem we need someone other than a politician to run for president, if I follow your reasoning correctly. Truly if I followed my gut, completely when it comes to American politics, I simply would not vote in any election.....ever. But in this reality we live in, there are no rose colored glasses to place on my face. There are unfortunately, no candidates who meet the relatively high criteria I would hope for in my president....likely there never will be. One can hope for the best, even work to find such a person, but there comes a time when such wishing for nirvana is no longer productive. This of course is subjective to the individual, and forms the basis of opinion on an individual candidate.
There are many things about McCain I would change, but I am not in a position to do so. This leaves me in the usual position of a lesser of two evils descision. I know you feel strongly negative towards virtually anythin resembling an elephant Host....as is your right. But when one is blinded by dislike....part of the world becomes unavailable. I for one like to keep my options open.

Mojo_PeiPei 11-08-2005 09:55 AM

It seems weird that Mccain would have to embrace the hardcore right wing for his bid, I mean I guess in the party primary it makes sense. But let's be serious, and I'm assuming Mccain is pro-life, if given the nod for Republican canidate, who could go moderate and distance himself from the fundies, albeit not completely. I just can't see them voting anything but republican or not voting at all, lord knows if they did you baby killing gay loving America hating liberals would surely win the White House.
