I don't care much about the IDs... but the RFID tags that actually proffer information about the carrier is wrong. Someone said something to the effect of "people don't give a rats arse about you". That's funny... identity theft is an exponentially growing area of criminal intent. So, now they don't have to hack your computer or dig through your trash... they can just walk next to you down a crowded street or pull the info while they're next to you in the subway. How is this NOT a bad thing?

I said "Nobody gives a rat's arse about you. Therefore, they have no reason whatsoever to follow you around; they have better things to do." That statement was aimed at *the government", to illustrate the fact that they won't bother to follow you around using those RFID tags.

I agree that "identity thiefs" would be interested, but fail to see how an RFID tag increases the risks. If these people are close enough to read the tag, they're close enough to pick your pockets and steal your ID. Which is what they can do already.

I also assume that the (limited!) information on the tag will be protected against abuse by encryption. Even the UK government isn't stupid enough to create a system that allows everyone and their dog to check and record your personal data.

If they pick your pocket, you KNOW your ID has been stolen. If they scan it off your ass... you have no clue...

And ALL governments are stupid enough to do that. Oooo, encryption... Oooo... wtf good does most encryption do these days? I doubt they'll have strong (2048-bit) encryption due to costs.

So, what do you think will be stored on those RFID tags anyway? I doubt it'll contain too much information (perhaps a unique ID or something), so I still fail to see how this is going to be good for identity thiefs. Scanning an RFID tag is going to get you less info than something as simple as stealing mail.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I trust my government to respect my privace, and protect my personal data.

Well, you're government is not my government. I love the U.S. and I love being an American. Sadly, I don't trust my government too terribly much. But then again, our very foundation prevents that. The government doesn't trust itself (checks and balances) and rightfully so.

Also, who knows what they'll put on the RFIDs. Maybe not much, maybe too much. There's no way to tell until they're here, right?
