Political speeches
So my college is having an oratorical contest with, get this, *CASH* prizes. I am thinking about it, but I don't really know any decent speeches that aren't super well-known.
Here's the criteria: Has to be 1964 or BEFORE Has to be an American Has to be political And has to be about 6-8 minutes in length Any help would be appreciated :-D

LInk to the top 100 speeches. Lots more in there,if you're looking for something more obscure.

JohnnyRoyale has done it again.
His response has effectively addressed this question so well that there's no point in any others. Great link. Mr Mephisto PS - Personally I would have liked to link some of Churchill's speeches. You know, you could be smart and use his address to the US Congress and Senate. He was given honourary US citizenship after all. How many people will be crafty enough to figure that one out! You should get extra credit for that one!!! |

He was given honourary US citizenship by an Act of Congress on April 9, 1963.
If you're interested, check out http://www.winstonchurchill.org/i4a/...cfm?pageid=430 If alive, he would have the same rights as any of you (American members). Mr Mephisto |

I would love to hear that you sold your prof on using Churchill. He was the greatest speaker of the century, in my opinion.
From Mephisto's link: "In the dark days and darker nights when Britain stood alone -- and most men save Englishmen despaired of England's life -- he mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." -- Kennedy Amen. Not to piss off gung-ho Americans, but England really taught us a lesson about how to sack up in the beginning of WWII. They showed what courage was.

Without Churchill, Germany would have possibly, maybe even probably, won the war in the West.
Europe would not be either a Nazi dominated fascist super-state, or the Soviet Union would have defeated Germany eventually and created a massive communist Europe. Either way, the US would not have been able to invade France and the world as we know it would be unrecognizable. Pretty amazing for one man, who almost singlehandedly, warned the British of the impending danger of Nazi Germany, convinced the public that rearmanent was necessary and motivated the British to hold out during "their darkest hour." Great guy and a phenomenal speaker. Mr Mephisto |

Well, first of all, I'd like to thank Mr. Mephisto for his compliment, unless it's some backhanded compliment thing, in which case, I withdraw my thanks
Having said that, I'd vote for either George Marshalls address explaining the Markshall Plan, Kennedy's address to the public about the Cuban Missle crisis, Kennedy's inagural address in 64, or, if there's time, the checkers speech by Nixon. The Marshall plan speech is pretty obscure, so you shouldn't have to worry about anyone else doing it. Unfortunatly, it lacks the general passon of other speeches, so you may loose points on that. The Missle crisis speech might have other takers, but it's a good one about the US defining the Soviet union not just as the Russians, but acknowledging their attempts to influence the world, which later led to the "Domino Theory" that got the US into Korea and Vietnam. Finally, the Checkers speech is probably too long (it runs about 30 minutes total, but you might ask if you can do just the end), but it's one of the MOST blatantly self-serving political manuvers in the history of modern US politics, which IMHO, makes it worth a look.
