LA elects its first Latino mayor in 133 years

Maybe a sign that the immigrant vote is starting to take real power in some places? What do you think?

Quote:
Antonio Villaraigosa romped past incumbent James K. Hahn to make history Tuesday, winning election as the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since the city's pioneer days. Riding a huge wave of voter discontent, the challenger avenged his 2001 loss to Hahn, who possessed an iconic family name but never connected strongly with voters during a rocky four-year term.

Villaraigosa's landslide represented a crowning symbol of Latinos' growing clout in California, after decades of population gains that failed to produce a commensurate rise in political power. L.A.'s last Latino mayor, Cristobal Aguilar, left office in 1872, when the now-sprawling metropolis was a frontier outpost of barely 6,000 people. The runoff contest also produced a striking parallel with the city's last breakthrough election in 1973, when Tom Bradley won a rematch against incumbent Sam Yorty to become the first black mayor of Los Angeles. That race also marked the last time a mayor was turned out of City Hall.

Shortly before midnight, a beaming Villaraigosa greeted chanting supporters to claim victory and restate his campaign's theme of unity.

"It doesn't matter whether you grew up on the Eastside or the Westside, whether you're from South Los Angeles or Sylmar," he said. "It doesn't matter whether you go to work in a fancy car or on a bus, or whether you worship in a cathedral or a synagogue or a mosque. We are all Angelenos, and we all have a difference to make."

Villaraigosa staged his victory party downtown in a grandiose setting befitting the historic occasion. Thousands of supporters swarmed the street outside Los Angeles Center Studios — the former Unocal headquarters — with downtown skyscrapers as a backdrop and lavender jacaranda trees glowing under lights shining from the rooftop.

"Let's declare our purpose here and now," Villaraigosa said, to roars from the crowd. "Our purpose is to bring this great city together. Our purpose is to draw fully and equally on the rich diversity of all our communities and neighborhoods."

A short time later, he said Hahn had called him and "conceded in a gracious manner."

For his part, the defeated incumbent thanked his campaign volunteers and supporters at a Hollywood nightclub and mounted a rousing defense of his tenure.

"This city is so much better off," he said, citing a drop in violent crime and a rise in new housing. "That stuff didn't just magically happen."

I hate him because he was president of MEChA. It's basically a racist organization that wants to hand the SW United States back over to Mexico. This group is very similar to the kkk or black panthers actually. They want everything for the hispanic race, and nothing for everyone else.

From the Mecha constitution

Interesting. Of course, our media would never pick up on this. If in fact it's true.

First of all, he wasn't president. He was a member when he was a college student along with just about every other Hispanic at the school.

The organization was founded in the 60s and contained some radical elements, but so did most organizations at the time. It's a stretch by even right-wing propaganda standards to compare this organization to the KKK.

The organization that exists today contains none of those elements and Villaraigosa has in fact renounced any such elements that may have existed.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Especially when it's a right-wing propaganda site.

That wouldn't be a first in the history of world cultures. Actually it happens everyday, it's just that most people don't notice or care to notice our days. Thankfully there are people in this world that keep us informed. But they are the racists.

I have lived in LA for over 40 years and nothing ever changes. Republicans, democrats, all the same shit. Lining their pockets and their friends with public works jobs, cushy positions, culling lobbyists and money. It's all about money. Villaraigosa has pledged more funs for the LAPD but who knows. Politicians only care about themselves and their friends. Period.

When Tom Bradley was mayor, the vast majority of money went down the well into south central LA. Riordan and Hahn enriched the pockets of their friends. I suppose now it's time for certain Latino businessmen and friends to get rich.

Could you tell us where and when you went to school? Antonio Villaraigosa, Cruz Bustamante, Raul Grijalva, and other prominent Latino politicians say to this day, that they are proud to have been Mechistas.

In spite of articles like this:

I kinda mis-spoke there. He was president of his chapter at the school that he went too, not the president of the entire organization.

However, I do know that these type of organizations are promoting a Mexican takeover of SW United States. We have billboards that say LA, MEXICO in the United States. What in the world is going on here.

Old Glory covers 'Mexico' Billboard

Then we have a Mexican flag placed ABOVE the American flag in an Oregon Employment office.

