London: A British man wanted in the United States for what US authorities have called the largest hacking effort against American military networks has been freed on bail by Bow Street Magistrates Court.

The court heard allegations on Wednesday that Gary McKinnon, 39, illegally accessed 97 US Government computers between February 2001 and March 2002, causing $US700,000 ($916,000) worth of damage.

Police arrested the former computer engineer, known online as Solo, at his home in north London on Tuesday.

Lawyers for McKinnon, who was first arrested three years ago, said he would vigorously resist extradition to the US.

His solicitor, Karen Todner, confirmed a published report that McKinnon was motivated by a desire to expose the ease with which a civilian could breach government computer systems, and by a strong conviction that the US Government was concealing evidence of UFOs.

A lawyer acting for the US Government, Janet Boston, told the court McKinnon had installed unauthorised software on computers in the US army, navy and air force, NASA and the Department of Defence that allowed him to "completely control the computers".

"On one instance, the US Army's military district of Washington network became inoperable," Ms Boston said.

I have three thoughts on this.

1) He proved his point. It is easy for a civilian to breach US government computer systems.

2) He's a crazy. UFO's? I thought President Carter proved they didn't exist. :)

3) At least he wasn't a terrorist. Now you've only got to worry about little green men taking over the world, instead of "islamic fundamentalists". :D

Makes me wonder:

1) what they hell is our military spending money on if people can hack into our military systems so easily.

2) how many hackers haven't been caught?

3) UFOs are real, I saw Stanton Freidman when i was 9 with my dad and Dr. Friedman said they were real and the government was hiding all this info. good to know someone out there can hack into our top secret files and expose the truth. All Hail the Grays.

It does make you wonder, one guy causes all this damage, gee, I thought the pentagon was secure..thats what they keep telling us.....I feel safe

Sounds like we should be hiring this guy not prosecuting him.

No explanation at all of how this guy did $700K in damage. If this is "top secret info" then our people should realize that it will come out in any trial against him.

I'm sorry, but anyone who uses the phrase "the US Army's military district of Washington network" is either being purposefully vague or has no clue what she is talking about.

That's the usual nonesense they use in prosecution of hackers etc.

Time spent on finding him, the cost of "fixing" the network and/or removing the Trojans etc.

It's very subjective.
