Motor nerves successfully grown from stem cells

Getting harder and harder for right-wing extremists to argue against stem cell research when major breakthroughs like this are coming fast and furious.

Quote:

Human spinal motor nerves have been grown in a laboratory for the first time in a breakthrough which scientists believe will have far-reaching implications for the treatment of devastating injuries and diseases. Motor nerves branch out from the spinal cord and brain to transmit messages which dictate almost every movement in the body.

The success announced by US scientists could help the victims of spinal cord injuries or lead to new treatments for crippling disorders such as motor neurone disease. Researchers also hope the results will be used to treat incurable conditions such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes. They also predict that it could have potential in repairing injury to hearts and nerves. In the shorter term, it will allow scientists to create motor neurone modelling systems for screening new drugs.

I disagree, for those of us think that life starts at conception, the extraction of stem cells from the baby kills it. And I don't agree with killing babies for research. There are other options including adult stem cell research, which is not as good as stem cells from babies (but more research could make this a better option), and umbilical cord stem cell extraction. In any case, I'm no "right-wing extremist" but I will argue against the research that in my opinion kills babies.

There are indeed other options, and I agree they should be the focus.....not because I think a Zygote is a human bieng, but because it seems possible to accomplish the end result without pissing off the religious conservatives. There is no reason to make this a political quagmire, if the research into Adult stem cells is fully funded.

This is great news, hopefully something good comes from these cells. I just wish there was a better way to do this type of research.

Too bad Lord Bush will never advocate it.

Charlatan 01-31-2005 09:17 AM

If the US government wants to halt this sort of research, fine. There are other places to do this research than the US...

Places like California that voted in funding for Embryonic Stem Cell Research.
Cali isn't afraid to spend money on research and technology that the rest of the nation is either too backwards/superstitious or singlemindedly against supporting.
And that's why it will continue to be the beating heart of this nations economy. Hopefully they alone can keep up with all of Europe.

does anyone else suspect that CShine might be a news-scouring bot programmed by George Soros?