PLACING MEXICAN FLAG ABOVE "OLD GLORY"

U.S. pays for care of illegal aliens
Of course we all know Dubya's stance on illegal immigration. He wants to pay hospitals to provide care for illegals. These people are feeding off every valid American citizen. I'm sure you know about all the illegals in the schools and their abuse of social services. These Hispanic hate groups are REAL just like other racial hate groups of the past. They really want to hand over the United States to Mexico, and the facts prove this. How can we continue to provide wellfare for people who do not pay their way? It's almost like illegals are first class citizens compared to people who are here legally. This is why we should not support people like this Villaraigosa guy. These MECHIstas are supporting this insanity.

well, if anybody knows anything about los angeles, hispanics now consitute over 55% of the entire population of LA. Seeing the mexican flag above the US flag really burns my ass.

When my parents came to this country in the early 50's from europe, they demanded of themselves that they become Americans. That meant learning English as fast as possible, becoming members of society.

LA has become such a hodgepoge of so many different cultures it is almost impossible to know where you are at some times.

Glendale has the largest armenian population outside of armenmia, Iranians are here in an ernourmous amount, More Koreans here than outside of korea, More than a million filipinos, Russians by the million,

and of course mexicans, san salvadorans, guatelmala, all central america, even a ton of peruvians.

and few if any of them make an effort to become part of mainstream america.

Last, dont forget asians. more vietnamese here than outside of vietnam, cambodians, etc.

Bottom line i want out of LA. period.

If I might offer a small parcel--I heard on the news over ten years ago that there were more Armenians in LA than in Armenia.

I have no problem with them being here, but it bothers me that we are supposed to change our signs and provide interpreters for THEM. (Immigrants, not just Armenians.)

I also take our Canadian members' praise of their health care system with a grain of salt, since they aren't the ones providing basic care (in emergency rooms) for these immigrants.

It's also hard to believe what is said by some--that illegals pay taxes. I just don't see it happening to any worthwhile extent.

I agree with you 100%. I know this sounds hokey, but i have a bunch of armenian friends. I have had my law office in Glendale for 18 years. The armenians, for the most part, are good people. Street signs are not in Armenian here. There's a bunch of terrific armenian restaurants here i can point to towards though.

What is going on here is that you either "mis-spoke" again or are intentionally posting divisive material.

Oregon is not the "SW." The region is the Pacific Northwest.
The flag is not being flown by the officials, but rather by an employee abover his (or her) desk in a cubicle.

Of course, one has to read through a bunch of BS about a man who got so upset from hearing about this from a friend that he periodically went into the building solely to check up on the status of the flag. Then near the end, the author finally explains to the reader that this really isn't a flag flying over the US flag, but a worker's personal possession in a cubicle.

hmmm.
I guess you can either whine, leave, create some incentive for Western Europeans to immigrate to the West coast, or have more children.

There's a reason people flow from Mexico into the US, and it isn't because the excellent economic opportunities in Mexico are driving them north. Like Carlos Mencia says - give California to Mexico and it will soon look like Mexico.

The SW America thing is kind of irrelevant. I live in Indiana which most people might not think of as a place of illegals, but there are entire communities in cities that are known for illegals aliens. Also from an article from the bottom of the other article I posted:
Quote:
Oregon, she added, is in a small minority of states that don’t require a Social Security card to get a driver’s license. California, Arizona and many other states have set up that hoop, Copeland noted, thus producing a ripple effect of Mexican immigrants to Oregon. Mexican residents gain ID benefits
It has nothing to do with European races, or Mexicans, or any race for that matter. It's about Illegal aliens coming to our country, using our roads, driving our wages down, having their children in our hospitals, using our social programs, all while paying little or no taxes. In my state if an illegal knows the difference between the front door and emergency room, they can get FREE healthcare through Medicare. I'm glad they check my Insurance first before giving me any benefits though. Not to mention all the fine diseases that we once conqured that are coming back like TB and whopping cough. We used to at least screen immigrants to make sure they were'nt crimminals or carrying contagious diseases. Would you want your child sitting next to an illegal with TB?

Fine come to our country and take advantage of our generosity, but don't desicrate our flag and call this great nation Mexico. I'm really tired of being insulted by these people, especially the ones who think they are better than us. Villaraigosa is the perfect guy to continue this insanity. I guess for now I'm just thankful I do not live in the third world nation of LA, Mexico.

PS...I also know LEGAL Mexicans who are very upset about this invasion. They hate the stereotypes they get as it refelcts on them because of race.

That's insulting to me. WE are the American Citizens. We have the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the things that make this country great. Not Mexico.
