What do u think of our President? Simple. How do u feel about the comments Kanye West made stating that Bush doesn't like black or colored people?

Charlatan 09-07-2005 07:24 AM

How long before the boycott of Kanye West starts? How long until Clear Channel bans his music from the airwaves?

I give it a day or so on the outside.

deezndc 09-07-2005 07:35 AM

When....

I didn't know anything about that (ban) but how do u feel about what he said.

I haven't heard them personally.
But I thought it was beyond the pale for some FOX commentators to say Kanye is ignorant and/or stupid for his statements.

ratbastid 09-07-2005 07:41 AM

I think it's inappropriate for a celebrity to use a charity event as a grandstand from which to broadcast political speech. Not that they can't have political opinions or even be vocal about them, but doing so at a charity event it takes away from the point of the thing, the charity. It makes everyone uncomfortable--look at Mike Myers, for God's sake. Worst of all, it makes potential donors uncomfortable. I mean, why did Kanye even agree to be on the thing? Was it to support the charity? So, why stab them in the back like that?

That said, it looks an awful lot like the bungled aftermath of Katrina was at least in part the result of racisim both on the institutional and the personal level. We were in there real quick working for the affluent white victims of 9/11, weren't we?

Never mind it was a totally different set of circumstances, with different local leaders.

Plus I don't recall the residents of NYC shooting at the rescuers. I’m sure its just us not liking them coloreds.

deezndc 09-07-2005 07:52 AM

I agree with rat on the low blow but I still want to know what u think. I'm trying to see if the fellow tfpers feel like we have a racist president. I personally think the nation is taking a step backwards as far as race relations go....

deezndc 09-07-2005 07:55 AM

See what I mean....u can't even have lucrative conversation without a ignorant comment.

I was being a bit sarcastic... you might recall the various bans and boycotts that occured when the Dixie Chicks and others came out against Bush in the early days of the Iraqi occupation.

I don't think there is any denying that there is institutional racism in North America. The problem with institutional racism is that it is ingrained to the point where you cannot single out an individual as racist.

I don't think it is fair to call Bush a racist. He is many things but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

A better way to look at it is that Bush is "classist". He give the appearance of assisting those with money and votes. I am not saying he doesn't care or even thing about the poor... I don't know what he thinks on this subject and that is kind of the problem.

For a leader who is very good at manipulating his image (or at least works with people who can do this for him) he is doing a piss poor job of looking like he is doing anything for these people (the poor of New Orleans), regardless of what he may or may not actually be doing.

His handlers really fucked this up. He should have been on Air Force One right away and he should have at least had the appearance of doing something (again regardless of what he actually did or what his actual responsibilities are in this situation).

Sorry rookie but I found rastas comment to be ignorant in itself.

As for celebrities grandstanding, who really cares? They have been doing so for a number of years and each ignorant comment they make publicly only helps lower their importance.

Plus asking 'What do you think of our president?' is a we bit vague, and you added no input yourself. If you want a good discussion, start by DISCUSSING the topic and giving us your opinions.

My oh my, is this uswo giving a lecture on how to hold a proper discussion? Well, will wonders never cease. You forgot the part about sticking almost exclusively to sardonic, tangentially relevant remarks. :icare:

I thought it was seriously irresponsible for Kanye to rip bush during the charity drive, if only because the purpose is to raise money and angering people who suppourt the president is not helping the people of lousiana and mississippi. Also celebrities have no idea what they are talking about whether its kanye west, or pierce brosnan or jane fonda or toby keith. They all need to shut the hell up when it comes to politics.
